    To the 20 people who gave this a thumbs down you need to take good long hard look at yourselves. This is great. I am a self taught piano piano player and not a very good one. The only way you improve is by watching people who are better than you. I keep improving by watching videos like this!!!

    Excellent presentation, Goat! I know what you mean about changing patches. My Kronos 61 is my only board and I love it, but I'm thinking of adding a cheap extra controller to avoid having to hit buttons at the right time! Absolutely agree about EVH. I figured out "Right Now" on my own a few months ago and it too, is UNRELENTING, but Ed really created beautiful compositional structure on many keyboard AND guitar songs...Just subscribed!

    Hi thanks for this video. I know it's from 2015 but I just got a Yamaha MX49 keyboard. Would you have any suggestions how to match the sounds for this song? I'm assuming its layered where there is a piano and a synth as well. Thanks!!

    • @goatghost
      @goatghost  6 років тому

      Hey Rob...it looks like the Yamaha MX49 has 1000 built-in sounds, so I would imagine that there might be a basic "sawtooth" synth sound in there. It's really nothing too fancy...just two sawtooth waves which have been slightly detuned (not sure if the MX49 has much programmability for the built-in sounds). On top of the basic sawtooth sound, you would simply layer a piano sound and adjust the levels between the synth and the piano. I'd say 60% synth and 40% piano would be the right proportion. If you can create two patches (programs?), you could have one with just the synth sound for the intro. Then, before the drums come in, you can switch to the layered synth/piano patch, for the rest of the song.

    Great! There's just one point that I can't understand: why do you play the JV-90 in the intro? why don't you directly play the Fantom as you do in the rest of the song? Thanks in advance

    • @goatghost
      @goatghost  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Massimo! Thanks for your comments. While I appear to be "playing" the JV-90 in the intro, I am really just using it as a controller...sending out MIDI note information on a single channel to the Fantom (which is actually producing the sound). On the Fantom, I have assigned that single channel to produce the "synth" sound. When I switch to the Fantom, I have programmed the synth sound to be layered with a piano sound. Thus, both the synth and piano sounds are coming out of the Fantom after the intro. :-)

    Higher and higher leave it all behind
    Run, run, run away
    Like a train running off the tracks
    Got the truth being left behind
    Fall between the cracks
    Standing on broken dreams

      Thanks, Jacobo! Unfortunately, it would take many hours to make a tutorial on this, BUT, the web-version of UA-cam has an AWESOME feature which allows you to slow down any video (without a change in pitch).
      If you click the "gear" icon in the lower-right part of the video, a menu will appear. Select "Speed" and change it to something slower. I recommend changing it to 0.25. You should be able to see each finger move in slow-motion. Keep an eye on where my hands are and you should be able to get a good idea of all the notes (especially, if you play along with the slow-motion video). Good luck!

    What is your patch on the JV-90 - did you custom make it or is it one of the predmade ones on the keyboard, I've got the same keys and my band guys are hassling me about not getting this "quite right"....

    • @goatghost
      @goatghost  4 роки тому

      You can tell your bandmates that the sound is not coming from the JV-90. :-) The sound is actually coming from the Fantom X7. In this instance, the JV-90 is sending out MIDI note information on a single channel and the X7 is configured to play a sawtooth patch when it receives note information on that channel. Then, I switch to the X7 keyboard, which has been configured to layer the same sawtooth patch with a piano patch (the first several bars of the song is just synth and acoustic guitar). If you can swing it, you can pick up a used Fantom X7 on eBay for $1,100 or so. Well worth the money, in my opinion. It's a MUCH more versatile instrument than the JV-90, as it includes many more sounds, greater polyphony, complex effects, sampling, and a sequencer.

      The intro (using the upper keyboard) has only a "synth" sound, while the rest of the song (using the lower keyboard) combines both "synth" and "piano" sounds. This is how it sounds on the original recording (though, not sure if Eddie Van Halen played the parts sequentially, in the same take, or if he played them on different takes).
      Anyway, I suppose, I could have simply used the lower keyboard and changed patches between the intro (synth) and main (synth+piano) sections. But, I'm always reluctant to change patches during a song, since it adds an additional action which could possibly go wrong. :-)

I say this with hopes of helping. In my self taught world I would say that each verse has two turns. The chord at the end of each turn is wrong. I swear to you it is. I’m trying to be helpful. The chords just keep repeating themselves there’s no change. Looks to be the thumb note on right hand. I could be wrong thoughts?

Now, I have to relearn it, after playing it the wrong way for all these years! LOL!!!!! Thanks!!!!!
