    One of my favourite comics artists. I learned so much looking at his books and still discover something new each time I read them.

    I love Christophe Blain's art!
    Another French artist I really enjoy is Yomgui Dumont. He draws with this same cartoony vibe, and has amazing character designs.

    I wonder if this kind of style is a sort of appreciation for older comics, when they were very much constrained in printing by color and that kind of stuff. I really can't put it into words why this stuff is good, it seems like it's focused, somehow. definitely a good choice.

    Christophe Blain is incredible. Gus and his Gang was my first Blain comic and book one is one of my all-time favorite comics (the characters are memorable and I enjoyed their situations). I enjoy The Speed Abater, too. Have you heard of Alex Baladi? I quite enjoy his comics, though there's only one published in English - Frankenstein Now and Forever. I'm off to find your comics. Thanks, Benjamin.

    For info "The speed abater" is (freely) inspired by Blain's year in the marine for his military service.

      Oh very cool! Thanks for letting me know that! I really don't know anything about his personal life. That's awesome to see it come out of a personal experience.

      @@benjamin_schipper He has also published "Carnets d'un matelot", a compilation of the observational drawings he drew during his service year in the marine but I haven't read it.

    Blain's story on Dungeon is my favourite. I love him and all the artists of L'Association. Professor Bell vol. 2 by Joann Sfar is a brilliant reading. Thanks for sharing!

    I have his Gus book. It was much better than I expected. It went in directions I wasn’t expecting.
    Have you read Kairos by Ulysse Malassagne? It has great examples of how to express motion.

    dungeon is a very deep and enormous french comic book universe, you should look at it further, i mean it in a way that not only the books made by blain are good but also the overwhole series is absolutely insane, its very very good

      I have few that aren't drawn by Blain and you're right, they are still really fun, but I don't know if I enjoy them as much. Like, the whole thing(art and story) has to work for me before I'll read it. The Mignolaverse for example, is huge, but I really only read the stuff that Mike draws himself. Perhaps I shouldn't but for some reason the stories are never interesting enough for me to put up with lower quality cartooning. But thank you for recommending! Perhaps I'll get a chance to read them all in the future!

    • @durianlegrand
      @durianlegrand Рік тому

      @@benjamin_schipper for the mignolaverse i agree because it is too much linked for me to a drawing style that is very specific so i cant very much read something else in this versé, but i think in the World of dungeon it is super fun to discover french underground artist coming un the light with this ! Especially for french people like me, seeing someone you knew before getting validation by sfar and Trondheim (the fathers of dungeon), is a very good thing to live :)

      @@durianlegrand Ok yeah! Right on, that makes total sense. I love hearing that that is how it works. I never would have known. Hey, in your opinion what's the best way for an American cartoonist to be featured in the French comic scene? Are there many American comics that are translated into French and published by French publishers?

      @@benjamin_schipper mainly the big names of comics like dc or marvel, but we have a little but of crumb, mignola, and a whole brunch of graphic novel, but i think it would be nice to expand for some independant comic artist to go inside the french edition, i dont know how because as a french art student, and "auteur de bd" (comic artist if you want), im trying to figuring out myself
