I landed a 1.33m mulloway off Stockton beach on Australia Day roughly 7-8 years ago. It had a tag in it. Unfortunately the fish didn’t survive it was spent. Turns out the fish was tagged 6 months earlier in the George’s river measuring 1.30m by Chris Cleaver.
I reached out to a number of fishermen in the industry years ago when there was an issue with a youth on Sydney piers was kicking bird life - and Chris was one on the only ones that got back too me - he didn’t know me at all - he gave me total piece of mind that the authorities were onto it and that the guy would be caught.!! an absolute legend of a bloke and fisherman exactly what we need for the industry.!!
Really enjoyed that one Starlo very interesting. I know an old bloke who used to scuba dive off the Mandora jetty in the late 60s early 70s. He said you would be amazed at the amount of big jewfish he seen but they wouldn’t take baits. I have heard reports of jewfish caught off the beach out there where I sometimes go to fish. I have never caught one off the beach but they seem to be quite abundant in the harbour still. Hopefully I get one off the beaches here soon one day 😊🐠
Hey Starlo, that was a very interesting listen. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. Don’t mind me asking but Chris’s voice sounds a lot like this bloke that works for Shimano Australia. I often call them when my reels are In Shimano service & his voice sounds very familiar. Is that the same Chris?
Glad you enjoyed it. Chris did indeed work for Shimano for quite a few years, but left a few years back to join NSW Fisheries, so you wouldn't have spoken with him in more recent times, but certainly four or five years ago it could easily have been him.
I have arguments/discussions with pro fishermen here in SA about mulloway in the coorong system and how I believe it’s not sustainable Mulloway in the coorong need to be 46cm to keep and scientifically we know that at 46cm a Mulloway is not mature enough to breed yet outside the Coorong mulloway need to be 83cm, I personally believe that Mulloway should be 83cm size limit state wide, that would allow all fish to have at least a chance to breed, the coorong is also a nursery for those juveniles and targeting fish in their nursery habitats just doesn’t sit right to me. Talking to a lot of the older guys Mulloway stocks here in SA are nothing compared to what they once where and a lot of the places they use to catch big fish haven’t seen mulloway caught in years, as a relatively young (28) fisherman it really is a shame and something does need to be done. We have had a Snapper ban for 6 years because of over fishing and I would hate to see Mulloway in the same situation
Fish having personalities, not from having personalities not from a human point of view but behavioral characteristics that that identify that species … then asks, how would you "personify" …lol, duh.
Best in the business Cleaver is.a lot of respect for him 👍🎣🐟
Agreed. 👍

Thanks for that great input. I agree.
Hi guys thank you ,the jew fish stocks are definitely declining in sixties and seventies, we frequently could good size Jewish and we released a lot ,
Agreed. They're both depleted and size over-fished these days, unfortunately. Not good.

Lost me a bit there, but thanks for your input. 😉
