In this much requested video we take the 1891 Argentine Mauser chambered in 7.65×53mm Mauser out to the tower for some 600 yard work. These rifles have proven to shoot exceptionally well and hopefully we will be able to do it justice at extended range. Stay tuned, much more on the way.

We are still working on getting the Martini Henry to shoot well out to 600. A pipe dream possibly, but a fun journey none the less. Definitely volley fire distance.

Eric, bought an 1891 at a Gun Show 5 years ago, no Import Stamps, 1900 year of manufacture. $250! Numbers matching excellent bore condition have not shot it, disassembled, cleaned and lubricated it. Beautiful rifle.

I finally got my hands on one of these and I have to say, I think it might be in even better shape than the one you guys have. Took it to the range and out shot my K-31. Might just be my favorite Milsurp at the moment. Thank you guys, for turning me on to this rifle.

I really appreciate you guys (chad-eric) sharing your love and knowledge of the 1891. I inherited a mauser 1891 years ago and not knowing anything about it I locked it up in my safe and there it sat. After I mentioned it one afternoon at a BBQ i was suddenly hounded to sell it. I turned down the $400 cash offer and found you guys on UA-cam. Thank you very much for the education I now have a new found respect for the rifle. I can't wait to go " jammin " with the Argentine Mauser 1891.

I've owned and shot several 1891 and 1909 Argentine Mausers over the past 45 years. They all proved to be highly accurate in the "as issued" configuration. At least two Gun Writers claimed "This is the most accurate (Hunting) rifle I own!" I have a Sporterized '91 that has put 4 shots in a ragged hole at 100 yards on several occasions, but I always get one "Flier" that opens the group up to around 1" at 100 yards. This rifle has a 4X scope mounted, therefore, I can't use it for "Military Rifle Competition". I've always shot handloads (Neck Sized Only) with the Hornady .312 Diameter 174 grain RN. I still have some of the Speer 175 grain .313 Diameter RN bullets, that were discontinued many years ago, and I use these for hunting. There is no difference in the groups fired with the .312's verses the.313's.and I can usually keep five rounds in a 1" to 1.25" group at 100 yards, off a bench rest if I do my part, even though the bore on this rifle has seen better days! This may not be "Accurate" by todays standards but it is sufficiently accurate for hunting in Minnesota.Regards,Gungineer

Came across an 1891 Argentine Mauser at my local gun shop the other day, but didn't know anything about them. Figured I would search UA-cam and see if you had a video on them, and sure enough, there it was. So, went back and picked it up for a whopping $150 out the door. The stock has been cut down, but the barrel is still 28". Took it straight out to put a few rounds through it today, and she shoots true and strong. Wouldn't have made the purchase if I hadn't seen your video! Keep 'em coming!

William Clark Your rifle is worth upwards of 500 bucks now. Maybe more. Good return on your investment. I own the same rifle but didn’t get the great deal you got. I bought mine about 4 years ago.

Aside from the anticipation of the shot i really love hearing the downrange sounds of the bullets flying by. These videos are awesome.
Could you imagine how many modern rifles cant touch this degree of consistent accuracy.
Things to notice that left me in awe:
- The force with which those projectiles hit at 600 yards. 29" bbl, right? Like the '98 and '09? +Prvi Partizan. I hear Norma began to make 7,65 Arg again. Well to be honest, even got a couple boxes recently haha!
- The fact that despite aiming that far, the muzzle was always pointing down (take the parallel handrail on the shooter's left as reference).
- The fact that they hit at all using irons!! And hit many times with constantly changing wind angles!
I'm definitely slapping a LER scope on my 1909, on one of those rails that require no permanent modification.

I used an 1891 for many years as my chuck gun. Of course I did replace the front sight with a bead and rounded the rear notch.
Had one of these bout 30 yrs ago & really liked shooting it....from a bench.(a long, heavy rifle for sure)Awesome job Eric, best to you fellas, MIKE.

Jim Creamer Great rifle. My dad bought one about 1960 for $12.50 I remember him going through the whole gun and cleaning and reworking it. He was so proud of it. All serial numbers matched. It just was such a nice old rifle that looked brand new when he was done.
I still have it and will never get rid of it. Haven't shot it in 40 years. Maybe it's time to change that.

Your videos have inspired me to get my M1891, as well as some of my other old milsurp bolt action rifles out to the range and try my hand at some long range shooting. I'll combine it with my passion for working up the most accurate handload for every rifle and see what I can do at extended ranges.

The 1891 is a pure work of art especially for its time. The only draw back it's oversized anemic cartridge, but it was sure a tack driver.

My one and only milsurp so far is an 1891 Argentine Loew and Loew manufacture. I picked up last winter at a gun show for $180. Unfortunately, it’s been sporterized in that the hand guard has been cut short. Replacements are near unobtainium. I love her, but I might replace her if another L&L 1891 comes along with an unmolested stock.

I have one of these that has a custom left handed stock, custom barrel, and a modified action. Wish ammo was easier to get cause it's one heck of a sporter.
This was my first gun. I got it for Christmas when I was 17. Never shot it at this range. Not bad for a 120 something year old gun.😎
My ole man has a similar variant, but its a carbine...it was grandpa's, unfortunately it's, I'm not sure if sporterized is the right term, missing a part of the stock at the front of the barrel. I've wanted to get it refurbished and cleaned up. I haven't shot it since I was a kid. Really cool video, brought back memories.

Eric my 1891 Argie is a carbon copy of yours. It shoots similarly as well, using PRVI 174grn FMJ I had to set sights to 400 to hit dead on at 535 yards. I had a discussion at gunboards about this issue (shooting high at all ranges) and the PRVI is definitely loaded hotter than the milspec ammo, which ranged from 154 grains to 182 grains. Nobody could seem to give me a definite answer on that one. The later being loaded to around 2500fps. The PRVI Chronos over 2700fps. Stout...

