Exploring The New Tape and Test Equipment Studio in Porto
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- I gave away my test equipment (two palettes of it at least) and I am happy about that! Because it became the foundation of a new tape and test equipment studio that you too can record in now. It is situated at the non-profit association Sonoscopia in Porto, Portugal. Sonoscopia is a unique place run by musicians and sound artists. Every nook and cranny is filled with objects made by artists who did residencies there. It is truly one of the nicest places in experimental music I have found across the world.
I gave a workshop on how to use this equipment for music, and here is the short version of that. If you are interested in the full process and more knowledge, the unedited version is on my Patreon.

do you have something like that in Berlin? or any fan meet up in Berlin?
My wife and I were lucky (or crazy?!) to visit Sonoscopia earlier this year, specifically to see Hainbach play - hey Porto and Warsaw are, er, 'close' 😉 - and I have to say Sonoscopia is a wonderful place and everyone there were so friendly and welcoming; Wouter served behind the bar for a while and he was nice enough to find me a glass of Port even though it wasn't on the menu, and I even got my first (of several!) beer for free just because we had come a long way.
Of course the gigs were great, first Hainbach and Wouter as Odd Narrative coaxing sounds from all that test equipment (I'm standing at the back in a slightly too bright yellow t-shirt), it was amazing to hear all that gear in person and feel the energy (not to mention heat) that it gives out; really cool (and hot). Then later on, Hainbach played another lovely solo set downstairs in the gig room. What an evening 🙂
Hainbach is the kind of guy who won't go to a mechanic to fix his car when the car starts making funny sounds because he will find them to be better music than radio
Yet another reason for wanting to visit Portugal. Test equipment not intended for making music.
this stuff is so good for lofi haunting dark ambient
Your a beautiful soul Hainbach! Thank you for giving young minds access to your beautiful art of sound!
Great work Hainbach and Wouter @ Sonoscopia! Greetings from WTS Den Bosch and lot's of fun and succes!! Spread the joy!! 🙂
I love every bit of this
11:36 Wow! That sounds SO organic, almost exactly like cicadas on a hot summer day! 🪲
Portugal is on my travel bucket list, and now so is this studio. Good stuff ❤
This was cool. I'm amazed by your ability to turn test equipment into music.
I wish i knew about this place and about you coming to Porto, would love to meet you both. Looking forward to pay a visit ...
I live here in Porto and have been following your work for a while and I can't believe you brought all that stuff here!!
Fantastic Gesture you've given me so much inspiration with your videos and showing that experimental and ambient music is FUN. You're such a generous and genuine guy! Much Love!
0:22 yo the shirt good taste great album
next time I'm in Porto I have to check it out
Bom saber. Anotado.
Hainbach-your test equipment videos are my favorite; and my vinyl copy of landfill totems really motivated me to start making music. Thank you for sharing work that guided and inspired a relative newcomer to making electronic music. Please let me know if you would like to hear what I’ve shared on Bandcamp and UA-cam.
They must grow some outstanding mushrooms in Porto.
Very cool opportunity you've given many people who never could jave had it before!
I also love getting a better sense of the equipment you use with this flyby of the whole setup that was given - it helps me to have a bette perspective both of what sort of things these devices are for and how you use them, which is good background context for your more in-depth videos.
You are Amazing Hainbach!
such a beautiful place
My home town, great! I’m going to visit, thanks!
u look very slay in the footage from workshop , God bless ! great vid
Great job! And I bet it's somewhat of a relief to re-claim all that space in your home studio...until you fill it with new stuff ;)
Illuminatii with their Toyz.
I love this stuff!
oo hey its wouter!
Can't wait to see what you kept and how you use it to make music now. ^^
That's a great initiative to create a space where people can experiment ... sadly Porto are suffocating due to massive tourism and hitten hard by gentrification. I hope this initiative will find his place in the city and bring exchanges with locals and not only people from abroad
Bravo!
Hi Hainbach! In one of your videos, i've seen cracklebox on background. Could you make a video about creative technics (or something like this) with that small guy? It will be interesting...
Freedom 🎉
you are great
It's a Bloke thing.
this is a great giveaway
Nice adhesive tape and IQ test stuff!
I was on vacation in Porto this spring, damn, wish i had known about this place! Also mad props for donating so much of your test equipment so other people can use i
Okay! It looks like it's being stored in a dance studio space... and I'd want to be able to look the opposite direction while patching, to look towards the room, not the wall. The equipment couldn't be stacked as tall, in my mind... which is less useful for inter-patching. So, I don't know what is the best combination of ergonomics and inspiration. But intuitively, I don't think that's it. If someone does a residency, and wants to rearrange that set-up... let them do it!
❤
I love you Hainbach for being such a warm and lovable person and gifting us with your incredible sonic world never heard before. And now this. Wow ❤ I have question. I noticed the telecom box was blue. "A friend of mine" used his Amiga with a software that could do "blueboxing". One could call 020 "free" numbers and send some signals with it which would give you a new ready tone where you then could call any number in the world "for free". Could that software be based on that blue box?
Well these are message systems over telephone lines, so I am sure they have a shared history. This one sends pulses, while I think what your friend was using is based on DTMF tones.
Bem vindo
Dear students, please don’t patch into the 150V output, lol what could go wrong !
I even saw some women at the final performance !
Do I spy a Kozoh Vesta DIG-410 in that 19" rack? I love that digital delay, it's so grungey and dubby. Apart from the one I bought in the early 90s for £70, I don't think I've seen another for decades.
Yes. This is actually the Soundcraft Conrad S-1024 version, but the same I suppose. Great for dub, indeed!
anyone knows what speakers are those in porto?
Mackies with busted speakers
Did you keep the PAR CR4-A? I would love to see more on that box!!!
I still have that 😃
@@Hainbach good to hear!!!
Is it just me, or is Portugal secretly the coolest country on earth?
Def just you

PARADISE!
Good on you Hainbach!
Can you get kapsalon in Porto?
Hainbach being like, "Oh dear, I now have a giant empty gearless shelf. I better not go out and fill it up again with cool gizmos. That would be an unfortunate outcome for me" 😆
Too true
beautiful noises
