- Back in 1975, Toei and Shotaro Ishinomori created a team based Tokusatsu series featuring five soldiers in rainbow colored uniforms titled Himitsu Sentai Goranger. Unbeknownst to them, the show would go on to spawn an entire franchise that continues even to this day. With that in mind, is Goranger a worthy kick-off or just something that skated by through sheer luck? Watch to find out.

Fun Fact: Hiroshi Miyauchi, recognised as the lead of the then recent Kamen Rider V3, was hesitant to accept the role of Aorenger as he was already committed to another show and did not like the idea of playing second fiddle to Akaranger. In fact, casting the toku veteran as the cool Blue Ranger to complement Aka Ranger was pursued as a draw for audiences since it was feared at the time that red was seen as a girls' color. Ishinomori himself convinced Miyauchi to take the role of Akira Shinmei by identifying him as the Sasaki Kojiro to Tsuyoshi Kaijo's Miyamoto Musashi. Miyauchi was accomodated by having Aorenger be captain of the Variblune, allowing him to film scenes separate from the rest of the cast as well as spending more time voicing over Aorenger than appearing in the flesh for production of the early episodes. Miyauchi's presence was also highlighted by having his character appear last in the opening credits, despite Aorenger being the second Gorenger.

The original yellow ranger of Goranger committed suicide after the show ended just like Trini died in an accident after Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ended. It's just really depressing when their famous role types will eventually get them killed off.

Worst show is hard to say. For something I finished, either Kyuranger or Ninninger. For something that I found so bad I could not finish, Goseiger.
We'll mention it when we take a look at JAQK in the near future since the original Ki Ranger passed way after JAKQ vs Goranger movie.
Good idea for that too. That's assuming someone either subs JAKQ in full or Shout! ends up releasing it. Thankfully it'll only be a 34 episode series, which is nothing compared to Goranger's length.

I was nine years old in 1975 when I started watching this cult classic at 9pm on Saturday nights when the local Spanish Channel goes off the air and Tokyo TV takes over. Now 47 years later I finally found the DVD series and I am binging all 84 episodes. Let's face it. My childhood was awesome.

I do wonder what spelling Shout will use since most use Goranger but Toei uses Gorenger
I'm pretty certain they will use Gorenger since that is Toei's official English title, it's just that most people in the US spell it Goranger, so I stuck with that for the most part.
Well there is an interesting subplot about the hero’s trying to figure out who the Black Cross Futher is before we learn that he is an alien from The Black Cross Galaxy leading to that second design you mentioned earlier.
Well it was a single episode, but yeah, that was a good one.

I've only seen the first couple of episodes so I can't really say much about my own experiences with the series but I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed those episodes and I thoroughly enjoyed this review. I do like how, even though they joke around a lot, they don't go with that "We can't show anything remotely frightning because it's a kid's show" mentality. Also, I'm glad to hear that about the music and effects becuase you certainly can't say the same about the Kamen Rider series airing at the same time and especially not the following Kamen Rider series. For me, 70s toku is a hit or miss so I'm glad to know how enjoyable the first Sentai series is. Also, are all these episodes torrents because if not I would really like to watch this series.

I just noticed the gorangers visors look like their weapons. For example: Akaranger's visor looks like a curled up whip.

Goranger being the first Super Sentai for Toei and made in the same decade as Kamen Rider as well as Toei Animation shows like Devilman and Cutie Honey thanks to Go Nagai giving Toei the permission to make shows adapted from his manga.
I think in the 1970s Anime as well as Live Action Japanese shows really start to form their own niche genre as well as their own elements from the hero squadron genre perhaps around the same time as DC were forming the Justice League and Marvel were developing the Avenges in their comics.
Well JL and Avengers were a decade earlier, but I get what you mean.

I’m so glad that they spoofed half of these monsters in mashin sentai kiramager and even made a remake/spoof of the train episode.
I wouldn't say they spoofed them, they just went back to basics in Kiramager.
at the 10:15 mark, you mention that nothing had occured due to him transforming and his leg getting better, maybe the Goranger suits also heals injuries when in use, since most of the early Sentai shows are based around science as the source of their powers, it could make sense for the suits to assist medically as well as in combat.

