    A little TLC goes a long way, Del. Those pipes look suitable for a Church organ now. And Penny got us so close to the wrenching that I had to go wash up after watching.😁 I agree with the oil filter torque except when working on big diesels that spend their days bouncing around the beautiful roads in N.Y. City. If you didn't grunt a time or two while tightening them they would vibrate loose in a block. I had a young apprentice who learned that lesson the hard way. Thanks Del and Penny. Love everything about your videos. ❤👍👍

      Hi Rick, you are so right there, having trained as a diesel fitter in the 1980's on the buses that run round London, they do indeed like to make a bid for freedom, unless you swing on them a little! But then everything on those engines is heavy duty... glad you like the bike and always love to hear from you, thank you for your kind support, D&Px

    I've seen a few of your videos and have really enjoyed them, this one is no different. I know it was just you adjusting the bike to your spec, but I would love a bit more of an explanation over what you're doing, using and why. I admire the knowledge you have across a wide range of motorcycles, and would love to learn more from it. Would you consider making some guides aimed at younger, not mechanically savvy, bikers? Maybe a beginner bike series with something like a bandit or sv650? I'm 21, bike mad been riding for over a decade, got my first big bike (Suzuki 650 bandit), and love working with my hands but at my current state I don't know what to do with them!

    Absolutely a good tip. A Gorilla fitted one of mine from the factory.
    When I went to remove the oil filter for the first time on my T595 it defeated everything I threw at it!
    Ended up having to use the old Butcher’s method to get it off.
    So now I have 3 different filter sockets to make life easier.

      Ive never understood that, it's laid out in so many manuals to just tighten to half a turn from touch, or ive seen some recommend 12Nm..and that's what we use for M6 screws... so you never need to swing on them to do them up...!!!!

    Good tip about the oil filter Del, you do the same as my Dad showed me when I was a youngster. Every bike I have had caused problems getting the oil filter off to the point where I have 3 types of filter wrench, depending on what I can fit on the bike. 👍

  • @eMotion_Video_UK

    I have to disagree with the hand tight only oil filter, but only for the purpose of sharing my experience. I changed the oil on my Blackbird, on this particular occasion I decided to go with the hand tight only method. Up until this point I had done hand tight with just a little nip of the spanner. This is because I knew it should only be hand tight, but could never bring myself to accept that. I then rode it down the motorway to work, came back to it after my night shift to find a substantial amount of oil under the bike. So I tried to tighten the filter through the fairing, but it was solid. It was also solid when I tried to loosen it too. So it wasn’t leaking because I hadn’t tightened it enough. Of course I didn’t have those sort of tools to hand so I had to get my mrs to bring them to me in the car so I could remove the fairing and tighten it to get home. I’m just glad I spotted the oil before riding off down the motorway in morning rush hour traffic.
    I will never hand tighten again and I’ve always used genuine Honda filters.

    Hey Del, when changing the engine oil, after a bike has stood still for 2-3 years - never started up the whole time -, would it be wise to drain the old oil with a cold engine? As I don't know if it's bad to throw the old oil through the whole block first not knowing the state it is in. Also are ngk iridium plugs a good idea when replacing the older version of the same plug out? Love your videos by the way!!!!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Рік тому +2

      Yes, that's exactly what i would do after so long.. no need spreading all that round the engine.. drain it out, refill with fresh oil (and a filter) before you restart it.. Id also spin it over with the plugs out for a few turns first to wet the top end before you fire it up!

      No problem at all with that mate, ive left bikes for 18 months before and it's till ok..just warm it up for five minutes, it doesn't need to be working temperature, just warm so the sediments are mobilised and captured so they come out with the oil.. Have fun with it and good luck.. Del.

    I was half expecting you to say you had a gas/air leak in the downpipes to collector box, when you took the belly pan off!!!!
    Phew!
    Tilly the XJ900s sounds soooo sweet now, that theres no leaks anywhere in the exhaust system.
    I was out all day bank holiday monday. Riding here and there in the hurricane winds!
    I have noticed the tyre noise from the Karoo Street, but its nothing major. If the music and satnav is on inside the helmet, then I can hear it, even if its on low.
    Q. Any recomendations for a place to head to for a new helmet?
    My shark thats 14months old is annoying the crap out of me. I've now broken 4x clear visors and 2x tinted due to the way you have to take off and put on the visor. Its a problem lots of other owners have flagged up, but shark wont admit to or do anything about.

    Kneepads - Former owner's anti-theft ruse? "Yep, I'm 6'11", don't touch my horse." - seemed to work.

    You really drowned that filter. How can you screw it on without leaking out when it's filled to the brim? Also I think polishing the exhaust would be the LAST thing to do given the position of the oil filter...

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Рік тому +4

      There's only a tiny spillage if you spin it on quick, maybe no more than a tablespoon full, and the benefits of priming the filter far outweighs a tiny spillage.

  • @JDnBeastlet
    @JDnBeastlet Рік тому +2

    Hi Penny and Del. Another great video! I've got lots of stuff to say about this one. First, how nice that bike sounds - so sweet, just like a big inline four should. Second, that was quite an assortment of bolts holding the belly pan on. No two alike! Third, you can get a that oil filter with a nut on the end - the HF 138RC - not for tightening but makes them so easy to remove. Fourth, good to see you priming that oil filter. It's a great way to prevent oil starvation on startup. Well, I've said a mouthful. Take care, my friends. Be well and ride safe.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  Рік тому +1

      You're right, what a glorious fastener collection, that was impressive, did you notice there was an engine casing screw and even a battery terminal screw in there.. but hey, we've all done that, what ever works in a pinch right?.. And good call on the filter nut, arent they a simple and obvious addition?, why don't they all have them !!? but same as the air filter, i would have preferred a washable one, but that was a really good value kit, and that's what it came with.. ok for now as it all needed doing and i couldn't afford to be extravagant with all the other parts i want to buy for this bike.. Thanks again buddy, glad you enjoyed it. !

    • @besenwieslersepp1011
      @besenwieslersepp1011 Рік тому +1

      Another advantage of the 138RC is a slightly finer filter mesh.
      Should you notice the slightly smaller diameter in the inlet of the HiFlo air filter with a long tube inwards compared to the OEM part. I asked HiFlo: The filter was made after the pattern of the 2001 model. Suzuki changed the filter slightly after that. However, the HiFlo should have no effect on performance.

    Didn't realise that the oil can take that long to drain! I usually leave it draining for 20 minutes 😮 Bike looks much better with those mirrors on - those bar ends were too high and in the wrong place as you rightly said mate!

    Also good just to get the bike up on the bench and have a good look at everything. Its funny how one person spends time and money getting it 'their' way, just for someone else to reverse all the changes. You'll be painting that bare metal clutch cover back to black before you know it! ;)
