Thanks. Almost lost me too when a few steps were not illustrated from your video but overall, with a little tech smart, I was able to get it. I guess my question I still have is... it only seems that I went from one email base to the next..! They are not downloaded to my hard drive. Am I missing something? Thanks

Looks like the original emails remain on gmail, too. Like you're not downloading and removing them from the online gmail platform- is that correct?

This is the downside. I tried transfering my emails to another google account, but since it was from a school gmail, it wouldn't let me transfer the emails. I had to download them as described in this video, and they were also unorganized. As far as I know, there is no way to transfer the email labels and I don't know how to reorganize them within Thunderbird. I hope someone has this knowledge...
Does Thunderbird have full access to your email to be able to read, delete and etc.?
I use Outlook 365. I've nearly filled up the 15gb of free space in Gmail. Does exporting the contents of my Gmail inbox mean that the space will be cleared up?

I find the browsing interface of ThunderBird not as convenient and clear as gmail. It separates every email rather than arranges them in a hierarchal order like Gmail does. Do you happen to know anyway to achieve that?
Hi. I don't understand how Thunderbird works. After I sign in to Thunderbird it automatically loads all my emails from Gmail. So basically I wouldn't need to import them cause I alreay have them there. BUT... If I delete them in the original gmail account, do they get deleted from Thunderbird as well? I want to free up all the gmail space.

My import export MG tool doesn’t give all the options. Nothing for import inbox files. Mine says v14.0.1. Do I need a different one? My thunderbird is 115.8.1

Step missing in video: After you downloaded Thunderbird and opened it it had a folder called Inbox and was apparently connected to an email address but without any mail. When I downloaded Thunderbird I was asked to sign in with an email address, but when I did that, it immediately asked whether I wanted to download emails into Thunderbird, or download them and delete them from my email address. So I'm not sure how to reach that place in the video.
I added an email account and then deleted it from Thunderbird and imported the mbox file but it showed up under Local Folders in just a single folder called All Mail, without showing the original folders of my email account...
I think you're right. I must've overlooked that when I attempted to configure Thunderbird back to an "out of the box" state. Thanks for pointing this out.
So it seems like you were able to import the downloaded emails, but the original folders weren't retained?
@@TonyTeachesTech Yes. To be fair, that is how the video is. (The video shows all the emails in the Inbox but not in folders. Perhaps you don't use folders in Gmail.) If you know how to get the folders, that would be great, but I'm also researching that.

If you're on a mac, just import the mbox from apple mail. Don't need any special tools or plugins.

I'm very upset because I did all of this and although it worked fine transferring, when I went to my gmail and deleted everything to free up space ( which was the whole reason for this, it deleted my emails in takeout too. Wth? Why? Can someone help me with this please?

This doesn't actually work though. All it does is download junk like your email inbox preferences. There aren't actual emails in the files in that folder. The other problem is, there's no way to open the files that are downloaded either. Nothing is a .eml file, and that's what it would have to be in order to be readable.
