I live in a very cold, dry climate and my fondant cracked constantly, no matter how much shortening I used. Thank you for this post. I suspected all along that the fondant was just too dry. Water makes sense.
You're very welcome! Yes, the last thing one wants to add to fondant is shortening. It won't allow the fondant to stick to itself and will actually cause your fondant to crack and tear even more. Water is the only way to go. I'm so glad you found this video helpful. Thank you for watching! :)
I have have to say I'm a huge fan!! In combination with your tips on icing cakes, covering a cake in fondant and keeping fondant moist, I covered 3 tiers of fondant without a crack, bubble or blemish!! I never been more confident in my abilities! Thank you soooo much for these tutorials!
Thank you so much! I'm so happy for you! Continue the awesome work!
This vid really helped out ,I have purchased several buckets of Satin ice fondant from Global Sugar Arts and it's always dry taste great but still daily dry. I was adding crisco shortening regularly I mean without questioning. I can't wait to try water. I actually had a duh moment watching this !!! Thanks
Glad you liked the tutorial Aisha! Thank you! :)
Great tip Laura&Arnie!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you Natoya! :)
Thank you thank you thank you !!! So simple but I never thought of it!!!

You're very welcome! :)
Thank you so much! Very helpful!
You're very welcome Midred! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Hi Laura! This is such a helpful tip thank you! I wish I knew this before :c So sometimes when I'm covering my cakes with fondant, they start to get all wrinkly at the bottom and I can't smooth them out. Is this because I rolled out my fondant to thick or did it dry out and become non-pliable?
Thank you for this demonsration. I saw a lot of videos saying dont use water but this looks soo smooth.
You're very welcome! The only thing that really should go near fondant in tiny amounts as shown in this video, is water. I always say not to ever use or go near fondant with shortening. That'll just ruin the consistency and strength of your fondant. Thank you for watching! :)
Thanks for that handy tip I NEVER would have thought of that as a solution
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching! :)
Wow! I was always told you should never wet fondant. Thanks I'll try this.
You're very welcome Erica! You shouldn't ever wet fondant after it's on your cake. This method is simply spritzing and not wetting. :)
Thank you!
Great tip, Laura! Thanks for letting us in on it! =)
You're very welcome Carole! Thank you! :)
Such an awesome tip! Thanks so much.
You're very welcome! :)
Thank you for this helpful tip. 😊 1st time to make a marshmallow fondant, and having a trouble "elepant skin" . Because of too much cornstarch.
You are VERY welcome Coline! Thank you for watching. :)
Thanks for sharing. After how many years of crying due to fondant drying so quick especially after trying so many brands(using loads of shortening also).
Stumbled on this tutorial today due to dry fondant again and had to rip it all off. It worked wonders from me covering to quilting pattern etc.
I'm so glad you found this video helpful Abiola! Thank you for watching! :)

_Thanks for the tip, from doing Cake Decoration in high school i often seem to get this problem that my fondant always cracks_
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching! :)
Laura, you have the best videos on UA-cam about cakes!!!! I learned so much from them!!! Thank you and your husband for the time you spend on them and hard work!!!! Quick questions. What do you use to dye your fondant? And what do you use to remove moisture from fondant - powdered 10x sugar or confectioners sugar?
Thank you Maria! That's very nice of you to say. :) We use gel food coloring to color our fondant. We don't use anything to remove moisture. It naturally evaporates once the cake is covered and out in the open. :)
Laura, thank you for the answer! Sorry, one more question please. What brand of gel color do you use?
Maria Kaftanovskaya You're welcome Maria! We use Wilton, AmeriColor, and Krystal Colors. :)
wow. brilliant. I thought adding water would have made the fondant sweat and difficult to work with but your fondant looks great.
Thank you! :)
Hi, thanks for the great tip, would that work for `revive` old fondant? Thanks
Thank you so much Laura.
You're welcome Taiwo! :)

Thank you Carmen! Thanks for watching! :)
Great, n thanks again guyz! 😉
Thank you! :)
This is the first time I’ve ever heard of using water. I was always told and was taught to use crisco to get the fondant soft and pliable. Have you ever tried crisco? Also how do you keep it from sticking to your hands while kneading it ? Thanks and have really been enjoying your videos 😁
Hi! In the beginning I also had the misconception that adding shortening (Crisco) added moisture to the fondant. Boy was I wrong! LOL! Shortening which is pretty much vegetable/animal "fat" has zero water in it. It actually will cause your fondant to tear and crack even more. It's greasy and doesn't allow the fondant to stick to itself at all. Now, I don't come anywhere near my fondant or gumpaste with shortening. You're very welcome and I appreciate you watching. Thank you!
