Gorgeous is nice (and subjective), but it's not enough for me. :) A product has to be functional, practical, sturdy and reliable - at a reasonable price too - based on quality components. Not only that, in a perfect world, everything should be built in the most sustainable way too. Sadly, this is the dicey part of the current market although I just heard about the Fairphone in Europe. Each platform iOS / Android etc has its own strengths. One of the reasons I moved from iPhone iOS to Android, years ago, was that Apple did not allow you to add music from different places (library restrictions; It's not like that anymore). Android-PC compatible products were a lot more flexible with that and Apple eventually followed. Syncing contacts from multiple sources and platforms used to be a nightmare with iPhones, years ago, while it was a lot simpler for PC-Android - at least in my workplace/home experience. Ultimately, there is room for healthy competition and innovation on all sides. My 2 cents to this interesting debate/conversation. :)
Why people complain that verge love apple ? Whats wrong with that ? They love other smartphones as well . Like this one they clearly said they loved it why people brag about they just love apple only .

No offence, but I don't think the wallpaper you guys used does justice for the s8 screen, especially in your beautiful review. To each his own I guess.
Lionel Franklin For S8, you can control music on two speakers at a time, 4x the range (120m LOS and 40m indoor range), 8x the data speed compared to 4.0.
Harangad Singh I was noticing that. I was thinking maybe next day delivery and a box that keeps it fresh was included in the price? bananas aren't that expensive. I'm not gin a make up a ridiculous price like some people are but it's definitely a lot cheaper around here.
Who started the trend of saying "this is best xyz that this company has ever made?" Obviously. It'd be unacceptable if a company came out with a new model of something that's worse than last year's. Such a stupid phrase that people and companies need to stop saying.
It seems so obvious that it can even sound stupid. But the new version isn't always the best version of a phone in terms of what it offers by the time of release and wether it''s so much of an improvement that it's worth for you to upgrade your last year's phone for the new one or not. The Nexus 6 is an example of that and for an unexpected reason the Note 7 could be another example of that...
Apple started that, I swear when you look at every Apple keynote consecutively throughout previous years, the first line you will hear out of all their mouths after the unviel is "This is the best iPhone we have ever made!" No durr, it obvioisly should be since its the lastest model
It's actually an original created by our graphic designer, William Joel. We're doing a Facebook Live on Thursday 4/20 at 11AM EST to show how he made it. Until then you can download it here: www.dropbox.com/s/nl3rsnbfm9u2etw/Verge_S8_Review_Wallpaper.jpg?dl=0
why?! I've used quality bluetooth headphones for over 2 years. And it's wonderful. Screw those headphone cords getting tangled up in everything you do !!
My cords never ever get tangled up, so what the hell are you doing? I literally just roll em up and put em in their case, and they come out exactly the same way as i left em. I literally just have to hold one end up, and they will unroll themselves.
Yet they still have haptic feedback on the home button and a larger screen. Apple said they didn't have enough space for a headphone jack due to their "Taptic engine". Looks like someones been lying.
iPhone also has headphone jack, it comes with an adapter. But once you get bluetooth AAC phones (and a phone that has AAC via bluetooth), it's game over, you won't ever want to go back to cords.
"Will it explode" is not what everyone's thinking. That happened once from Samzung because of a specific battery supplier from the positive and negative cells reaction when making contact. Videos on You tube for the last month showed it is not the case. You can drill a hole in the battery while charging and nothing happens.
MilitanT07 Grow up? I don't get it lol. Is he supposed to maybe grow money or grow a Google Fiber cable in his yard? How about you give him some money?
I’ve had this phone, the regular s8 black, for three years. Lot of memories and lots of burn in lol. The best Samsung phone ever. Unfortunately I switched to the iPhone 11 Pro.
Is it only me who never miss any tech reviews from MKBHD,Android Authority,Verge,Saf,..........but never got one for more than 2yrs due to less kidney and using cheap crap!😂
The s8 is a great looking device. But i'm still keeping my s7 edge. Still a solid device that is even better on nougat. And yes we get it... Note 7 was big setback for Samsung. We don't need to hear this mentioned in future Samsung reviews.
I truely love how you made this video. Not only is the music more than fitting, the thing where you let the S8 disappear through the wallpaper, it just looks magical. The cinematography and the animation are on point. The focus you apply on this device through the lense, it just looks like a high quality film and i am not kidding. After all its just a review but its good to know that some people still think quality is over quantity. Keep up with the great work. I am sure youve come along way!👍
Steven Juris There were around 50 devices that exploded. I'm not saying they shouldn't have recalled them, they did the right thing, the issue was just immensely blown out of proportion.
