Bananas are so versatile and can add so much to the farm and kitchen. We love them, our animals love them and I bet you do to! Here are some tips for you on how to harvest bananas in the healthiest way for the future of your plant.
OneYardRevolution | Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening If you could grow bananas...they sure would be some very rare and expensive bananas wouldn't they be.(-: Thanks for watching Patrick!
Im in cambodia, do your tips apply to cambodian banana? Are all banana tips about the same? One tip we have here is not to cut the dry leaves in the hot season to keep the banana cool. We have about 4 hectares. Thanks for any advice.
Fantastic video. I'm sick of seeing all those videos of pesticides and chemicals being used, at last a natural way as it should be. I have just bought a garden in the highlands of Bali and want to make it totally Eco friendly, I think the local farmers will also benefit from your videos. Thank you.
Hi, I'm new to your channel. I was wondering about removing the sucker's (baby bananas). Do i move all of them or keep one or two with the mother plant. The mother hasn't flowered yet.
Gardening With Puppies Thank you for watching Paula! I just got a comment that someone is growing bananas in Washington state by heavy mulching and wrapping up the stock etc....so maybe you can grow them at the cabin?(-: That sure would make a great video if you could grow bananas in the mountains.
That would be quite an achievement. My biggest problem in Central Florida was that the plants fruited too late in the summer and did not have time to mature before the first frost. I was lucky to get three racks. The rest all died.
That interesting. Here in Washington state can't really grow bananas. A friend grow it, then harvest before fall hit. Wrapped the stock real will and cover the ground with heavy mulch. Next its all good.
Eco Oasis I sure hope to come visit you guys someday and see the amazing things that you are doing in petrson. Thanks for turning me onto permaculture. I have learned so much from your videos.
Sustainable Reaction Please keep us posted on your visit to Costa Rica. We would love to show you around. Great to know that you are learning from our videos.
Can you recommend a good book that has a chop and drop plants for Central Florida I got real sandy soil and I'd like to start working there on my two and a half acres
Stevy B Great question! There are a few ways to know your bananas are ready. You do want to wait until the leaves turn brown and die back. At this point you can still wait another week or two and they will usually be at the perfect stage. If you are harvesting for home use another sure sign is to wait until one of the bananas in the bunch turns yellow. This will insure the bananas are to there full ripeness and sugar levels, in turn giving you the full flavor and sweetness. Because we are harvesting to sell the bananas and they need to endure the travel time, we cant wait until one turns yellow and instead use the third method. Basically we are looking at the shape of the banana and watching for when it sharp edges round out and plump a bit. It takes a little practice to get this method down but becomes pretty obvious once you start watching for it. Thanks for watching and I hope this helped to answer your question.
Didn't know they were perennial. Always thought the babies were seedlings growing in place of a dying annual. I have never seen a banana tree in real life.
at the risk of sounding very stupid... how do you start a banana tree? same as any other tree.... stick seeds in soil....? and where do you get the banana seeds from? is it easy to get your own from bananas you have laying around?
A form of propagation is called Division. It makes other plants by growing them from the main plant, not from seeds. Most Banana varieties sold are seedless. Wild bananas have seeds about 5mm round.
Some people cut the banana flower off because they claim this practice makes the bunches bigger. Some people say that it doesn't matter. What's your opinion?
Great video. informative yet concise. love Permaculture! It just makes sense.

Hey Ken, We cut them off when we have time, I can't say for sure if it makes a difference, but is the standard practice here in CR.