Gracias Laura y tu esposo, por compartir tus truquillos....Dios los bendiga :)
De nada D'maris! Gracias! :)
Thanks!!😉
You're very welcome Leo! :)
Thanks for sharing! Great tip. :)
You're welcome! :)
my fondant feels fine and rolls fine, but when cake is left for a day or overnight, it becomes sticky! what am I doing wrong?
Thank you x
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching. :)
WOW just water, well who would have known, everyone except me apparently lol, thanks so much for these tips.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching. :)
Love your videos!!! Would you be able to use a fondant smoother without it sticking to the fondant? I usually rely on cornstarched fondant to be dry enough to be pressed with a fondant smoother. I tried using shortening and the fondant smoother got stuck on fondant and really didn't work. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much! We appreciate you watching. Yes of course you can use a fondant smoother. As long as your fondant doesn't have condensation on it your smoother should not stick. Make sure your cakes are only refrigerated when covering in fondant and not frozen or else you'll have tons of condensation (cake sweating). Also it definitely helps to make sure you are working in an environment that is free from humidity and warm air. I hope that helps. :)
Great Video ! Laura could you please make a tutorial with you actually make the cake recipes themselves?
Thank you! I generally don't do any recipe videos. My channel is dedicated for the "decorating" side of cakes. Thank you for asking. :)
I am using gumpaste that I made using Wilton preferred white fondant. I used your tutorial on adding the tylose. I also used the gel food coloring. Maybe I should add more water when working it? I am doing the Easter topper you showed with the cross and robe. The robe is what is cracking right in middle where it drops down. I enlarged the cupcake version to a cake topper. It's beautiful other than the cracks.
Hi Beverly, Yes most definitely. Spritzing it with water and kneading it will make your gumpaste more pliable and will stick together even more, thus, avoiding cracks. Gumpaste acts very strange depending on the time of year, temp. etc. Often I also have to spritz it more than normal with water to get it nice and pliable. I bet your Easter topper is lovely! :)
Great Tip!!! Definitley going to put this to work!!! I have crakes majority of the time!!! Thanks!!
Once again you explain very well I wouldn't of never knew that, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!😊😊
Thank you Juqetta! I'm so glad you think so. :) Thank you for watching! :)
Hi Laura. Absolutely love your tutorials! Can't get enough of it . When I colour fondant, it becomes very sticky sometimes or even when I am just working it before rolling it out. Why does it become so sticky? and how do I fix it please?
Hi Joulanda! Thank you so much! You can add a bit of cornstarch or powdered sugar do absorb some of the moisture. Gel food coloring has a lot of moisture and certain colors make fondant very sticky. :)
Hi Laura n Arnie, thanks again for the great tip! I thought using water might make it sticky. Can u do this to marshmallow fondant, n have u ever used it instead of store bought?
Hi Adriana! You're very welcome! You should be able to do this with MMF. We've only made homemade MMF once. :)
Thanks for another great tip! I have tried this in the past, and unfortunately when I use water the fondant becomes sweaty or sticky...is there anything else you would suggest
You're very welcome Nina! If your fondant becomes too sticky or moist, that jus means you're using too much water. Try using less. :)
Wow!thnk God i saw this vid coz sometimes i have a problem like this and i dunno what to do..so only a bitnof water helps?how about if its already in a cake and having this problems?can i just put a bit of water or just shortening?thank u laura and arnie for sharing,Godbless always.
Hi Nins! You're very welcome! Glad you liked the video. Once your fondant is already on your cake, there's really nothing you can do about it. This is just to treat the fondant before kneading and rolling it out. God bless you too! :)
Hi Laura. When I make gumpaste decorations I do the water process to keep my gumpaste the right consistency but after they dry they Crack and look like elephant skin in a few places. Is there a way to fix this after they have dried? How can I prevent this? Thanks in advance for you advice. Love your tutorials. God bless.
Hi Beverly, There's no way to fix cracks after gumpaste has dried. This must be avoided while sculpting. One thing that will really help avoid cracks is to not use shortening at all while sculpting as this creates more cracks and wrinkles. What gumpaste are you using?
wonderful
Thank you Carolina! :)
great tip thanks for sharing! I have a christening cake to do, but we have hot weather, and im so worried it will crack before I can deliver it. do you think I should cover the cake nearer to delivery date as poss? I will be royal icing decorating it, to x
You're welcome Maria! Once your fondant is on your cake, there's no reason for it to crack. I recommend icing and covering your cake in fondant no more than a day or 2 before delivery. Hope that helps! :)
Thank u! Its so hot here...