Idk why japanese doesnt go crazy with gorenger even being the first sentai unlike in US with MMPR that spans from comic books etc. Nostalgic reasons maybe? I think MMPR is good but not that great unlike great shows such as Time Force,RPM, In Space.
It might just be a culture thing. It seems more often than not they are a one and done type of society. Granted, anime has changed a lot since then as now they are constantly doing sequel seasons and stuff that weren't based off a manga or something, but still. It could also be because their original yellow ranger actor is dead.
Two things. #1, correct me if I'm wrong, but if I recall, Goranger wasn't accepted as the "first" sentai till the 90's as it didn't have mechs. Battle Fever J had that crown as being the "first" up until then. #2, you also have to admit there is a HUGE generation difference with Goranger being 44 years old and MMPR being only 26 years old. MMPR generation is still kickin and in their prime to keep the hype up while the Goranger generation is either up there in age or getting up there in age thus the hype steadily going down.

I intentionally never told anyone since I had no idea if I was going to enjoy the show or not. :-) I expected it to take about four months for me to finish and it ended up being done in less than 2.

Early Sentai can be a tough binge, I finished Gorenger last week and I'm almost halfway through JAKQ. I hope by Dynaman things will really kick of because I know that Super Sentai seasons generally quite rad.
I feel like Denziman is where the show started to find itself, became damn good with Dynaman and Flashman, but then hit near perfection with Jetman and it kept going from there through Timeranger.

There is so much to talk about since this is the very first Super Sentai Season. And I have just finished watching it as part of my Super Sentai Marathon.
The music while very 70’s I like the main songs, and there was a few tracks that I did like.
The effects I weren't really bothered by expectilly since it was the very first Super Sentai Series, and even then I enjoy cheep practical effects 95% more than the live action movies that overused CGI.
I like the Ranger’s costumes such as the number of stripes, and how very vibrant the costumes are with the capes, with my only complaint being the holes in their helmets.
And It was also cool seeing the series changed by it’s latter half such as a new bar, new bikes, vehicles, weapons, and even Black Cross Army get a new base that isn’t just covered with rocks.
The main characters I thought were really good with my top favorites being Oiwa as Kiranger, and Peggy as Momoranger.
Though what really holds this series back for me is the overall writing and the large amount of episodes.
Granted I know that this is the first Sentai show and it was written back in the 70’s and it didn’t had a lot of the stuff such as the mecha.
But I still had high expectations just from the first 5 episodes.
And I actually did enjoy the last episode since the reason the Furrier fought the Rangers was because of his horoscope warning him of his demise and he wanted to prove it wrong by fighting the Rangers and nearly won, but then due to the constellation he was weaken, meaning he does have a weakness and they had to find it.
They defeated Golden Mask but all it did was revealed the location where there base is and even there town was in ruins.
But then they learned about the star constellation Cassiopeia thanks to Taro’s riddle. And it was a real constellation that I didn’t knew existed until after episode 84, and it just so happen to have 5 stars, and have syllables of the Rangers names.
So I have to wonder if they planned this out from the beginning or if they managed to found it on the fly, because for me it worked perfectly.
Though granted the revel at the end was kinda dumb, and it just reuses old stock footage from a previous episode, but even then I was expecting a very bare bones finally, but it wasn’t anyware as bad as you pointed out, and even then it was very satifing to see the Gorangers deffet the army since episode 1.
But for the rest of the episodes It felt very agrage as there wasn’t any that I disliked nor was there any episodes that I truly liked, it just kinda falls into the middle for me, and the fact that it was 84 episodes made it even harder for me.
So yeah I can’t say I really enjoy it as much as you do, but I am really glad I to see where it began, and I’m looking forward to J.A.K.Q. since it’s only 35 episodes so I quickly finished it before you know it.
If I was to rate it I give it a 6.5 out of 10. And yes that’s how I usually rate things.
I think what I ended up enjoying most about Gorenger was how much of a spy thriller it seemed to be over being a regular Sentai show. It took me by surprise and I enjoyed the ride.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yeah, I also like how the Black Cross Army are treated as an actual treat since we actually see them kill people, and I don't know why but I kinda preffer the white cloak the Fuher used in the first half, since he became really ridiculous in the second half that it was kinda hard for me to take him seriously.
This is just an idea, but I think It would have been better if Magman had survived episode 54 and stayed around awhile after Golden Mask was introduced. You could have had the two Generals taking turns coming up with plans and competing with each other for the Fuhrer's favor.
Agreed. That would have really made things so much better. It's also weird how Fuhrer's cloak just randomly becomes pink after a certain point.

I was never a fan of the single general format used here as well as the first few Kamen Rider series. It feels like a no brainer to have generals work along side each other and or sabotage each other's efforts. With the one general at a time that gets replaced by a new one format, it's easy for them all to become interchangeable and the show's progression to be gauged only by who's leading the villains.

Got a chance to watch it earlier this year. Didn't watch every episode but did watch most. Was more than I expected it to be.
Hopefully nothing interupts shout's releases before they get there.

