We hope everyone enjoys the video and has fun out in their garden doing some pruning! List of the plants is in the description with their zone information. Rosy also recently launched an online Perennial Propagation Course and there is a link with more info in the description too :)
Very timely "tough love" video for us at this point in the season. A seminar once taught us to "know the message you want to give your (any?) plant." Thks.again,Rosie 🌞
What an informative and clearly demonstrated lesson, Rosie. You have an excellent quality of explaining the “whys” behind what is done. I just did some pruning of a lot of end of season perennials I picked up for a song and am feeding during planting. For tall phlox in the ground already, is there any point in cutting it back? It’s splendidly floriferous and tends to stay so through the end of fall when I cut back to the ground. I did pick up some 2-feet tall mostly spent phlox at the end of season sale. If I go back to buds with it, will it reflower this season?
I was just looking up how to prune hardy geraniums as I have several new plants 😂. I overwintered a black and blue salvia. One of the branches broke off and it got several new branches. I am trying to teach my hubs is that trimming back is good in gardening!
Very useful video, I am often reluctant to cut back because of the flowers but now I will be doing it. I have several salvia including Hot Lips red and the amethyst which is one of my favourite. I did cut them back in the spring and they have grown like mad so will need to be done again. Thank you.
Brilliant and inspirational. My husband overhearing this asked 'who us the plant butcher?' I'm just off out into the garden to deal with the polemonium and geranium! 😂
Great video, thanks for the expert advice. My nepeta ‘Walkers low’ has flowered for weeks (bees adore it), but can I trim off the old flowers now or should I be more drastic? Thanks
Great video Rosy and perfectly timed for me. Do you know if we can do this trimming with a persicaria? Its flowered so well for the last few weeks but now it’s gone over. I wondered if I could apply this type of cutting back to it. Thanks
Awesome, I’m ready to go, but I’m hesitant which plants are eligible. Which ones of these can be cut back hard? Monarda Veronica Geum Leucanthemum Gaura Coreopsis Verbena Thank you so much!
Sorry, another question, I have a Salvia Red Bumble which has gotten quite woody as I havnt pruned it at all!! I know 🙄! Can I cut into the brown stems at all?
I have a verbena growing in my garden, last autum I cut it back to about 7 inches to see what happens. Now this spring it only shot up a few skinny shoots from one of the old canes.. what should I do? Cut it back to the ground or just leave it for this season.
Love your videos! So educational for a novice like me! Could I be doing this method with garden phlox? Very tall, very susceptible to flopping but prolific blooms so I just leave them and try to prop them up...
I've had issues with my salvias neon all floppy and mad. I wasn't sure if this time of year is now OK to cut back. Would you have a video available for salvias?
I just love your videos. I have a Salvia Coccinea that is huge in a 10 inch pot soon to be potted up. The salvia is still flowering like crazy, lots of buds and it's nice and full. It is in the high 90s with heat index 105 etc. Do you think I should cut the salvia back? If so how severe? Wait until the fliwering is done? I have been dead heading.
Rosie thank you for your informative videos - they are really helpful but could I ask that we have more close ups please? Especially when you are talking about seed heads / pruning etc Many thanks ☺️
Rosy is trying on this front, she is filming everything herself and is not a professional videographer, plants are not the easiest to film close up she finds but she does what she can
I find Rosie does a pretty good job at showing the plants. You know if you are watching on a tablet you can magnify the image by using two fingers on the screen and sliding them apart. I use that feature every time I want a better view of a detail. You can also watch UA-cam on a smart TV. The bigger the screen the bigger the image.
Just what I needed thank you! Am I safe to do this on any plant that isn't woody stemmed? I'd love more general rules to follow, I'm a new gardener and struggle looking up every plants specifically, forgetting, looking up again etc
Take a third off. Water well. Summer has hit and suddenly so trimming actually relieves the roots from supporting as much foliage. It will rebound quickly but keep watered.
Sorry though I had said a time and it is seasonal so it is summer pruning. In the southern hemisphere that will be December. I work on seasons to make it easier for all countries and conditions. Hope this explains why I don’t use months.
@@rosyhardy18You're right Rosie that it's seasonal but people will come across this video throughout the year, so saying "do it now" doesn't tell us when 'now'' is. I think this is what the questioner was saying. Great videos.

Can I cut back my columbine that looks awful because of leaf minor or will it just go into dormancy early or die if I do
Thanks Rosie. I've been swithering about cutting back a floppy hardy geranium so now I know what to do with it.
I was holding my breath as you were pruning the Salvia as I did mine yesterday. Luckily I appear to have done mine correctly, a great relief!

Great demo of proper pruning, thank you. I need to do this more.
Good advice and demonstration. Thank you, Rosy.

Great Rosie will be getting on with that 💕
Your knowledge is mind blowing. Thanks for sharing. X
Nice to know and some times you have to be brutal to some perennials so they look better. Thanks!

Thank you Rosy, I’m enjoying the propagation masterclass of yours 💋🌱 thank you Kim x
Great tips thankyou! 😊❤
Great video, thanks for the expert advice.
My nepeta ‘Walkers low’ has flowered for weeks (bees adore it), but can I trim off the old flowers now or should I be more drastic? Thanks
I would take old flowers down to the base. When the whole plant and flowers start to look jaded then that’s the time to be more drastic

Yes this will certainly help. Remember water and liquid feed as well

Chelsea chop with phlox helps, this is done late May. But also in the season you can reduce some stems to act as support for the flowering stems
@@rosyhardy18 thank you!

There is a Salvia video in the older list. But certainly a haircut to tidy up is a good idea

Deadheading is good. Any wayward branches can be pruned back
Hello Rosie, can you tell me what are those lightweight pruners that you are using in the video please.
Many thanks..
@@paulmccarthy7512 I use ARS fruit pruners

@@h0llytr0n best way to learn I find is to write it down. But most rebooking perennials can have a tidy up prune in the growing season

That should be reblooming

Hi Rosy, my Solidago canadensis, 'Golden Baby' a dwarf variety. It’s already having buds early. I can prune them as well? Thank you .
If it has flower bud now leave it until after flowering

Hello depends on the material you are cutting off. If it has flower no. But if small shoots yes probably