MARIA JOANNOU
wow! thanks for this! I was told at the cake store that the reason my fondant cracked is that I didn't knead it enough when I put the food colour in?is this true?xx
+Tina Pearce HI Tina! You're very welcome. Not at all. Fondant cracks because it's lost its moisture. Just spray some water and knead. :)
Quick question for you, what type of matt do you have there? It looks like a large silpat. I have the Wilton mats and I have to crisco/powder sugar the heck out of it so my fondant doesn't stick. I would love to know where to get yours. Thanks!
This is a large silicone mat by Ateco. You're welcome. :)
Hi Laura !! Please help me !!! How can avoid the sweating on a cake covered with fondant ? ..i live in Miami, i always try to have my ac low But even that doesnt help... How u do it ?!! Love ur work and tutorial!! And i love serving u working with your husband...God bless you guys!!!
Hi Virginia! Thank you so much! :) If it is humid where you live, you will struggle with condensation a little more than most. My brother lived in Miami and I know how humid it can get there. Having refrigerated air helps a lot to keep the humidity in your air down. :) God bless you too! :)
Thanks a lot dear am from Uganda 🇺🇬
You're very welcome Hawa! I appreciate you watching. :)
what type of fondant do you use? do you make yours or buy it?
We use a lot of Fondx and Fondarriffic.
Good morning Laura!! What is that mat called? I've been searching and cannot find it. Thanks!
HI Kenneth! Here's the link where I purchased mine: www.amazon.com/Ateco-Inch-Fondant-Work-Mat/dp/B000KESPXU/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=krkocade-20&linkCode=w01&linkId=4TPORJ2JSU4RGDFZ&creativeASIN=B000KESPXU Hope that helps! :)
Hi..I was wondering what's the best crumb coat to use with fondant..specially if your in a country with typical hot weather conditions.I learned the hard way that fondant could sag beyond repair.and it totally ruined my whole cake.
Hi Marj, We have our Perfect Icing Consistencies tutorial you can check out for the crumb coat icing we use as well as the outer coat. We live in the desert and it's typically very warm here, but the cakes are always kept in a cool and dry room or venue. We don't ever recommend putting cakes outside in super hot weather. No icing can withstand that. If the fondant sags however, it could be the icing, or, mainly the cake. If the cake is too soft it will sag.
you are awesome
Thank you! :)
Hi laura, Your tips act like a miracle in my life. I just love ❤️ you! What more can i say! May God bless you! Always...
Can i add water to fondant as a safe side even when I don’t feel that it has dried out? Just a little bit? Your answer will be anxiously waited!
I ruined a cake order yesterday due to the cracks and had to make it all over again but results were same then i had to over do the decorations to hide the cracks. So much stress! 😣☹️😭
Thank you so much Saher! That's very kind of you! God bless you too! You can definitely spritz your fondant with water and knead it in before you roll it out so you can have more time to work with it before it starts to dry out on you. :)
Krazy Kool Cakes & Designs Thanks a lot! Your reply means a lot to me! ❤️💕🌹
Thank you I needed this I made cake 2 days ago and the fondant kept cracking 😅
You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video. :)
Hi, does this work on all fondant? may I know what brand you're using? thank you
Hi there! I've never tried every single type of fondant, but hopefully it does. :) I think this was Satin Ice I was using on this video. On the few fondants I've tried, it's worked. :)
Will that work also for homemade fondant and also when I roll it out to put it on my cake if I Spritz it while I'm kneading it will it stay pliable like that when i cover the cake? with no cracks?
Yes. :)
Krazy Kool Cakes & Designs hi I just have one more question if that's okay, my mother and I are always using box cake recipes is there any chance you might have a really good recipe for a homemade batter from scratch. Thank you I would appreciate it very much!
I make my own fondent and follow the recipe and it still cracks just as soon as I put colouring in and tryed the water and tryed the tylose and it didn't help please help
this is random but i love your pizza cutter could you tell us where you bought it or the brand of pizza cutter :]
Thank you Mario! You won't believe it but this pizza cutter is like 9 years old and I think I bought it at a dollar store. LOL. It doesn't even have a brand name on it. :)
Do you use store bought fondant, if so what brand? Will this work on marshmallow fondant?
I order mine online. Most of the time we use Fondx and/or Fondarrific. It should work on MMF as well.
I have a question,,, at the end of the cake decorating process how is the fondant supposed to feel(be) hard? Soft? When i finish mine they always feel a bit hard like a cast type of thing? Lol dont knw if thats right? Tanxs for any help
That sounds about right. :) Only the very outside should get a tad bit hard but once you bite into the cake, the fondant should feel soft because it moistens right away in your mouth. :)
Thank you for the tip but what about when you add colour and is sticky if I add corn flour or icing sugar starts to break it. Any advise?