Dom Pérignon 50 on a freshly released phone within a week or two is not normal neither is it normal for them to still have issues on ones with different batteries. Phones can explode usually due to being damaged somehow or with a 3rd party charger.
Nobody said it was normal. Samsung realized there was an error, sadly after it was too late, but did a lot to try to fix it, including a recall of all of the phones, and getting a new battery manufacturer.
My friend had iPhone 7 plus and her hubby bought her Samsung s8 she love it soo much she wouldnt go back to iphone. Boy when I held Samsung s8 felt soo expensive n sleek and posh. So much feather samsung have that iPhone dont have ...
Diogo Almeida The face unlock is alot more advanced than the usual one........do you think samsung would forget that they had facial unlock since the s2??????......this is new and pushes the bounds of the regular facial recognition which I expect you to know required you to put your face in a designated oval show on the screen. This scans your face and is that's why it's basically the fastest unlock method on the device and to add to all that it also learns more about your face the more it scans it overtime and that makes it able to unlock the device at even weirder angles...
Diogo Almeida you see people don't talk about iPhone 6 exploding. . . if people don't know they need to search in UA-cam. . . cause apple wasn't like Samsung recalling units. . .
I'm pretty sure the only people that care that much about the Note 7 exploding are people that had their Note 7 blow up, which was a very small group of an already small group of owners that had the device. It's not that big of a deal.
Yet again.... Brilliant shots and incredible ambient feeling in this video. Just like in Lenovo Yogabook's review. Great job, The Verge is climbing to be my favourite way to check latest reviews...
As I thought... the Verge complains about the price of S8. Dude, even here in Australia S8 price is the same as base model of iPhone 7. Let that sink in...
I really love how you guys bring out the pros and cons even in your frames you show what good you get out of the product while bringing out their cons and i love the humour content. cheers!!
+Donald Sanders if you're going to make a joke at least try to make some sense in relation to the comment instead of just plopping a stereotype in there.
I always come back to this video. Lovely production, excellent sets, audio was good (almost musical). Only wished for more detail in stuff like camera and performance. By the way, is the background a home or studio or bar? Loved it!
Good job The Verge! I can say this is one of the best Galaxy S8 review I've ever watched. All of the graphics and editings is superb and clean. Keep making more! Can't wait for the upcoming videos.
tower six Apple's monopoly... Samsung makes dishwashers, smartphones, ovens, fridges, smartwatches, televisions, lightbulbs, laptops, microwaves, headphones, and vacuums. I'm sure I missed something. So yes, please continue on how Apple is a monoploy
I think your(the verge) videos are like perfect.. good background music.. a very confident & easy going reviewer & a funny part at end of the video. thumb's up to you guys.👍
Great review as usual! I am friggin' mesmerized by the shots where the wallpaper of the phone extends beyond the screen. I keep wondering if you just rested the phone on a bigger display showing the same image or if you actually printed it out. 🤔
But isn't Samsung using newer sensors on the S8/+ in addition to the new image processing. Who's doing their homework these days and why just speed past one of the most used aspects on the phone? You guys.
while that's technically true, it comes off like they dont even acknowledge that the camera is different hardware because they only point out that samsung made improvements on the software side of things
Whoa! this is review has some of the best cinematic shots I've ever seen, to me they help make a review enjoyable....almost like watching a movie. Also, great voiceover! it doesn't boggle you with specs but instead feels like a friend just telling you about a new gadget he got. I just can't say enough, great job guys!💙
Jey Teh get over it! it's just as annoying, lame, and childish to literally be on the internet crying over a phone, because something you don't want mentioned was mentioned. Haha it's a PHONE, ridiculous!
Sure it is overused but dude it's a big deal that Note 7 exploded, it's not even a year since it happen. The Flagship phone from a corporation as big as Samsung Exploded, that's a huge deal.
To be honest, we are going to hear these lame explode puns and jokes until a couple months after the Note 8 release. Remember bendgate on the iPhone 6, all the fuss over it ended some month's after the 6s launch.
Just gotta say, your video production skill and delivery has improved dramatically over the last year. The content has always been pretty good, but the polish, and elevation of your brand as one to take seriously in video has really hit the mark over this last year. Keep it up!
Zach P specs obv include the sensor Zach.. Its a new gen sony sensor which has btr low light capabilities than the s7 and s7 edge!! Very Shocking that it wasn't mentioned in the video..
Tony Gloria well it has one of the best cameras on any smartphone out there so if there's an issue with quality it'll be because of the Snapchat app, which should be updated to solve any quality issues.
