Did you discover dBase first, then Clipper? Remember how excited you got when you found out you could create your VERY OWN compiled database program? BIG FUN!!!!!!! LOL :)
DBase III+ System requirements: IBM PC; 256K RAM; DOS 2.0 or later; 1 disk drive (360K). Those were the days when simplicity was there. DBase III+ users shifted to using FoxPro then. Today a smartwatch is more loaded in terms of Processing,RAM and OS prowess.
Can any one believe that an Application created in dBASE III plus is being run even as on 06 - 04 - 2019. Yes, it is such an astonishing environment having the frontend, backend, DML, DCL and reporting via coding tied at one place. The reports are DTP compatible and deployable on WEB. Ashton Tate isn't a person, but is the name of the company that developed dBASE. You can see the history of how the company was named so at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashton-Tate#Early_history:_dBASE_II_.281981.E2.80.931983.29
Thanks. I look forward to reading that. Dbase was my first DBMS and I used to love using it. The guys who developed it were really great. How i wish they would do something similar for the Android World !
The problem with this is the database is visible and can be opened separately...i switched to Clipper after dbase 3+. With clipper, db is hidden after compiling..but yes i did loved dbase.
When I was in High School computer class in about 1987/88 we had to learn a data entry program I wonder if it was this one. All I remember was I got stuck on "Create Mask" function (we were tasked with creating a simple data entry on-screen form). Was that perhaps this program or another?
Dbase was simple, yet very flexible and powerful. You could build quick, men driven databases for LAY PERSONS and thus increase organization productivity. Most of the database needs of the office could be met by this wonderful software. When i upgraded computers i always ensured that the MS-DOS dot-prompt was available, so that i could use Dbase. In today's Android world i am not able to find a similar DBMS similar to Dbase, which would enable me to make database apps for me / others which would be menu driven and also easy to use. Can anyone please suggest a few options ?