Iron sights at 600 yards , you are doing great , most people need a scope for that yardage
Thing to remember about these old military bolt guns is they're generally 3-4 MOA on a good day. So your group at that distance is going to be about the size of that plate, sans wind.
people that dont shoot just cant realize how much skill that requires. Wind can move the bullet 2 feet at 600 easy or more. the trigger can cause a 3 to 4 foot jerk. Iron sites who knows.
I used a 91 Argentine in 7.65 on a big bull caribou at about 378 yards. I loved that rifle.

Hey enjoy watching the long range shots may be a good idea to tie a piece of surveyors ribbon at your gong to help with wind direction.

Great video. I have a 98k that shoots great...I can only imagine how much more accurately the longer barreled models shoot at much longer ranges with modern ammo.

Yes they really should, I have a original 1893 in 7mm. I had a 1916 in 762 but sold it due to safety concerns. The gun was near perfect but I just didn’t want to risk.
Did you believe all the B.S. about it being made for the CETME round? Do a quick google search and you'll find a original military manual for the rifles saying it was made specifically for 7.62 NATO, which is (despite incorrect popular opinion) basically the same pressure as .308. CUP vs PSI is the big mistake people make. And if you look deeply into the subject, you'll find that people have tested old 7mm surplus ammo and found it to be just as hot as a lot of 7.62 NATO. So, I find the fear unwarranted as long as you check the headspace often and don't push it. I shoot mild reloads in mine just like all my milsurps, but they are a lot stronger than people make them out to be.
I did not believe the “cetme” rumors, I was still unsure about a steady diet of modern 762 through a 100+ year old gun with only 2 locking lugs. I already own the same gun in 7mm and decided to just stick with it.
By the time the 1916s came around, the CIP had been established and all rifles made in Europe had to pass, I believe it was, a 125% over max pressure test. Mild and medium 308/7.62 is fine, though I prefer the 7mm myself.
Long range shooting with ironsighted vintage rifles...nobody does that. Good video, really shows the challenges of doing it.

A truly unremarkable rifle if not for the fact it is a beautiful , functioning and deadly weapon that is 126 years old. I wonder how today's guns will run in 2117.
You cannot use the model number as the manufacture date. It is most likely not 126 years old unless it was in real early production runs.
let me dream! yeah not likely 126 years old but definitely not unusual for 70-100 years old rifles being in good condition. It very much depends where and how its been stored.

I have an 1892 Turkish mauser. it was the first and only surplus gun i have ever bought. it was coated in cosmoline, after putting 100,200 rounds down range the stock cracked. did my stock crack because of the cosmoline in the stock?. the stock looked in good condition before taking it to the range. I did clean the gun before putting rounds through it.
Let's give it up for the bird! That is the most hardcore bird I've ever seen, was sitting there taking fire for almost 5 minutes!!!

I've got one of the Calvary carbines but it's so shot-out there's basically no rifling left. I've tried every type of jacketed bullet and cast bullet design out there, even a fat .314 NOE design and can't get it to shoot. Only thing left to try is paper patching. Looks like there's enough rifling left to get it to shoot SOME kind of group, but we will see....
It's an old MILSURP. If it shoots to 3 moa, that's an 18" group at 600 yards. Still a good video showing gamers how it works in reality mode.

I got one of them. I put an old Weaver T-10 scope on it (just to couple two grannys together). I love it. Shot several hogs with it.

Hey Eric. I've watch ur "how far a shotgun can kill" video numerous of times. Could you please revisit the how far a shotgun can be affective video, but only using a verity of slugs, barrels and sights? Like you said you would. Just proof to a bunch of my friends that a slug can reach out. And with the proper set up, can be accurate and affective. And having a professional do it would be proof. Thanks Eric.
I know you got frustrated but, my Lord, iron sites at 600 yards? You're both a very good shot! If the site had a smaller front iron and a finer detailed rear site bars you'd have narrowed it down faster.

That handguard looks like a 1890 outtoman not a 1891 Argentine, if the recivers not scrubbed then its super easy to tell the difference

Try it with a M4 iron sights you would get the same results good video I have this rifle for deer it's a perfect round 50 to 180 yards dead on drops deer and does a lot of damage so shot placement is important don't want to destroy the meat cause that round does a lot of damage great video I appreciate it keep them coming God and Country

Have about setting targets at 100m, 300m and 600m? It makes a lot of sense if your sights are regulated in meters.

Could you guys possibly try the target camera being through the spotter scope? I know your shorter range targets kind of show the trace of the round, but something were we can follow the shots all the way and see how the trajectory looks would be kinda neat. Seems like the shot is left of the shooter which makes the shots look like they hit elsewhere from your callout.
I shot some of this brand of ammunition (different caliber) through my M39 and the point of impact was a foot and a half to two feet high at 100 yards. Some people claim the M39's were zeroed at 400 yards but I have not been able to confirm that anywhere.

UA-cam commenters. Like I said I have been unable to confirm that. I have searched the net as much as possible and found nothing to support or deny it. I kind of have a hard time believing it. But I also find it quite shocking that the ammunition can vary enough for a gun the throw off the point of impact that far from the point of aim.
The 1891 are considered by the ARG Armed Forces and civilian shooters shooters slightly more precise tnan the Argentine Model 1908. There are differenmt theories, the most common one is that the action lacks the thumbhole allowing you to push down the ammo form the clip, so the vibrations are different, the other consistent theory is that Loewe Arsenal did a better job with the elaboration of the barrels.