Finally a review that didn't center 70% of the review talking about the camera as if that's the only important feature of the phone. They spoke about the phone even going into settings. That is a change from the always talk about the camera. Great review. I am still going to wait on the next IPhone.
lilmario0 if u an iphoney fan, why to u bother to watch reviews on the s8, evidently u ready to buy it, u tired on the iphoney, but u jus mad cuz u can't afford it
reg buff you should really go back to high school, or possibly elementary school. After learning how to use the English language correctly you wouldn't sound like such an idiot.
shortnamed explode "just as much" is a pretty silly thing to say, considering the gravity of the situation. This was a huge recall, a "few" phones didn't just catch on fire
uh no. They had the recall to PREVENT future problems. A "few" phones were the only ones to catch on fire. Also Apple has physically KILLED people with MacBook Pro and Air explosions in airports and the sporatic iphone fire here and there so people should really stop.
Exactly RadioactivePenguin776. My iPhone 5 can't even open most apps when it is lower than 40% battery. iPads are a waste of money bcs after one year they are kaput.
Maybe it's the natural lighting or the dark wooden themed cafe he's sitting in but the colour temperature is just beautiful. I really want to know what Camera is being used. From the amazing bokeh effect to the crispy close ups, I'm seriously impressed +TheVerge some serious improvements!!
Olaf Wicherink yes here's why.It will have nothing new .OLED has been used since stone age nothing special.Bezeless design isn't first we already have mi mix,LG G6 ,S8 so iPhone 8 isn't special..It's just that it's 10th anniversary blah blah and it's an iPhone.Truly the charm of iPhone died long time back
Everyone talking about the S8 but I also see a beautifully crafted video, loved every shot of it. Kudos! P.S I've got some clarification on filming, is it possible to contact anyone of the DP who did this video?
My note 4 just received a update a few days ago and the software is running great. Not bad for a older phone at all and surprised that they keep updating it. My S8 should be here soon though.
the processing hasn't slowed down on my phone, and I've had it for about 5 years. thanks for this video, though. I really want this phone, but I wasn't sure if I should get it, but now I am!
Best S8 review I have seen so far. But you missed a few things. You can re-map the bixby button with something else; the face unlock is not secure because it was pre-launch, after the 21st there will be an update that makes the phone more secure.
Thanks Samsung for creating something so beautiful! That's gonna wake Apple to make something really innovative, finally. (i hope) Looking forward to iPhone Edition o/
How much longer are you going to equate pixel count with quality? Just because the count is the same, does not mean, necessarily, that it is the same camera.
When a new phone comes out the first review I see is yours, I like everything about your videos( except the occasional apple fanboy-ism ). Keep up the good work and keep your eyes on the competition ( cause MrMobile is on the rise )
That's true. Sammy phones slow down so much after 6 months and battery suffer from it too mostly because of that amount of security paths it requests you to ALWAYS install. In a long-term it's not a good phone even liking this more by far than any iPhone but in the end I just need a better update-oriented-ecosystem as any iPhone. There's also some buyers getting trouble with those infinity diplays alleging it's getting red on the top.
iPhone 6 bending: It's okay to talk abt it and poke fun. Galaxy Note 7 catching fire: It's not okay and ppl should move on in life. Why is it that, nowadays, it's okay to poke fun at Apple and not Samsung/Android. Come on, if you can insult, don't bitch abt it when others do it to you.
man this phone looks GORGEOUS. Doesnt matter if u like iOS or Android. credit where credit is due. This phone is a home run by Samsung.
Gorgeous is nice (and subjective), but it's not enough for me. :) A product has to be functional, practical, sturdy and reliable - at a reasonable price too - based on quality components. kinda overused the explosion joke in this one dontcha think?
Why people complain that verge love apple ? Whats wrong with that ? They love other smartphones as well . Like this one they clearly said they loved it why people brag about they just love apple only .
well for such a big company it was an unforgivable mistake and they deserved to be bashed, no need to get salty over it.
Chongy Kong well everyone seemed to forget about the iPhone 4 exploding soooo
Arigin Then screw both Samsung n Apple lol. Let us all embrace banana phone.

The Verge You can remap the bixby button.......the third party app for it was even made before release.
Awaks you could temporarily. you can't anymore. Samsung literally tweeted yesterday it's ONLY for Bixpy.
This was patched by no-fun Samsung - you can no longer re-map it. Sadface.mpeg
Looks so dope! especially on amoled screen!
Should have included the bluetooth 5.0 part. This is the first phone on the planet with bluetooth 5.0
Jigar Sorathia true, good point. I know I personally won't get much benefits from it, but it's still a good thing to mention.
