When I was a young man, I did not think much of this, but now at 77 year of age, it makes me cry ! ! !
"Ain't Misbehaving" is another good one by the King of Stride, Mr. Waller.
This was recorded in 1935.
My Mama used to sing this around the house when she was cleaning. I loved hearing her sing it. There are other renditions from that era but she always said this one was the best. Once again Mama knows.

My mum was a blues singer, loved jazz and blues the most. She was also a fabulous pianist but couldn't read a note of music, she taught herself by listening to Fats Waller records 🥰😁
Some of the greatest musicians didn't read music! Errol Garner is a great example of that!
WOW, this is from my grandparent's era. That was a whole new experience. Might have to start lookin into more of this era of music.
Besides Fats, try Teddy Wilson Orchestra with Billie Holliday, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Wingy Manone, Barney Bigard, Louis Armstrong, for a start.

I am so happy you showed Fats Waller. I learned about him from my grandmother. I have been a fan since I was a young teen in the early '80s. It is rare you find anyone today that even knows his name. But . . . my 8 year old does.

In perspective, 1933 The great world depression, 1939 WW2 started. Not much in the atmosphere for good vibes. A letter may do it, no matter who it's from.
Not the best jazz song, but I appreciate were, and who it comes form. A song that has been done by many, in the Day. Jazz is the finest music there is. Nice reaction, to long ago ERA.

I was fortunate enough to see "Ain't Misbehavin'" TWICE when it first appeared on Broadway in 1978 with Nel Carter, Armelia McQueen, Charlayne Woodard, Andre DeShields, and Ken Page. It literally changed my life, and I fell in love with Fats Waller's music.
I love this song! The measure of "good art" is not what it looks like or what it sounds like, but how it makes you feel. Fats, makes us "feel" what he wants us to feel with a few simple chords, long before the first words are spoken. Then, his simple words of love move us...right where he wants us. Great choice. Great reaction.

India, have you watched Fats Waller's Ain't Misbehavin' rendition from the movie Stormy. It's pure joy. He comedically toys with the piano and really jazzes it up. You will never forget it.
A very talented and underrated musician. Funny, smart as well both musically and lyrically. So sweet and sentimental. My dad was into jazz big time, he collected all kinds of old Jazz and Blues records. He turned me onto this music. Thanks for making this video.
Love this one! Also please try "let's Pretend theres a Moon" - "Sugar Rose" - "It's a sin to tell a lie" - you will not be disappointed. In the UK my mother just loved him always put a smile on her face, and I used to play her old 78 rpm records she had in the 70's when 13yrs old, still love him and play him now.

So cool to see you hearing this for the first time. I love Fats Waller. His best song (IMO) is Ain’t Misbehavin’, which I learned on guitar once (it was hard and I can’t play it anymore). Keep checking out the old stuff!

Fats has so many songs and I have his box set and recordings from 1912 of his piano solos sounds like background music to Charlie Chaplin movies.

I love this song! Madeleine Peyreux did a more current version of this song that’s pretty cool, too. This is my kind of jazz. Old school, sultry, deep, and emotional...but still gives you this feel good vibe.

When I was a teenager my Mum introduced me to Vahn Monroe's "Red Roses For A Blue Lady". I'm glad she did, I just Love it!
George Gershwin used to hire Fats Waller to play at his parties for all the New York swells, Fats was among the stride piano giants of the 20s and 30s, he died young in the mid-forties. Check out "Ain't Misbehavin" live 1943 and if you like piano check out the Duke Ellington solo piano recital in Paris, 1970. This music came out at the height of the Depression. I could listen to the piano introduction all day.
That man knows how to tickle dem ivory's...these recording r very old...they electronically removed all the clicks n pops...sounds nice...my Gran pops had is own Orchestra back in the 30's and 40's ...Ty dear

Check out Little Jimmy Scott, he was probably the finest interpreter of lyrics, in the whole of the 20th Century!
He was still performing, up to his death, just a few years ago, in his 80's!
He covered a lot of modern classics, in his own unique style, but I prefer his older work, from the late 40's & early 50's, like 'When did you leave Heaven', & 'Everybody needs somebody' (no, not the one from blues brothers!)

My personal favorite song by Fats Waller is (and will always be) Honeysuckle Rose. Check it out. Fats was a master of stride piano, but it was his personality that put him over the top and that made him famous as a recording artist and also got him into a few films films.
Also worth watching is the song "That Ain't Right" from the film "Stormy Weather". Fats Waller and Ada Brown.

His style is "Stride" piano. the big left hand is the key, the rhythm section. the right concentrates on the melody.
Like Richard said below, not my music. You are opening the door to people like Earl Bostic, Jimmy McCracklin, Darby & Tarlton, and so many others that came either just before or after World War 2. The foundations of blues, country, and western swing that would join with other influences to create Rockabilly, and later Rock and Roll. The writing was amazing. I am especially amazed by the lyrics to the songs in the 40's, 50's and 60's. You are on a fun journey. Thanks for sharing with us!

Ever hear the Al Capone story with Fats Waller? Al took, kinda kidnapped, Fats and made him play all night and every song he played Al and Friends stuffed Fats pockets with $100 bills. I don't know if it is true, but I believe it. Fats Waller was beloved in the 20s and 30s. While no one liked Jelly Roll Morton.
Music was so simple then yet divine.

Fats is one of my favorites. Sadly he died two years before I was born.
I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in having a Wide and Various taste in music. I like practically every kind from Heavy Metal to Classical, my All-time favorite is Bon Jovi. If you like Old Standards try Peter Dawson's "If Those Lips Could Only Speak". I grew up with the Foster And Allen version, Peter Dawson's is Older but I think he was pretty Great. The Mills Brothers "The Glow-Worm" is Great Fun, I Dare You Not Dance Around When You Hear It. I think Kitty Kallen's "Little Thing's Mean A Lot" has a lot of Timeless advice about how to show Somebody You Love Them.

The first time I ever heard this as a kid was on an album by the Palm Beach Boys. The did cover songs including "Winchester Cathedral" (Another great one of this old-timey 1920'1930's style that you should react to), Actually, there's a 'great' video of the original guys that did the song in the '60's, "Winchester Cathedral - New Vaudeville Band 1966"

I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter was an obscure song that nobody would perform at the time because face it, it's a very corny song, even back then. They gave it to Fats Waller as a throw-in during one of his sessions and he reluctantly threw an arrangement together and performed it with his legendary Rhythm band. Unexpectedly, it became one of Waller's greatest hits. He made a lot of lemons into lemonade, just like this, but this is A+1 prime lemonade. Because of its popularity as a mega-hit, Waller was trapped into performing it live and in the live recordings you could hear him make fun of the lyrics. ("I'm going to sot right down and write myself a postcard") This is a "straight" recording as you can hear.
