Two things DOYO (Abu, Lew's, etc.) needs to fix is the drag star/handle gap, even cheaper Shimano and Daiwa reels have a spring to fix it. Second the better models need a dual pinion support for gear life and smoothness. This is why a 7 bearing Shimano feels better than an 11 bearing DOYO.
I so wish Purefishing would finally take things a step further with their high-end products/brands and ditch the threaded drag star so I don't have to look at it next to my Shimanos and Daiwas and get drove nuts by the gap at the handle, such a missed opportunity with the new zenon line
Bfs is still niche every where my dude even in Japan it's not that huge. But it is growing super fast. When people find out how fun it is they are hooked.
like you said, this reel is marketed for saltwater bfs. no one fishing the gulf coast or the atlantic coast uses 1 gram lures. even a shrimp and a hook weight more then a gram. i had a 2016 aldebarron bfs I ordered from digitaka. fishing for redfish over 4 months destroyed it. the main gear teeth were almost completely shorn off. i just caught a bull shark friday using my tranx 200 with 13# drag. the steel which is hopefully stainless, is I believe made for saltwater. I just went to japan lure and all they had was the new zenon beast!. depending on your casting results i might consider one although i dont use anything under 1/4oz jigs plus Berkley gulp shrimp.
The main fish they target in the Japanese SW BFS scene is horse mackarel. RX Angler has been using his 16 Aldebaran for big reds with no issues for at least a year or more.
Many, many people on the Gulf coast throw 1 gram lures. On the Texas coast we get into back lakes and they get very skinny where if you throw larger lures the who back lake will get spooked. Maybe try loosening up your drag and trying not to just horse a fish in and your gears will last. Btw, nothing under a 1/4 oz jig?!? That's the heaviest most here would consider fishing.
@@ETuss713 1/24oz is around one gram. i really doubt many, many people are throwing 1/24oz lures for redfish. i too have a few back lakes in Florida. i use 1/4 to 3/8 jigheads plus gulp shrimp, have no problems catching them. the red in my youtube picture weighed 35 pounds. you aren't catching that with a bfs reel and 5# braid. my aldebaron bfs was a great reel for rat reds and trout and flounder. fact of the matter is that the main gear teeth were almost completely shorn off. very possible it was me because i was using 15" braid and a 1/4 jighead.
@@creekredfishingmastery wrong. Not everywhere is Florida. We use BFS reels with 5lb or .8, 1.0 PE/ braid catching tailing reds in 6 inches of water. There's many many videos on YT showing exactly that. RX Angler is one of them that fishes the exact same waters as me.
@@ETuss713 im not arguing that about bfs reels. like i said ive used the great aldebarron. im arguing the use of 1/24oz lures for satwater. i have watched every video rx angler has made. HE is the reason I got the aldebarron from digitaka. im also saying you aint catching a 42" 35# red like I did with a bfs reel. this past friday i caught a bullshark, a 30.5" red, 3 slots around 22" and a rat red. no way on earth are you catching a bull shark with a bfs reel and 5# braid. Im a fan of bfs reels. i just want some more drag and beefier main gears. this abu the reel test looked at has my interest. i use a shimano tranx 200 which has issues casting 1/4 jigheads more then 10 yards. i just noticed that daiwa usa has a new coastal sw 80 coming out soon. im interested in that as well as the new tranx 150.
Part 2- Abu Garcia not known for Smoothness??!! abu Garcia were originally Precision Clocks and some the first Taximeters!! You clearly haven't fished with any Real Swedish Abu Garcia reels yet, have you??😃 I bought my first one in 1974, and it's now in my collection. I have over 50 reels (mostly abu Garcia baitcasting)!! When I bought my first Abu Garcia reel in early 1970s, Shimano baitcasting reels did not exist!! Their first Spinning Reel came out in 1983 and not a day before!! Abu Garcia made their first baitcasting reel in 1957!! This not say that Shimano reels are not good!! We all know that Japanese are Very intelligent and dictated people!! Shimano designs were undoubtedly inspired by Abu Garcia reels, in fact a Shimano Bantam, which happened to be my first Shimano and most of it's internal moving parts parts were interchangeable with Abu Garcia reel parts!!! However the fine engineers at Shimano (in Japan), Soon came up with their own designs, and anyone who denies that, is either narrow minded or jealous of Shimano's accomplishments!!😃 As for the reels you reviewed, I wouldn't pay $1.00 (one dollar) for, let alone $500.00🤣 Because I have been Spoiled with some of the most with some of most incredibly fine designs of Abu Garcia, such as their 2 Speed reels, that were not marketed to the fullest!! These amazing bait casters were equipped with an Automatic Transmission System!! Once I put a huge Quickfish lure on, to creat immense drag and to See if the 2 Speed gear system would go into low gear (as if I had big Steelhead or Salmon on. And to my amazement the Automatic "transmission" still allowed me to retrieve the lure in High Speed!! And it would Only go into Low gear when I was playing Salmon or Steelhead!!
Would this be considered a good reel overall for beginners in baitcasting? Im thinking paired with normal baitcast baits it will help with backlashes. Im fairly new to baitcasters and have to respool every 3 to 4 trips lol. Thx
Look into getting a shimano dc reel if that’s what you’re worried about, look at the slx and curado dc, as well as the Jdm scorpion dc. I actually got my scorpion dc today and it’s crazy nice.
Jordan hit the nail on the head. I'm 39 and didn't get into bass fishing u til 2 years ago and was having issues with backlashes so bought the slx dc and gave my black max away. Now I own a curdo dc and nother slx and a few other lews for other setups and have zero issues with backlashes on any baitcaster. Good luck

Hey! Sorry for asking the question here. If you had to choose a butget reel but only one out of the box that can throw 2gr - 10gr without problems what would it be. Thanks in advance Jonas and thanks for a really good channel.
Just got my 22aldebaran xg delivered, honestly i think its a downgrade, knobs dont seem to have bearings (or if they do, those suck), grips are uncomfortable, etc. further specs and looks are really nice, the brake knob isnt actually that bad. Havent fished with it yet, though i am thuroughly disappointed that they didnt include one of those neoprene reel bags. smoothness isnt actually improved that much, and im absolutely furious with the fact that i didnt keep my old aldebaran.
The improvements are in the ultralight casting range, sub 2 grams and also casting feel. Its smoother, quieter, and faster than the 16. Both my 22s are a step up in smoothness over the 2 16s I have as well.

That spool weight being a huge mystery is an understatement!
My guess is that most of the weight of the spool is in the shaft. Which don't need much momentum to spin.
I just bought a shallow spool. The line capacity is not enough for me.If you get a couple snags you would have to respool.