Jigar Sorathia lel there are no Bluetooth 5.0 enabled devices available yet 😂
Jigar Sorathia 4.0*
What are the advantages of 5.0?
Lionel Franklin For S8, you can control music on two speakers at a time, 4x the range (120m LOS and 40m indoor range), 8x the data speed compared to 4.0.
Will it explode? Yes. In sales.
Ramon McNally good one
Foxy Alice not really
👏👏👏
Ramon McNally 🖒W!👌

17$ for bananas ?!?!?!? That's BANANAS !!!!
Harangad Singh Outrageous! Bananas are really cheap in India and Pakistan
you so punny!
how d'ya like them apples

thanks guys, already set it as my wallpaper on my S7
SauMik Pal Can you please tell me the name of the wallpaper

Even when my phone and internet can't afford it, I'm watching this in 720P coz it's the gorgeous Galaxy S8!
720p? It should be 1080p by default and that's not even high enough... Grow up!
MilitanT07 poor people man! the default resolution is 240p for me🙄
Technox same here bro
MilitanT07 Grow up? I don't get it lol. Is he supposed to maybe grow money or grow a Google Fiber cable in his yard? How about you give him some money?
MilitanT07 Not everyone is a 12 year old living off of their daddy and mommy.
Grow up!
The cinematography in this review is stupid gorgeous. Huge applause to the people behind the camerawork-you all deserve it!

Nice job to whoever filmed this video! Every shot is beautiful
:-)
People seem to overlook that it was like 0.0002 percent of note 7s that exploded.
Dom Pérignon and that still is close to a hundred phones. Would probably have been more if they didn't recall them.

A really great indepth review. I liked the calming music and angles with all of the Verge neon design.

The sensor is what enables better light capturing capabilities and along woth the better processing you get a sharper and brighter image
This review is like a music video/movie/documentary. Well done!!!!
I'm disliking all videos that make an "explode" "catch on 🔥" reference. beat that dead horse!
This was a really nice vid, hats off to the video editor, and the camera man. Ofc the commentator as well!
where can i get that background wallpaper? link please!
www.dropbox.com/s/nl3rsnbfm9u2etw/Verge_S8_Review_Wallpaper.jpg?dl=0%EF%BB%BF
thanks :)
Dan Seifert, I really enjoy your reviews, keep the good work man!
What's the Snapchat quality??
Tony Gloria well it has one of the best cameras on any smartphone out there so if there's an issue with quality it'll be because of the Snapchat app, which should be updated to solve any quality issues.
Tony Gloria not as good as my 7 Plus but it's not bad
Has nothing to do with the camera. The Snapchat devs just don't care to properly optimize their app for Android phones.
Actually one of the best reviews out there tbh, easy to follow and concise. Keep it up man!
I Really Really Really Love this Wallpaper Thanks man I'm Subscribed
I love the effort you guys put into the video editing. Good job guys!
Actually there is an app i can't really remember it's name that enables you to map the bixby button to 2 or 3 apps based 1 or 2 clicks or long click
Ahmad Fahmy it's been patched by Samsung. Bixby button will only be for Bixby.
Finally a review that didn't center 70% of the review talking about the camera as if that's the only important feature of the phone. They spoke about the phone even going into settings. That is a change from the always talk about the camera. Great review. I am still going to wait on the next IPhone.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooorrrrring.. NOTHING NEW
Guess I'll be keeping my s7 edge for a few years.. Atleast till 4k phones come out
4K!! how fun!
Bookul hows vr with it though? Or can you even, just wondering
4k at 144hz funnnnn! Lol 10 years later?
That wallpaper is dope! Another outstanding review from The Verge once again.
Too bad its gunna be slow as heck by December
lilmario0 December ?? Did you see the UI lag at about 5 minutes ?
lilmario0 if u an iphoney fan, why to u bother to watch reviews on the s8, evidently u ready to buy it, u tired on the iphoney, but u jus mad cuz u can't afford it
reg buff you should really go back to high school, or possibly elementary school. After learning how to use the English language correctly you wouldn't sound like such an idiot.
This channel always nails it in terms of cinematography, some great shots from a variety of angles, loved it
people still remember the note 7 fiasco? iPhones (and other Lithium ion battery powered devices) explode just as much.
shortnamed not really tho. Theirs was flawed lol.
shortnamed this one doesnt! check out what's inside
shortnamed explode "just as much" is a pretty silly thing to say, considering the gravity of the situation. This was a huge recall, a "few" phones didn't just catch on fire
uh no. They had the recall to PREVENT future problems. A "few" phones were the only ones to catch on fire. Also Apple has physically KILLED people with MacBook Pro and Air explosions in airports and the sporatic iphone fire here and there so people should really stop.
shortnamed not true...
