It didn’t even have anything to do with rulers but the advice on quilt back was much needed for me!! I didn’t know I was keeping mine too tight. Thank you for doing these!! You’re amazing!!!!!!!
You do nice ruler work. One thing I would mention to newbies, is that the importance of clean wheels so they wouldn't freak when they hit a speed bump. When I started years ago, I couldn't figure out why it would happen. Love listening to you. Keep up the great work.
That is the best explanation I have ever heard and totally get it. So many teachers were talking about the drum. If you are not a drummer, every person's drum is different. The mouse under the snow is what works for me. thank you
I missed seeing this live, but I’m glad I watched it.…your very good at what you do. Thank you! I got my longarm and COVID hit. Needless to say, I’ve been flying blind and relying on UA-cam videos to learn. you provided a lot of great information, but info about the tension on the fabric when using the pounce pad is really helpful. I have a lot of stencils and I have tried to use pounce pad, but it bounced too much and half the chalk lines were gone before I got to that area, so I’d have to redo it and I was using way too much chalk. I was about to sell all those supplies until watching this..I’ll give it another try. Can I give a suggestion? I don’t know if it’s possible, but it would be awesome if you could put a camera looking down on what your doing.
Thanks Sis! Give it another go! Stencils and pounce powder are your friends! Just back off that tension a bit with your sandwich and you'll be fine. You'll have less stitch quality issues too. ;)
This is so helpful. Thank you. I don’t see recent videos unfortunately. I hope you will continue to produce content. Found your channel from your interview on Measure Twice Cut Once Podcast.
Thank you! Yes, I'm getting my groove back slowly. I lost my Mum last year and it's just been a really rough time. I"m starting to feel like I"m coming out of the fog.
Any advice for a left handed gal? I am having a terrible time controlling the stitching with my right hand guiding the long arm. Thank you for all the great instructions.
I'm left hand dominant but you could try switching hands and holding the ruler in the other hand to guide the machine with your left. If you are new to ruler work, everything is going to feel 'awkward' until you get comfortable. You got this!!
What is the small straight hand ruler you’re using? I need to look for something to start with. That looks like a good size for me. Maybe show the link for it…? Thank you!
Hey Miriam, that would be my Ditch Buddy Ruler. www.whirlsnswirlsquilting.ca/collections/longarm-rulers/products/ditch-buddy-45?_pos=2&_sid=101eb8f33&_ss=r
When will they be back in stock? Watching your videos have given me another burst of desire to learn how to do this special craft. I love it! Sooo gorgeous!
I am searching for a ruler base for my Juki Long Arm! They were supposed to be back in stock Sept 1. If any one knows where I can get one PLEASE let me know!
Hi Virgie! It’s a bathtub tray. When I pulled it up, all the bamboo ones came up first, but about a scroll half way down, the plastic one with the grippy sides appeared. Hope this helps!
Check out Renae's Steady Edge ruler. It has a straight edge, curved edge, and two "hooks" that you guide your hopping foot around appliques. I hope this helps.
Pamela, my favourite one is from Deloa Jones. It's called the appliguide. I've used it for over 10 years and it's my favourite. It also has a bevelled edge so it won't get caught up on the applique. Here's a link: www.whirlsnswirlsquilting.ca/collections/longarm-rulers/products/appliguide-classic-beveled-edge?_pos=1&_sid=17c4214d8&_ss=r
Pamela, Michael's Quilts has a video showing his ruler for doing just that. The applique rulers just help you control where the longarm is stitching, so you can "ditch" around applique.
Personally, I'm not a fan of nesting circles because I don't feel like I have full control of them (not enough to hold onto) but if they are easier for you to use and make quilting circles easier, that's awesome! We each have to find what works best for us. :)
Oh, I dislike nested circles too…I’m talking about a square with an entry cutout at the top and then a circle inside the square itself. Centrifugal force makes it easier to keep the hopping foot right on the inner edges…
The adjustable bath tray... wow...that is amazing! Thanks!

Thanks for the tutorial! Do you have a favorite brand ruler that you like the most? It is an investment and any suggestions would be awesome!
I have my own straight and circle rulers and am working on a line for curved rulers but I do like the rulers from Quilted Pineapple. :)
@@whirlsnswirlsquilting4362 - thank you! Can’t wait to see what you come out with, but in the mean time I check out Quilted Pineapple 👍🏻😊

I forget which one it's called but it's a white plastic adjustable one. I've got 4 of them, one for each machine, and I really like them. :)
Hello Tracey!! What kind of quilting machine you are using?
Hi Ellen! All of my machines are
APQS. The one in this video is a Millie.
I have a showroom in Whitby, Ontario Canada 😊

Do you always load the backing with the salvages at the top and bottom of the machine and the quilt top on the back roller?
Yep!
What?! Red Snappers! Guess you changed from Leaders.
I have both in the shop. The Red Snappers are more malleable but bulkier. The Leader Grips aren't nearly as bulky but are stiffer.
Circles are lot easier when you use a template that has an inside circle…
