    If people are having a difficult time removing control arm bolts due to the strut being in the way, try this:
    1) Disconnect the sway bar end link (connected to strut)
    2) Remove top (3) nuts that hold top of strut on
    3) Use a pry bar to pry strut down just enough to move it out of the way.
    Good luck.

    I think the Hemi spring is a bit wider because we had to remove the strut to get the bolts out with the tabs on the end. Otherwise the spring was in the way. There was no other option. The V6 spring might be more narrow so that’s why it works in this video without having to remove the strut.

    Excellent video, I love all the 1A-Auto videos and am very thankful. I just replaced the upper control arms on my 2005 Dodge Magnum 3.5L and there are three things I learned that I feel would be helpful for someone looking to perform this on an LX platform car (300, Charger, Magnum) after watching this vid:
    1. As mentioned in other comments, the springs in the strut assembly could likely be in the way for removing the bolts holding the control arm into the chassis (4min 10sec). This requires at least partially removing the strut assembly. It was kinda annoying realizing it was necessary but not difficult. There's another great 1A-Auto video for replacing the strut assembly.
    2. At 3min 4sec you can see the guy using a ratchet with an adjustable handle to remove the passenger/rearward nut on the strut tower. I'm willing to say that such a ratchet is required. Maybe it's possible to get a combo wrench on that nut or something else but I don't think there's enough room for it to be practical. I also do not feel confident that I got 55 ft-lbs of torque on that nut when tightening with my adjustable-handle ratchet. Yes, you could remove a bunch of stuff as said in the video to more easily access this nut, but it looks like a lot of stuff to remove to me.
    3. This last one was a big deal for me and almost a dead-end. No amount of hammering dislodged either driver or passenger upper ball joint for me. Not even close. I used plenty of penetrating oil, swung hard, 4lb hammer, lots of different angles. No dice. If you're replacing your upper control arms, it's likely that they've been on there a while and this isn't going to be enough. It's also very easy to accidentally hit the threading, so, using a hammer to not destroy the ball-joint's boot is kind of a moot point. On the driver side, a pickle fork worked. On the passenger side, the pickle fork actually started to take the ball out of the socket. If you're replacing your upper control arms, it's likely because one of the upper ball joints is failing, like this one was. There was too much play in the joint and consequently it was too easy for the ball to come out of the socket. I ultimately used this: shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/autocraft-ball-joint-separator-ac3430/10449277-P?searchTerm=ball+joint+seperator Maybe A1-Auto sells one. I would say they should put an annotation in the vid with a link if they do. It worked perfectly. I laughed out loud when I saw how easily it worked. It would have saved me a TON of time and worrying. (I guess heat could be used as well to aid joint separation but I feel that's beyond the scope of this level of tutorial)
    Again, great video. I love that it's concise and not trying to be entertaining. Very helpful.

    The video was very helpful but you're lucky if it's this easy on your car 😂 Check to see if the bolts holding in the control arm will clear the suspension coil first then decide if you still want to do this yourself. They didn't on mine and I had to take the whole strut assembly out. Still got it done and saved some money, just a warning. And if it's an 05 and hasn't been taken out before, make sure you have a blow torch and a ball joint fork!!

    Was almost as easy as you said it was, Until we hit the captured bolts. Because of the struts coil being in the way we couldn't move the bolts far enough to remove them and we didn't have the appropriate tools or know how to remove the strut so had to bring it to resemble and take it to a shop anyways. Close but no cake.

    • @jaybeezGUD

      Justin removing the strut just disconnect the the 3 nuts up top and if need be the 2 bolts running through the a-frame at the bottom

    • @ericl8136
      @ericl8136 6 років тому

      I ran into this myself. The solution is to unbolt the 3 nuts on the top of the strut under the plastic cap. This give enough room to get them out.

    I didn't watch the video all the way and tightened the nuts and bolts first. Will that cause it to make a squeaking noise? Did i ruin the part? Or should I just redo it?

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  6 років тому

      +Tony Dean It could make a squeaking noise. The suspension should have been loaded with the weight of the vehicle on the ground. You may want to inspect the bushings to see if they were damages, if not you may want to try loosening the control arms, putting the weight of the vehicle on the suspension, and then tightening the control arm bolts. Hope this helps you out.