Wow. This is the best "review video" I've ever seen. Although Im an iPhone user, you made this s8 look INCREDIBLE. Thanks.
Software tends to get slower over time.. yup that what convert me back to ios
Adia Adithiya No it doesn't. My friend's S6 is as fast as it always was. If it slows down, it's your fault.
Adia Adithiya iOS gets stupid slow with updates though. my iPad mini first gen is useless after ios 9.3. That never happens with android.
Exactly RadioactivePenguin776. My iPhone 5 can't even open most apps when it is lower than 40% battery. iPads are a waste of money bcs after one year they are kaput.
Adia Adithiya which is exactly what iOS does. how many times a week do you restart your iPhone?
I have a 6s+ now and it slows down with the battery dropping to 0 occasionally
Great review and reviewer. And that stunning wallpaper! Thx to The Verge.
The design looks the same the only thing they did is make the screen bigger and round corners
Jonathan Ponce apple is trash
Jonathan Ponce smaller bezzel and no home button, you called that the same thing ?
Jonathan Ponce Really???
Maybe it's the natural lighting or the dark wooden themed cafe he's sitting in but the colour temperature is just beautiful.
I really want to know what Camera is being used. From the amazing bokeh effect to the crispy close ups, I'm seriously impressed +TheVerge some serious improvements!!
Expensive? lol usless iPhone8 gonna run $1000 and still it's worth right?
"useless"
yes, useless
Anand Rao it's a rumor as of now
Olaf Wicherink yes here's why.It will have nothing new .OLED has been used since stone age nothing special.Bezeless design isn't first we already have mi mix,LG G6 ,S8 so iPhone 8 isn't special..It's just that it's 10th anniversary blah blah and it's an iPhone.Truly the charm of iPhone died long time back
DatGuyWithDaGlasses how do you differentiate the price if there are normal S variant,S plus variant and iPhone 8?
Everyone talking about the S8 but I also see a beautifully crafted video, loved every shot of it. Kudos!
P.S I've got some clarification on filming, is it possible to contact anyone of the DP who did this video?
i can't believe a just watch a 8 minutes video!!
You can change the Bixby button with the app bixbye and you can change it to whatever you want
I love Dan. He's so cute. ♥️
You are awesome. Just upgraded from the S6 to the S8. Thanks for all the info. I think I'm really going to enjoy this phone. 😊
One of the best reviews I've seen, and well produced video. I'm waiting for next iPhone though.
A true review..... All i can say...
VERGE did cover all the aspect of the phone...pros & cons share it as much as u can...
My note 4 just received a update a few days ago and the software is running great. Not bad for a older phone at all and surprised that they keep updating it. My S8 should be here soon though.
I don't know who the Director of Photography was shooting this video, but, by God, he's amazing!
loved this video . Thank you for the insightful take on an amazing flagship and i really appreciate a custom wallpaper from the verge
A loud shout out to Billy Joel. The video editing and the graphics are done brilliantly. Great work. appreciate it.
the processing hasn't slowed down on my phone, and I've had it for about 5 years. thanks for this video, though. I really want this phone, but I wasn't sure if I should get it, but now I am!
Best S8 review I have seen so far. But you missed a few things. You can re-map the bixby button with something else; the face unlock is not secure because it was pre-launch, after the 21st there will be an update that makes the phone more secure.
www.theverge.com/2017/4/17/15328764/samsung-blocking-galaxy-s8-bixby-button-remapping
I got my phone today, re-mapped the bixby button. So far so good.
fantastic review as per usual! keep up the great work!
I love the smooth transition in this video and the backround music is awesome
Thanks Samsung for creating something so beautiful!
That's gonna wake Apple to make something really innovative, finally. (i hope)
Looking forward to iPhone Edition o/
I went from the note 4 to the s8+ and it was like going from a Honda to a mercadies, I absolutely LOVE! This phone. Could do without bixby though
iPhone 6 bending: It's okay to talk abt it and poke fun.
Galaxy Note 7 catching fire: It's not okay and ppl should move on in life.
Why is it that, nowadays, it's okay to poke fun at Apple and not Samsung/Android.
Come on, if you can insult, don't bitch abt it when others do it to you.
OMG immediately clicked on this video as soon as looked at that wallpaper
Their software is notorious for slowing down over time?
I've had my Galaxy S5 for almost 3 years and it's running fine
