    I live in a very cold, dry climate and my fondant cracked constantly, no matter how much shortening I used. Thank you for this post. I suspected all along that the fondant was just too dry. Water makes sense.

      You're very welcome! Yes, the last thing one wants to add to fondant is shortening. It won't allow the fondant to stick to itself and will actually cause your fondant to crack and tear even more. Water is the only way to go. I'm so glad you found this video helpful. Thank you for watching! :)

    I have have to say I'm a huge fan!! In combination with your tips on icing cakes, covering a cake in fondant and keeping fondant moist, I covered 3 tiers of fondant without a crack, bubble or blemish!! I never been more confident in my abilities! Thank you soooo much for these tutorials!

    This vid really helped out ,I have purchased several buckets of Satin ice fondant from Global Sugar Arts and it's always dry taste great but still daily dry. I was adding crisco shortening regularly I mean without questioning. I can't wait to try water. I actually had a duh moment watching this !!! Thanks

    Hi Laura! This is such a helpful tip thank you! I wish I knew this before :c So sometimes when I'm covering my cakes with fondant, they start to get all wrinkly at the bottom and I can't smooth them out. Is this because I rolled out my fondant to thick or did it dry out and become non-pliable?

  • @RajaaShakir

      You're very welcome! The only thing that really should go near fondant in tiny amounts as shown in this video, is water. I always say not to ever use or go near fondant with shortening. That'll just ruin the consistency and strength of your fondant. Thank you for watching! :)

    Laura, you have the best videos on UA-cam about cakes!!!! I learned so much from them!!! Thank you and your husband for the time you spend on them and hard work!!!! Quick questions. What do you use to dye your fondant? And what do you use to remove moisture from fondant - powdered 10x sugar or confectioners sugar?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  10 років тому +1

      Thank you Maria! That's very nice of you to say. :) We use gel food coloring to color our fondant. We don't use anything to remove moisture. It naturally evaporates once the cake is covered and out in the open. :)

    This is the first time I’ve ever heard of using water. I was always told and was taught to use crisco to get the fondant soft and pliable. Have you ever tried crisco? Also how do you keep it from sticking to your hands while kneading it ? Thanks and have really been enjoying your videos 😁

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  5 років тому +8

      Hi! In the beginning I also had the misconception that adding shortening (Crisco) added moisture to the fondant. Boy was I wrong! LOL! Shortening which is pretty much vegetable/animal "fat" has zero water in it. It actually will cause your fondant to tear and crack even more. It's greasy and doesn't allow the fondant to stick to itself at all. Now, I don't come anywhere near my fondant or gumpaste with shortening. You're very welcome and I appreciate you watching. Thank you!

    Love your videos!!! Would you be able to use a fondant smoother without it sticking to the fondant? I usually rely on cornstarched fondant to be dry enough to be pressed with a fondant smoother. I tried using shortening and the fondant smoother got stuck on fondant and really didn't work. Thank you!!!

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  3 роки тому

      Thank you so much! We appreciate you watching. Yes of course you can use a fondant smoother. As long as your fondant doesn't have condensation on it your smoother should not stick. Make sure your cakes are only refrigerated when covering in fondant and not frozen or else you'll have tons of condensation (cake sweating). Also it definitely helps to make sure you are working in an environment that is free from humidity and warm air. I hope that helps. :)

    I am using gumpaste that I made using Wilton preferred white fondant. I used your tutorial on adding the tylose. I also used the gel food coloring. Maybe I should add more water when working it? I am doing the Easter topper you showed with the cross and robe. The robe is what is cracking right in middle where it drops down. I enlarged the cupcake version to a cake topper. It's beautiful other than the cracks.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  9 років тому +1

      Hi Beverly, Yes most definitely. Spritzing it with water and kneading it will make your gumpaste more pliable and will stick together even more, thus, avoiding cracks. Gumpaste acts very strange depending on the time of year, temp. etc. Often I also have to spritz it more than normal with water to get it nice and pliable. I bet your Easter topper is lovely! :)

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  9 років тому

      Hi Joulanda! Thank you so much! You can add a bit of cornstarch or powdered sugar do absorb some of the moisture. Gel food coloring has a lot of moisture and certain colors make fondant very sticky. :)

    Hi Laura. When I make gumpaste decorations I do the water process to keep my gumpaste the right consistency but after they dry they Crack and look like elephant skin in a few places. Is there a way to fix this after they have dried? How can I prevent this? Thanks in advance for you advice. Love your tutorials. God bless.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  9 років тому

      Hi Beverly, There's no way to fix cracks after gumpaste has dried. This must be avoided while sculpting. One thing that will really help avoid cracks is to not use shortening at all while sculpting as this creates more cracks and wrinkles. What gumpaste are you using?