If your fondant is getting too sticky when you add color, you're either adding too much color, or your fondant was already too moist before you ever added the color. The only thing I would add to sticky fondant to make it a bit drier would be a little bit of cornstarch. Nothing else. If it get too dry just spritz a tiny bit of water and knead it in. Hope that helps. :)
Thanks for the tip! What brand fondant do you use? I just used Satin Ice on my cake yesterday and it is already cracking as the cake settles. I’m unhappy with the result!
You're very welcome! We use a lot of Fondx, Fondarrific, and for black and red we like to use Wilton. .
How do you prevent it from sticking to the rolling pin when you roll it out if you spray it with water?
HI Zoe! Great question! Definitely avoid water touching your fondant when you're rolling it out as this will certainly cause it to stick. You can lightly powder your surface with either confectioner's sugar or cornstarch (which is what we like to use) to avoid the fondant sticking to your rolling pin. Hope that helps. :)
Hi laura, i am having another question. Should i spray water on the cake before applying fondant. It takes time to stick to the cake or should i use damp paper towel to moist the cake. I need your suggestion plz plz
Hi Saher! Yes, you can spritz water on the buttercream before you cover in fondant. You're very welcome! :)
Krazy Kool Cakes & Designs Thanks a lot! God bless you always...
What brand of fondant do you use and can this be done with mmf
Most of the time we use Fondx and/or Fondarrific. It should work on MMF as well.
This was so weird! I was working on a project just now and my fondant was cracking so I was like im going to go see if there s a video about this and then you upload a video on that exact thing lol awesome thanks
That's awesome! You're very welcome! :)
Hi some say use cornstarch to avoid drying fondant when rolling and some say powder sugar. Anyone help? My fondant always crack :(
Hi Ju Ju! Actually both of those act as "drying agents" and WILL dry out your fondant, not avoid it from drying out. I use cornstarch when I roll out my fondant but as little as possible. I avoid my fondant drying out my spritzing it with water and kneading it in before I start rolling it out. This way my fondant is "extra moist" and by the time I'm done rolling it out, even though it did absorb some of the cornstarch, it still isn't dry. I hope that helps! This tutorial explains what I do perfectly. Hope you get a chance to watch it. :)
Thank you so much. I will certainly try doing that :) Hope it will work out for me :)
Krazy Kool Cakes & Designs it
Hi Laura, your videos are extremely helpful. Just a few questions- can we substitute water for crisco or any other product?? And by doin so will this affect the fondant when drying .?
Thank you Dinselmarie! I would not recommend Crisco. Crisco does not allow the fondant to bind to itself and will only increase your elephant skin, cracks, and wrinkles! :)
If you see get dry again but the fondant is already on the cake can just spritz the cake a little to add a little moisture
Hi Erin, You actually WANT your fondant to dry once it's on there. Once your cake is covered, don't go anywhere near it with water. Hope that helps. :)
@@krazykoolcakes thanks so much
I love your voice
Thank you so much! That's so kind of you! God bless you! :)
What about after you’ve put it on the cake? How to you prevent cracks from occurring please?
Hi Nims! Thank you for your question. After the fondant is on the cake it should not crack. Cracks only happen as you're applying the fondant. I hope that helps. :)
Hi my Fondant is nice when I'm needing it when I apply it to the cake it gets the cracks
Hi Irma, Try adding more moisture to your fondant than you think you need that way it won't crack. Try practicing covering your cakes faster that way you don't give the fondant time to dry out. :)
+Krazy Kool Cakes & Designs thank you Laura your the best!!
thank you for the tip I will give this a go
You're very welcome! :)
So do u not use shortening on your hands? That is the way that I learned to use it.
Only if it gets a bit sticky. But the shortening does nothing for reintroducing moisture back into the fondant. Shortening will keep fondant to sticking to itself, therefore more shortening=more cracking and tearing.
Mem and sir in which temperature foundent stored and foundent cake making
Hi Baji! We always store our fondant at room temp. Covered in plastic and then in a container until we need to use it. Hope that helps. :)
Does this tip work on marshmallow fondant?
Hi Trina, Yes it definitely does. :)
Hi guys, thanks for that very helpful tip😉👌 Maybe an additional little tip from me, I always take about a spoon of Glycerin (did I spell that right?😶) it make your hands real soft and keeps your fondant/gumpaste really pliable and no cracks or elephant skin😉👍. Just be sure to use the Glycerin for the food industry, not the ones were you can make things like soap😉 Easy to come by at pharmacy's or webshops👌
Happy cakings to all, greetings from the Netherlands, Tamara ❤
Hi Tamara! Glad you enjoyed it! I've never tried it, never had a need for it, but may work for some. Thanks for watching! :)
😲😲😨😨😨😨 tku so much !!!+
My pleasure Alexa! Thank you for watching! :)
