To anyone wondering, a Holmgang was a ritual in Iceland primarily aimed at resolving questions of honor. If a person dared practice scolding against another (proclaiming the other was inferior in every way, a villain, and consequently dishonourable), the other's only choice to avoid being called a Nithing (and hence, outlawed and treated like an animal that should be hunted) would be to challenge the person to Holmgang. In the combat, if the insulted person won, the other would be declared even more dishonourable. If the insulted lost, his family would be owed half a weregild for the loss. Other forms of profit could be woven into it, such as the winner keeping the loser's entire possessions. The song talks just about that, being very careful who one challenges or offends, because that person might just be your end.
No it is not Icelandic primarily. Read Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks. It has the most Epic Holmgang. It is about the times before Island was know. Including cursed swords, Berserkers and fighting over girls! The Holmgang at Samsö between the Hird captain of the Swedish King Hjalmar and the Berserker Angantyr.

Well, it is in english and americans don't really have that strong of a connection to swords. That's probably what he thought for the lyrics. Holmgång is viewed in sweidsh culture as a brutal all or nothing meele to the death and a combat knife would be the most fitting weapon for such a battle in modern times.
