This moment is pure magic. Unreal has such a specific tone of adventure, mystery and wonder, and the pacing is perfect throughout the whole game. I don't even remember what you actually go to the Haven for, but that moment when you step onto the balcony, seeing the floating islands with this music, is forever etched into my memory.
You are just cruising forward in hopes to find a ship to escape... and when you get to the Sunspire, the giant spire that you see almost every level in the distance, the only way forward is to take an elevator, to the sky... awesome stuff
@@vicentecortes2953 you're right! I actually replayed it again the other week and I hadn't even noticed before just how early the Sunspire is foreshadowed. It's like the Citadel in HL2 except it was earlier than even HL1. Honestly I feel like Unreal does a lot of those famous set piece moments just as good or better than Half-Life, and with less dialogue and scripted events, just letting the sound, visuals and level design speak for themselves.

I was pleasantly surprised and even shocked at how familiar a lot of things in Unreal felt, yet also how it was unlike anything I've experienced in a game before. The game peaked for me around Sunspire/Surfacing/Na Pali Haven/Bluff Eversmoking/ISV-Kran.
At least you are not forced to fight Like on planet Litau from Asterix universe, You are Free to run away from danger, hide with the Nali in underworlds from the Skaarj. If Na Pali is called Hell by 849, imagine the name of Litau because you are conscripted to fight for sport

I played the original in multiplayer a lot when it came out. Came back to play the single player like a decade plus later, and despite the mediocre low poly graphics I was pretty taken aback by that part. I was like, damn. This is a really cool place
Went back recently to play the original Unreal. Strongly recommend playing on the harder difficulties and increasing game speed to ~1.25 for one intense FPS experience. Super atmospheric as it always was. Great fucking game.
It's amazing how this game holds up even today. Even at low poly, the brilliant design can carry it into the future. And the sky box of this (and the next) level is just out of this world.
Even when upscaled to 1920x1080 the game still looks beautiful. With the HD textures, it's even more so. The ending even tho there is no spoken dialog it just makes me cry. Good times 🥲
First two Krall you enconter are actually non-hostile to the player unless you approach them with shock rifle or rocket laucnher. Future lore suggests that these were skaarj-made weapons were most frequently stolen from military and security by nali and then used in guerilla warfare. Of course Krall being trapped on a sky island with more and more annoyed and desperate nali folk must've been very familiar with these.
Actually this is a plot point in Na Pali Haven Redux, a prequel to the Seven Bullets mod. Set 12 years after the events of Unreal it has you going through the sky city once again in order to activate a Skaarj EMP device, but this time around it isn't peaceful anymore. Once Nali learned how to use firearms (or "the tools of great pain", as they call them) they revolted against their oppressors and the once tranquil haven is now a full-blown warzone.
I still get goosebumps from the songs in this game, especially ones like Dusk Horizon, Dig, and this one. It just hits your ears in all the right ways. It's well, unreal!
The state of utter amazement this game put my kid's brain into.. And no nostalgia per se, it is still every bit as awesome today, which is an incredible feat.
For those of you who haven't experienced yet, the guy who made GMDX for Deus Ex has released a mod for Unreal, "Unreal: Evolution" which brings it up to speed quite a large deal. Suss it out, it's brand new and I love it. God, I'd love to have Loudspeakerz' tracks on it!

Games of this era had the attitude: "it's going to be so great if it's fully realized - for now, delve into the atmosphere". Later games, especially now, have the attitude: "Nah, it's not that great, but just deal with it, look here: shiny, and reputation".
Man, I wish we could get a new Unreal or UT game in the classic style of the first two. UT2K4 was great, but something about the first two is timeless... I really didn't like the style of the new one they killed either tbh
Apart from Unreal being a great game, I always wished for an RPG set on Na Pali. And the music in the first Unreal is responsible for this to about one third (the other two being the story and the feeling, albeit false, of openness of the world).

This game is a guilty pleasure, still remember when my dad got the CD and let me play on the pc, i spent hours in this game, loved every moment of it
