Great video. I just saw one of these today which lead me here. This explained everything I needed to know. I am currently working up my own plans for this. If I ever get around to it then I will let you know.
Question no one has touched on that I've seen is firing it. Do you fill the tubes with propane then stop releasing the gas, then ignite it? Or do you continuously release the gas even after ignition?
great question... So when I fire the gun you will first hear me fill the gun with gas (I first press the trigger for about 5 seconds I think to release the gas) then I press the trigger all the way down which ignites the gas. You must continue to hold the trigger down until it fires or otherwise the gas will not be pushed all the way out. You will find that if you don't do this the flame will stop moving through the tube. I hope this explains it. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for the question!
My take on the plasma popper went from a fun garage science project to me spending a year perfecting it to the point where it sounds like a 12-gauge shotgun and it folds cans in half.
My question is can you use the ignition in the chamber to make an actual cannon? Like black powder and once it ignites the pressure build up and the pressure created enought to make something go really far fast lol
Would you please be so kind in sharing with us the magic formula? I haven't tried to build one yet but I would like to make one where the sound is as loud as possible. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Cool, but can you try launching some sort of projectile from it? Maybe some sort of thick plastic ball that loosely fits in the end of the "barrel?" It'd obviously have to be something lightweight and capable of standing up to the heat. You'd want to maybe test this with a long piece of tubing running to the gun first in case the projectile ends up too snug, or caught, or something, and causes an explosion though.
I took away the barrel on mine and loosely fit a cheap plastic water bottle on the end of the tube. I gave it like 6 seconds of gas before ignition and i got the bottle to fly about 50 feet max. I'm currently working on perfecting it.
Do you have to use two sizes of tubing, or could you stay with the same size for the whole length? If so would it matter if you used the smaller size throughout, or does it need to be the bigger size?
I can't give an absolute answer on that because I've only built the one gun. I would imagine either would work fine. you can always test the tubing before you make the gun by connecting your gas to the tubing and trying it out. With the smaller tubing the plasma ball will move faster through the tubing.
is there something else we can use instead of the bernzomatic trigger start torch? it's quite expensive, I saw other start torches but I don't know if they are suitable for this purpose
Hi PhotoSlash! I wish I had an answer for that :( I really don't. I can't think of anything offhand that can do the same thing. Maybe one of the viewers will comment if they have an idea. I totally agree though, it does take a bit of money to get this thing put together, but it is pretty cool :). Thanks for watching, and PLEASE.... if you find an answer I would love for you to let me know what you did :)
@@PhotoSlash hey man. I know I'm late to the party, but if you didn't want to use the autoigniting torch you could use some other gas regulating valve and then to ignite you could use a piezo electric sparker like a barbecue lighter has. It's basically the same thing as what is in those name brand push button torches. The really nice thing about the auto torch is it's all in one trigger pull, whereas with a barbecue lighter you would have one button to light and some other valve to actuate the gas. If you wanted to go this route you'd be best using mapp gas because it would be easier to start with the weaker spark. Source: used a hacked lighter for a whoosh bottle demonstration in high school. I am not responsible for any injury or damages caused while employing this advice. I'm just a guy on the interwebs.
@@PhotoSlash Also there's a kind of a new trend of eletric lighters that look like zippos, but use high voltage electric arcs instead of chemical flames, they call them plasma lighters or arc lighters. Probably overkill for a low budget simple ignition system, but they're mad cool and I'd love to break the warranty on one for science.
Hello, tell me more about the release of gas. Do you turn on the gas and let it build up before you hit the igniter? The bottle igniters that I am familiar with need the gas to be turned on before you press the trigger. Could you please tell me a bit more about how this gun is kept from exploding. Thank you.
When I press the trigger (slightly- not all the way) on the gas tank the gas is released. When I press the trigger all the way down is when the gas is ignited with a spark. You will have to purchase the trigger mechanism, you can see the trigger that I used here: Bernzomatic Trigger start torch amzn.to/2fYRFuQ As far as the exploding part... I guess you might say it is a controlled explosion. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment

Actually a skil/l saw is referring to a circular saw. Though Skil is a band, if you were on a construction job site referring to a jigsaw as a skil/l saw you would annoy and confuse everyone because people in the trades refer to circular saws as both skill saws and circular saw. my 2 cents.
the only real flaw with that plasma rifle is all of the kinks that you have in your hose, which creates a somewhat high risk of rupturing while firing your weapon. I'd recommend remaking this weapon so that you don't have any kinks or flattened sections of vinyl tubing.
There are two spots where my tube flattens out a little but I don't have any kinks. I've fired it a ton of times at this point and have never had any issues with the speed of the flame going through the tube. Because of the way the gun works, if there were a kink then the flame wouldn't travel at all. The gas behind the flame is what pushes the flame through the tube, so it would be easy to immediately see if there were a problem.
First question: Depends on the gun. I've seen some that just whoosh quietly, and then I've seen ones like mine that can literally blow out your eardrums if you don't wear proper protection. It mainly depends on how big the barrel is and how much gas you give it before igniting. Second question: Yes. As long as it is fitted over the torch correctly, it works exactly the same way. I turned this same sort of mechanism into a rocket launcher, and I used rigid PVC tubing and it worked fine. Hope I answered all of your questions :)
@@ethandoades Need more of a noise maker and less of a visual fun show. Don't get me wrong, I dig the spinning blue tube fun show. Mine will be for effect in a training environment.
the end of the video shows me operating the gun. His is on a 2x4 and mine looks more like a rifle. He has a cool channel though :)
Of course it's not Stanley. Have you ever heard of a "misnomer"? "a word that suggests a meaning that is known to be wrong." Another definition for misnomer is this..."Misnomers often arise because something was named long before its correct nature was known, or because the nature of an earlier form is no longer the norm." If you watch the video I tell you that I did not create this, there were people before me that gave it the name "Plasma gun", so I just kept the name and made my own design. Think of it like this... Tin Foil is not made of tin, it is made of aluminum, or the fact that people call the stuff in pencils "lead" when it is actually graphite and clay. Thanks for watching.
Perhaps you are right. It is in no way meant to deceive, it is just meant to make something easier to find because that is the word/name people first think of based on the originators of the project. Kind of like electricity, as you may already know most are taught that electricity flows positive to negative... and it is still taught this way (because in electronics it doesn't matter too much), but in physics they teach that it flows from negative to positive. Kind of interesting that even though something has been proven wrong scientifically we still teach what we first thought was correct. Maybe I'm going off on a tangent but I thought it went along with our conversation. :) Thanks for your thoughts! ps... I'll put "propane pop gun" in the description :)
