  • Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 ran a series of "Employee Specials" for Norfolk Southern out of Altoona, PA twice per day over the weekend of May 18-19, 2013. Big Jim Video Productions was there to catch the action of this small slice of railraoding history. Each run would travel westbound out of Altoona, up over the famed Horseshoe Curve, and through the Gallitzin tunnel - before reversing back down the mountain to Altoona. Leading the way back down was NS "Heritage Unit" #8102 in the Pennsylvania Railroad paint scheme. It was an amazing weekend, seeing mainline steam for the first time, as the sights and sounds of the "Berkshire" in action won't soon be forgotten. Enjoy the video!

The stack talk from her start up at 10:00 sent chills down my spine. These things are just incredible machines, living and breathing.

My stepfather put in 30 years at Conway, retiring two years ago at the water treatment plant. Him and my mother were on this train. Great video.

The steam engine took that hill with ease as with the diesel engines A been seein on other videos where they have a hard time going up the hill struggling r stalling on the hill going up where the nickel plate steam engine took that hill like it was nothing

Good work on the clips for that weekend especially the startup out of Altoona! Hope to see more on the big weekend.

But all that said, from what I understand, the following is the general situation:
Grant stipulations now state that all further restoration work MUST be done in Altoona. This is why she's been returned from Scranton in pieces.
Thus, Quarter Roundhouse must be complete. The outer building is finished, but the interior isn't done (the bay right of center is supposed to be maintenance and overhaul equipment for 1361).

Not a lot. I keep picking up tidbits here and there, but not a lot. I wanna see her as much as any rail fan--she'd become one of two PRR steam locomotives alongside William's Grove's B4a 0-6-0 #643 switcher (currently the only), and the only one capable of traveling long distances (643 is on a closed off 1 mile track)--she's a long ways off. Her tender shell is behind the museum property, her old smokebox is laying in the grass, and her boiler--last I heard--is in Orbisonia in the EBT shops.

There is no good place to turn it in Altoona. When they turned it to dead head to Harrisburg, they towed it back up the Curve to Gallitzin.

This is a great video and I really enjoyed it. I made an eight hour trip to be there on Memorial Day weekend and loved every minute of it.
