After some time today I have discovered that in the passive the past participle matches the subject in gender and number. This is a thing overlooked or under explained in the congugation book and websites I use.
i was confused by that too and looking through the comments if anyone discusses that. Now that you solved my problem.

maybe because we used the verb ser instead of haber, like in french “être” and “avoir”, être matches the subject when avoir doesn’t. but i may be wrong 😊

When I first read in a book: "En el otoño se recogen las frutas como las manzanas..." I thought:
"Hm...fruit doesn't usually collect themselves. That's weird. So it must mean 'fruits like apples are collected in autumn'". And suddenly it made sense! :D
Common phrasal verbs in Spanish would be a great lesson. Perhaps idiomas also.

It’s not so much reading it that’s the issue, it’s using it correctly. Bc in English at least in regards to the passive se voice we use they. So that’s how I read it and it makes sense. Se habla español my mind says they speak Spanish. So no big deal, but for me it’s when to use the passive se. It will come in time with enough input, but it’s tricky. Awesome lesson though

Can you help settle a dispute?
In this recent NYTimes headline, "Caucus de Iowa: esto es lo que puede esperarse la noche del lunes" (Iowa Caucuses: Here's what to expect Monday night), is "se" in "esperarse" passive, or impersonal? Or neither?
And, just so I understand, if it’s the impersonal se, how would the sentence change if it used the passive se? And vice versa?

I think you are referring to Lessons 55 and 57 regarding the past participle. Could you please explain why you did not use “ido” with “construir” or “ado” with “cocinar”?
I have watched in a video that the reason se is used in passive voice sentences is because of the secret subject. For example: the sentece "se habla espanol" has actually a secret subject "la gente" so it is "La gente se habla espanol" meaning "People speak to eachother in Spanish". But what I don't understand is that if that is case why do we conjugate the verb based on the object like "Se hablan espanol y ingles" if there is a secret subject. Any explanation?

It got a little confusing after the 6.18 mark when you started to go into the second version of passive voice as i dont fully understand the conditions of when this will be used? only in shop windows and when referring to markets? its not very clear for me but thank you, you are a great teacher!

Thanks Danny. Is there any difference between this and the "verbs like gustar" which I perceive to be passive voice also? As I perceive it " verbs like gustar" must always be in passive form. Also getting my head around the sentence " the book was written by her" with word fue and the 3rd person singular preterite escrito, I am unfamilar with3rd person singular
I am unfamiliar with the use of the verb fue with other verbs that are not gerund form.
Passive verbs in English. I hade never thought about them until now "it is written, it was written, it will be written, it has been written, it had been written, it will have been written " these are the possible combinations I think.

The verb escrito is past participle and not 3rd person single pretérito.

If the past participle (ado / ido) is used in passive voice, why is it not: “Se hablado Español.” or “Se venido pedcado en el mercado.”?
Hi , Danny , hope you are doing well .I think it will be ' concinado' in place of 'concinada' in the sentence 'meal was cooked by my father' in past participle or some other rule is being followed here which I dont know .Kindly correct me.
Good question. In this case, the word is modifying a feminine word so it has to be "cocinada." It's actually called a predicative adjective in that sentence. If it were simply used as a past participle (I have cooked), it would be "cocinado."
Is this the reason why we say,
"Me duele la cabeza." ?
Also isn't it suppose to be "una casa"?