It all depends on when JAKQ gets fully fansubbed (or released by Shout!). I was planning to review Maskman next year, but I may wait to see what Shout!'s plans are for the Pre-Zyu stuff. Granted, it would probably take them two year's to get to Maskman even if they did get more frequent with the Pre-Zyu stuff, so I may do so anyway.
Indeed, I 'am trying to watch all of Flash Man and Dyna Man on Kiss Asian, but they are not completed yet. Also If you review Mask Man that's ok, I saw that series and it was good, a few odd and questionable things here and there but good.

'70s Ishinomori's shows had some James Bond feeling with espionage and mystery, this reminds me so much of the first Kamen Rider series but with 5 heroes it has more variancy to the plot. It's not bad at all, but I admit the finale was pathetic and uninspired. "Nothing wrong with Black... except RX", true statement, that series was bad! Thanks for this amazing review.
Glad you enjoyed it. Ishinomori was an interesting fella when it came to writing. I had got for Christmas the 2001 anime adaptation of Cyborg 009 on Blu-Ray.

Sadly they are. Toei requires region codes on their licenses.

No, i mean a real sixth ranger. Maybe the Black Cross Army decide to make their own evil Goranger and sent him to attack the Gorangers until he was free from their's control and become the team's sixth member.
If this sixth member was real back there, i would imagine his color would be either black, orange, gold, silver, cyan, purple, navy, crimson, gray, white, brown, magenta, or bronze. I'm don't know.

It could go either way, but I can say I won't be having a mech section for JAKQ. The airship is barely even used in that show.

Kaiju no Kami also in all honesty my favorite was kenji asuka to me he was the one who was flawed the most and had the best character moments although I do admit he had way to much plot armor
Christian Anderson daigo was an actual good leader and he didn’t take any spotlight unlike lucky and right did and he has an actual good power up that he earned unlike right and lucky for getting theirs through strength

It just that the problem with daigo is that unlike someone like akaranger Who knew how to keep his emotions in control and assess a situation properly daigo came across as a Erratic man child who just so happens to be good at everything

I watched Gorenger over the summer and watching this video I found myself agreeing with a lot of your thoughts on the show. This show was honestly great and I found myself enjoying the characters and every episode except for the finale despite getting tired around the 60s section.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who was creeped out by KiRanger's Mask due to it being a straight black line. As a kid finding out about sentai both that outfit and all of Battle Fever J's literally scared me to pieces. That and also how I thought the rangers looked dumb on those bikes since I figured they would have a mech or airplane to travel with instead (before I learned this show had none)

Kind of interesting to learn about the very first Super Sentai series, and I agree it is sort of like watching a spy movie/series, especially when I saw one episode on this site. I think it would be worth it if they have an official release of this in the U.S. for those curious of the beginnings of this series before it became power rangers.

Do the Japanese consider the Goranger Suits as Iconic the same way we consider the Zyuranger suits Iconic. Since Zyuranger was the first for us in the States, It would make sense.

Fantastic reviews! Where do you get your super sentai blu rays? It's easy to find sentai from Jetman onwards as far as the shout factory dvds goes, but where do you find your pre-Zyuranger sentai boxsets?
I downloaded the fansubs that you can get on Nyaa. These ones came from Rampage. However, anything I do have that is pre-Jetman I had to import from Japan.
Am I the only one who feels like the Train Monster is the exact same one they used for Kiramager?

That's an odd, but interesting choice. Agent Carter was like the best MCU related show.

Supposedly this was originally going to be Japans loose adaptation of Captain America. Clearly it was never going to star Captain America, but they wanted another show after the success of Spiderman. It also clearly barely has any possible connection. besides the soldier theme, the head emblems, and maybe the boots and gloves? anywho i just find all these histories interesting and enjoy your summaries of these shows. Thank you. OH! and supposedly Marvel had originally intended to import the action scenes over and film american actors when unconstumed.... which.... sounds.... familiar...
Thanks. Yeah, I love when series have interesting production stories I can share, which is why it saddens me that most of the modern series don't have anything like that at all. Or at least ones that are publicly known.

One of Shotaro Ishinomori's most famous creations. I don't know why Shout haven't bothered with an official US/Western release yet, however. I mean, they did the original Kamen Rider before they did any of the others, so what's keeping them from doing Himitsu Sentai Gorenger?

So how many parts do you think the Finale should’ve been and what do you think should’ve happened in it. I am quite curious. Plus they do their finals like an Endgame with this being an exception.
To be honest, I don't remember the finale enough anymore to answer this question accurately anymore. If I recall right, it should ahve been a two parter.
