- The modern Sherlock Holmes is a digital investigator, tracking down cyber crime across the internet. The most challenging part of fighting cyber crime is the elusive nature of threat actors operating anonymously from behind a computer. Not everyone’s sitting around watching though, since cyber investigators are always lurking in the background, piecing together the clues.
In his book, ‘Hunting Cyber Criminals: A Hacker’s Guide to Online Intelligence Gathering Tools and Techniques’ author Vinny Troia shares his tradecraft for fighting cyber crime. The book covers everything from OSINT automation, criminal psychology to advanced investigative techniques.
Vinny uses personal experiences from investigations, such as the 2-year process of unmasking an infamous cyber crime group, The Dark Overlord. TDO was the hacking group responsible for leaking episodes from Netflix, targeting schools with death threats, and extorting dozens of small businesses during their reign of terror. Vinny’s efforts resulted in the unmasking of TDO’s core members, one who was eventually extradited to the United States to face charges.
Three main takeaways / three key themes for a cyber crime investigation:
1. Vanity trumps OPSEC - For many criminal hackers, notoriety is just as important as financial gain. The desire for attention can create OPSEC flaws for these actors.
2. Have deep access to historical data - Data and the Internet is ever-changing. Having insights into how things have changed is critical for tracing the origins of an incident.
3. Never rely on a single technique - No matter how rudimentary or outdated a tool may be, it never hurts to throw everything you’ve got when it comes to researching an identifier such as a username, number, or picture.

Who’s going to win in the end, cyber criminals or cyber investigators?
i think its a close call. Everytime a new system/innovation is made in the computer science/IT/ICT field is made, it gets a lotta attention from both parties. So, instead of a competition, i think its more of an infinite race. Love your content btw :).
Also, I was thinking of taking up a profession in cybersecurity, could u pls give some advice. Im 16, going to highschool and i love STEM!

In brazil the government don't arrest you if you hack someone, they only arrest you if you stole some money, but the thing is, is really hard to comprove and when you go to analyse is really hard to solve the crime, that's why I thing cyber security business will grow a lot in the country i think

Powershell is huge for cyber security, whether you're offensive or defense, since most computers are Windows.
Is there a significant difference between ethical hacking and digital forensics? If not then how come they are two diffefent certf(forgot the name of the organisation that gives the CEH cert) but seems to me they both do the same thing
Digital forensics is about extracting information and intel from disk, memory, network traffic, etc. More defensive-oriented. You might use some techniques doing pentesting but they're quite different.

2 years is plenty of time to start building a solid baseline.
It's cliche to say download Kali Linux, so instead I recommend you go through the different tools installed on it and read/learn what they do.
Try configuring a virtual machine with the Metasploitable distribution on it to practice metasploit.
TryHackMe and HackTheBox are two awesome lab resources you can start playing with now.
A lot of the learning comes from tinkering around and puzzle solving.

Digital Security is an unofficial field you should take a look at. Haven't seen a great course anywhere, but this covers everything from OPSEC, Privacy, Passwords/Authentication, Social Engineering, etc.
Great way to start to learn is to become/think like the attacker first. Red team yourself and your family.
