At barely 16 years of age, Susan placed her baby boy for adoption. She later on adopted two children from Korea. After decades had passed, she was able to be reunited with her first child.
I hope her story as a first mother and an adoptive mother is something that is not only informative but moving, as well. Her story is the reason why I am choosing to try and touch on all faces of adoption, in the hopes that it is helpful to others, whether they are going through something similar, or for people to gain insight into that of the adoptee, the adoptive parents and the first mothers. She is my mother, the mother who raised me. And she is one of the strongest women I know.
Thank you for watching, and hope you will spread the word and share with others.

Just realize that even though she says "have an open adoption" it doesn't always work out that way! A lot of hopeful adopted parents will offer you the sun and moon to get that child, but then they can change their mind that quick! They can close an adoption at any moment with no consequences!

What a story... I love the end share, Susan. So honest and heart-wrenching. I have a friend near retirement age who still carries the pain of her emotional trauma from closed adoption. She wants to know her birth parents, yet fears it too. It is so amazing your experience on both sides, having adopted children into your family after giving your first son to other parents to raise. I think you are an amazing, kind, and loving woman. And strong and courageous. God bless you!

Your videos on adoption have been one of the most helpful things to me as I became an foster parent during this last year. Thank you for sharing these stories. So often, birth family and adoptee stories are left out of the adoption narrative. Thank you for what you are doing to show all sides of adoption. You have made me a better parent as we prepare to adopt our son. Thank you.

Lea Phillips thank you so much:). That means so much to me that the videos I’m making are helping others. One of the main reasons I work so hard on this passion project of mine. I hope you’ve checked out the newest series I’m working on called Beyond Biological:).

I wish you were my mother.. my biological mother said she was never going to come find me. After 53 year of being adopted , I had found my mother, and she still keeps me a secret.. I had soo much love to offer to my mother, but because of Shame, she will never be able to accept as her son.I have been rejected for a second time, however I do have a great relationship with my new found Father, who is one great man . I love him much..

Filmmaker speaking, also adopted daughter of Susan. Thank you for sharing about your story. I'm so sorry your mother has not been able to let go of the shame she's held onto for so long that she is unable to accept your love. I am glad you have been able to form a relationship with your father. I hope one day your mother will be able to move past the secrecy and meet you half way.

I am a birth mother too and I agree with your opinion that adoption hurts the child and the birth parents. I have found my son and we have a relationship that is good but he also has been unable to tell his adopted mom or sister about me because he feels it would bring his adopted mom pain. I think adoption is often necessary but it is unnatural...I was also forced by my father to give up my baby at 19 years old. His attitude was harsh and I have never really gotten over it completely. It's amazing how closely your story and mine are. God bless you and your family.

You are a strong inspiring woman. The fact that you in turn adopted your own children is so beautiful. Your advice is perfect and I know it's going to touch lives. Thank you for sharing.

Beautiful bravery. I hope she feels no.guilt ..she was just a baby herself and her parents were not careful with her. ♡ I'm not sure she really had a choice.
It seems that no one wins because as a parent you don't want your child to.hurt...so when /if i adopt my heart will break with theirs and that is not a win for me . But i see how i will blessed by loving them ..that's a win

What an amazing woman and mini documentary. It was so sad to see her still blaming herself at least partly for getting date raped but her courage and big heart were true testaments to her character. Such a sad story in a lot of ways but her perspective as a mother who gave up her child and as a parent who adopted children was interesting and valuable. Thanks for making this.

Thank you so much. My mom is the reason why I document and share stories from each perspective in the adoption constellation. I believe understanding and empathy is very powerful and can create change.

Susan, thank you for sharing your story. I was not adopted but somehow felt that way all of my life. I came from a family of alcoholics. Not only were my parents alcoholics but the entire extended family had drug and alcohol difficulties. I am the complete opposite and do not live my life or share any of that trauma with my own grown children. Perhaps I will never share that experience with them. I never want them to feel any of the emotions that I had felt by knowing what I had to go through to just survive. I have great compassion for you. The compassion that you have for adoption is something that worked for you. I'm happy that your family is all coming together to be whole again. Prayers for you.
