    Awesome Bike !! My POPz had a 1975 Z1 900, he put the ATP on in the early 80's, we actually fabricated a water injection system for the bike so we would stop melting pistons. With some head work and wisco 1015cc kit and other after market parts we could pull 9.00 sec in the quarter mile (drag swing arm and tire were used) !! Every motor head loves these bikes and Harley guys might not like ja bikes, but certainly Would take a TURBO Z for a ride !!

    Nice. Thanks for sharing.
    We built a VMax using a Rayjay kit off a SX1100 ( I think that's what it was).
    I made a intake and we used a 2 barrel Weber. The carb stuck up through the fake fuel tank/airbox cover.
    Not sure how much power it made. It would spin it up at 70mph (a little unsettling to say the least).
    It was a bit of an animal.
    We finally blew it up at the track due to a faulty waste gate.
    Apparently the motor didn't like 20psi😳 last run was 11:19 at 139mph spinning to the 1000 foot mark. We lost a the rings. Combined compression was about 80% loss. Only one cylinder had 50% left. So the pass was made on just a little less than one and a half cylinders.😁
    I'll share this.👍

    First of all, you had 666 thumbs up so there's no way I was letting that evil number exist on your awesome video of an absolutely amazing motorcycle.
    I had a Suzuki GT750 in '77, it was Blue. I loved that thing. Motorcycles were my life! For anyone that's never had the experience riding motorcycles then your soul isn't fully developed!
    I'm a retired Army Tank commander, 61 years old. Unfortunately I'm now disabled and worst of all housebound. I sold my 1981 Suzuki GS1100E, it was silver. It had Wes Cooley handlebars, Kerner headers I loved that bike. It's actually difficult to watch your videos as it makes me wander off to my riding days. Life is almost not worth hanging onto much anymore. Since I've been unable to enjoy the passions that gave me great pleasure, it's difficult to find something that does any longer. Riding my bike was freedom!! I miss it so very, very much.
    Enjoy these wonderful bikes,I'm most definitely envious but wish you good luck and health, my friend.

    Similar pipe to a Blake Enterprises pipe IIRC. I use a custom exhaust but everything else is "tc". Added a powerjet to the carb and a separate system that meters fuel straight down the throat and sleeved out to 1075cc. Even with 4 bent exhaust valves on methanol it dynoed at 175rwhp.

    It's a draw through or a wet fuel system. The carburetor never gets pressurized as he states because it's Upstream from the compressor. It's called a wet system because the turbocharger is compressing gasoline and Air.

    • @t.s.racing
      @t.s.racing 4 роки тому

      @Kathleen Shaw Kathleen, commendable, but not entirely correct. The early draw thru RayJay turbochargers did NOT have the carbon seal. This can be witnessed by the cloud of smoke on deceleration and the fairly high consumption of engine oil. In FACT the original Z1R TC, had the oil return plumbed into the oil filler cap which proved to be troublesome everytime you needed to add oil. Over 40 years later, this old timer is still building these draw thru, carburetored turbo motorcycles. I'm designing and building my 1981 SUZUKI GS Drag bike, draw thru turbo as we speak. Again, I commend you on your Engineering expertise, but it doesn't apply in this case. Thank you, SARGE.

    Kwaka 9 Tuned correctly 75 hp easy with a decent pipe and ignition. Considerable frame twisting going on, with 120 hp mmm I wouldn't be surprised if the chain came off. Saw one of these years ago but it had an CD Stromberg on it. It was on methanol as well. Love the old school wet turbos but you could never really put the boost to them 12 pounds was the end of the world.

    • @robertcates4066
      @robertcates4066 4 роки тому

      It is a draw thru design, it pulls from the bottom of the carb instead of pushing thru, like you see now! Current turbo setups are pretty all blow thru, because most engine are fuel injected, so all turbo has to do is push/blow thru the throttle body, back when this setup was popular very few companies used the blow thru design, because you would pressurized the carb, the carbs all had to many places where pressurized air/ boost would go out the carb, throttle shafts, air vents, they weren't as efficient back then, read up on them, there are some neat books out there( I have one called, TURBOCHARGERS by Hugh Macciness, awesome book. There is another book called Supercargers, Fuel Inections, Turbo, I don't remember who it is by , I can't find it in my books.

      Frames need a little flex (though Kawas were a bit too good at it). A decent set of rear shocks with properly working bushes will do the best job.

    Nice bike. I recently picked up an '82 GS1100E with a Mr. Turbo kit, Don Vesco built and raced at Bonneville. Parked in '96 after 184MPH pass, all complete and will be perfect as there is no damage to anything. The bike has a huge S&S Super B that won't allow side cover mounting, plus the original Keihin which by all accounts seems to be a bad choice. So I may go with a HSR42. I'm wondering how it mated up to the turbo, special flange needed?

    • @cramersclassics
      @cramersclassics  4 роки тому

      Sounds like a really cool bike Tom. In my video near the end there is a close-up shot of the rubber carb boot we used with the HSR42. I think we got the carb and boot from Sudco. I discuss the jetting changes in the video too.
      You may need to lower the compression as I bet Mr. Vesco was running lots. We used stock low compression pistons. Otherwise you will likely have detonation with the turbo. Finally, make sure the wastegate is working well and start around 7 lbs. boost. We replaced original wastegate with a new one from Turbokits.com , set for 7 PSI.
      Cheers, Kirb

    The wastegate is made of, bottom Aluminium and top is steel. You need to keep the piston in the wastegate lubricated somehow (copperslip) otherwise it will stick and overboost the engine without warning. The wastegate sticks due to condensation build up after engine shutdown. The carb(bendix originally) was always a problem. Change the carb to the one used on the old MR Turbo kits, I think it was a mikuni(you might have already done that). The log header pipe needs changing as you will never get the correct mixture across all the ports even. The crankshaft should be welded at the pressed points. A piano hinge or small hindge that flaps to and frow should be fitted into the sump pan to stop the oil going towards the back of the sump under acceleration. If the oil is allowed to go to the back of the sump it will not be picked up by the oil pump. That will cause the bearing yo cease on the rayjay turbo. Adanvce the stock cams by 10 degrees and the acceleration will be better all round.

    • @cramersclassics
      @cramersclassics  3 роки тому +1

      Great ideas! We have already done some of them. The carb is Mikuni and the wastegate was replaced (TurboKits.com) after the video to tame the boost to about 7.5 PSI. The turbo was rebuilt with new bearings and a KZ1000 Police oil pump fitted for more volume helps the turbo keep cool. I also change the crankcase breather to a later version with dual baffles. Runs even better now.
