The side step defense side kick your training him to do is wrong. You need to have the shield on a 45° angle facing him because that's where your target "should" be. As opposed to throwing an off balance side kick off of your center line which will in return have no power, have no point, and it's slower.
Why are you stepping that back foot up though? Slide prevents the jam way better. That telegraph will get you backfisted/jabbed every time in high level black belt sparring