    Hi..I was wondering what's the best crumb coat to use with fondant..specially if your in a country with typical hot weather conditions.I learned the hard way that fondant could sag beyond repair.and it totally ruined my whole cake.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  7 років тому

      Hi Marj, We have our Perfect Icing Consistencies tutorial you can check out for the crumb coat icing we use as well as the outer coat. We live in the desert and it's typically very warm here, but the cakes are always kept in a cool and dry room or venue. We don't ever recommend putting cakes outside in super hot weather. No icing can withstand that. If the fondant sags however, it could be the icing, or, mainly the cake. If the cake is too soft it will sag.

      Thank you so much Saher! That's very kind of you! God bless you too! You can definitely spritz your fondant with water and knead it in before you roll it out so you can have more time to work with it before it starts to dry out on you. :)

      Hi there! I've never tried every single type of fondant, but hopefully it does. :) I think this was Satin Ice I was using on this video. On the few fondants I've tried, it's worked. :)

      I order mine online. Most of the time we use Fondx and/or Fondarrific. It should work on MMF as well.

    I have a question,,, at the end of the cake decorating process how is the fondant supposed to feel(be) hard? Soft? When i finish mine they always feel a bit hard like a cast type of thing? Lol dont knw if thats right? Tanxs for any help

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  10 років тому

      That sounds about right. :) Only the very outside should get a tad bit hard but once you bite into the cake, the fondant should feel soft because it moistens right away in your mouth. :)

    Thank you for the tip but what about when you add colour and is sticky if I add corn flour or icing sugar starts to break it. Any advise?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  8 місяців тому

      If your fondant is getting too sticky when you add color, you're either adding too much color, or your fondant was already too moist before you ever added the color. The only thing I would add to sticky fondant to make it a bit drier would be a little bit of cornstarch. Nothing else. If it get too dry just spritz a tiny bit of water and knead it in. Hope that helps. :)

    How do you prevent it from sticking to the rolling pin when you roll it out if you spray it with water?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  3 роки тому

      HI Zoe! Great question! Definitely avoid water touching your fondant when you're rolling it out as this will certainly cause it to stick. You can lightly powder your surface with either confectioner's sugar or cornstarch (which is what we like to use) to avoid the fondant sticking to your rolling pin. Hope that helps. :)

    Hi some say use cornstarch to avoid drying fondant when rolling and some say powder sugar. Anyone help? My fondant always crack :(

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  6 років тому +3

      Hi Ju Ju! Actually both of those act as "drying agents" and WILL dry out your fondant, not avoid it from drying out. I use cornstarch when I roll out my fondant but as little as possible. I avoid my fondant drying out my spritzing it with water and kneading it in before I start rolling it out. This way my fondant is "extra moist" and by the time I'm done rolling it out, even though it did absorb some of the cornstarch, it still isn't dry. I hope that helps! This tutorial explains what I do perfectly. Hope you get a chance to watch it. :)

    Hi Laura, your videos are extremely helpful. Just a few questions- can we substitute water for crisco or any other product?? And by doin so will this affect the fondant when drying .?

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  10 років тому

      Thank you Dinselmarie! I would not recommend Crisco. Crisco does not allow the fondant to bind to itself and will only increase your elephant skin, cracks, and wrinkles! :)

    • @krazykoolcakes

      Hi Nims! Thank you for your question. After the fondant is on the cake it should not crack. Cracks only happen as you're applying the fondant. I hope that helps. :)

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  9 років тому +2

      Hi Irma, Try adding more moisture to your fondant than you think you need that way it won't crack. Try practicing covering your cakes faster that way you don't give the fondant time to dry out. :)

    So do u not use shortening on your hands? That is the way that I learned to use it.

    • @krazykoolcakes
      @krazykoolcakes  10 років тому

      Only if it gets a bit sticky. But the shortening does nothing for reintroducing moisture back into the fondant. Shortening will keep fondant to sticking to itself, therefore more shortening=more cracking and tearing.

  • @tamaracleef2967

    Hi guys, thanks for that very helpful tip😉👌 Maybe an additional little tip from me, I always take about a spoon of Glycerin (did I spell that right?😶) it make your hands real soft and keeps your fondant/gumpaste really pliable and no cracks or elephant skin😉👍. Just be sure to use the Glycerin for the food industry,not the ones were you can make things like soap😉 Easy to come by at pharmacy's or webshops👌
