That evaporust is great stuff! I even use it in the ultrasonic cleaner. Keeping it at 70 degrees plus makes it work quick. Great videos. Remember cutting counter bores in old small cam big cam cummins back in the day....i was very lucky to work with/ for guys that had the equipment to cut the counterbores. They actually did them inframe. Pushed a brake diaphragm rubber in bore and cut them. Than vacuum out. Cummins shop didn't even have the tooling.
sir, after thinking a lot about this episode, I'm wondering... if this mechanic decided that the crankcase bearing was out of tolerance after all, is there not something that could be done to increase the metal there and bring it back into specs? I see an Aussie machine shop channel where he adds metal to surfaces them machines them back to spec. That would work here, too, right?
Every time I hear about Evaporust I think of Rust-ease from the movie Cars. Always good to help out the guy rebuilding your engine. Cleaning parts is a nasty job but it gives time to the mechanic to work on the crucial stuff.
To assemble an engine correctly takes a strong balance of experience, tools, patience, commitment, CLEAN work place and knowledge. You can cut corners and the mechanic will be long gone before the customer experiences a failure. You are blessed to have a craftsman like Joe building your engine...not many of them out there these days!!!

I worked in the Electrical Power Industry for 40 years. Our machinists used the same epoxy any time they needed a high strength surface they could machine back into specs!
Checking the ph level of antifreeze with test strips at each oil change would have prevented the seal ring cavitation in the cylinders. As Joe will tell you, a lil nal cool goes a long way … Interested in the product you are using to fill the seal ring surfaces in the cylinders. It may be expensive, but much cheaper than a new block ( if you could even find one )…… Thanks for sharing , interesting video.
The plastigage was not used correctly... In the middle of the bearring is a oilgroove where the oil can pas through, so the plastigage has to lay on the shaft in line with the shaft so the bearring can squish the outer parts and then you measure them.....
Agree on the emissions.. they’re great for a couple hundred thousand and then it all starts firing off problems at you…. I’m eye balls deep Into this truck now 🙈 im gonna at least break the engine and tranny in before I’d sell, but it’d have to be around that 100k mark by the time we re all through.
@@realwildwildwest I agree these emissions trucks are killing me over 50% of my maintenance spend is emissions related, that is about what I was thinking on price with all that work done and honestly I’d rather you run it to work any bugs out just keep me in mind I’d appreciate it 9eight9 three0five nineteen hundred. Another fun vid man. I'm looking for a good home for an old, rare, interesting Cabover. A 1972 International Unistar. They were kinda AWD for towing triples in the PNW mountains when Oregon first opened up to a three trailer semi. There was even a purpose built converter dolly that could be plugged in the ass of the frame to make it a 3 axle truck. Would be a fun project for someone that nees to bomb around in inclement weather/adverse conditions.
You need to convert one of your trucks into a diesel hybrid electric truck using technology from Edison Motors. I just really enjoy watching you guys rebuild these old trucks. It makes me wish I was 50 years younger, had made a different career choice, and traded my desk for a steering wheel.

I think you would like the UA-cam channel Vice Grip Garage. It is a family-friendly car repair channel where a lot of the times he’ll buy a car site unseen. Travel to it and get it running and drive it home.
Yessir, That’s why we pulled this thing all the way out and stripped it to the bone. They started out good, then lost their reputation in the mid teens it seemed like.. 2013 and on or so. Seems like that’s when gliders really went wild due to the early DEF trucks. They just started cranking them out and cutting corners.. 🙃

@@akbarshoedafter reading up on it a bit more, we decided we would be ok for another million miles. However IF they were all out of spec, YES, you can get oversized bearings to put in there and solve the problem.
Your better to check the bearings with a dial bore gauge and check the crank with a outside micrometer. I’ve seen bearings that were marked wrong or made wrong. That could be why the oil clearance is too much. I’d never trust Plastagauge. Just my two cents.

Inferior antifreeze? Wonder if somebody used well water in it? I only use ELC premixed antifreeze in my truck recommended and sold by my mechanics shop.
I believe That would be the solution until the crank itself wore beyond what a thicker bearing could overcome. (Which would likely take millions more miles?)
Shouldn’t the liners be torqued down to simulate the head being on before measuring liner protrusion ? Seems that .002 is at the minimum spec for Detroit
@@realwildwildwest look up tool J-35597-A or just Google Detroit Series 60 liner install tool ive also read a particular shop in Pennsylvania recommended setting the liner protrusion at .004
@@realwildwildwest not sure my reply went through but if you look up tool J-35597-A or Google Detroit Series 60 liner installation tool you will see the tool I am talking about, it also has spots to check liner protrusion with a liner height gauge.
