  • After The Blue Album and Pinkerton Weezer has seemly declined in quality.
    ▾ o p e n ▾
Weezer is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1992. in 1993, Weezer released their self-titled debut album, also known as the Blue Album. Weezer's second album, Pinkerton (1996), featuring a darker, more abrasive sound, was a commercial failure and initially received mixed reviews, but achieved cult status and critical acclaim years later.

Hey Stemp. Ima stick around and watch you a bit. I doubt I'll comment but I'll be watching, I like your content. If you're up to listening to a new sound, listen to a band called Hum. Unlike the majority of artists that are so afraid of making " bad " music ( whatever that means ), Weezer are one of the few that are not afraid to do something different / look stupid. That is true artistic freedom.

I mean a lot of bands do stuff different and “look stupid” but still make enjoyable, well crafted, music (kgatlw) while Maintaining artistic freedom. I’d argue that weezer does the opposite actually, especially in the past they have tried to replicate what makes other songs successful resulting in lazy and uninteresting music

@@Stemp i think the reason behind many songs sounding like their songs of the past is because rivers cuomo constantly reuses old demos or old lyrics. i think many of songs in ewboite were from the green era(though i could he wrong) and california girls from the white album is an english remake of a 2013 song he did as Scott and Rivers. Mix that with whatever new sound or genre hes trying out and youve got either the best song youve listened in a long time or the 3 to 4 most disappointing minutes in your life.

I genuinely don't understand how anyone can look at albums like spring, ok human, red, ect. and say they take the "easy way out". regardless of if you like the albums or not, and regardless of their quality, that's just unfair. They're all creative records, even mediocre ones (imo) like hurley and black have a lot of effort put into them. Weezer never sets out to make a shitty album. They like to experiment and don't want to restrict themselves to one style. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn't, but they don't take the easy way out. If anything they make things harder for themselves.

totally agreed. i dont understand why people say theyve sold out either. i dont think anybody whos solely interested in money or pandering to the masses could do red album or raditude. if they truly wanted to make things easy for themselves they would make 9 albums with an identical sound to the green album who wouldve all gotten a lukewarm seven on pitchfork.

I keep enjoying Weezer because Rivers is an excellent pop writer imo. I view Weezer as a pop band that occasionally makes rock music. Albums such as the black album and white are just infectiously catchy. If I had to rank the discography from an E To S tier list it'll be this
    S tier:
Blue, Pinkerton, White, and OK human. These are all albums I believe are essential albums for Weezer. They showcase the band at their absolute best.
    A tier:
Maladroit and EWBAITE. These albums are great and are good choices if you want to venture outside of the 90s catalog.
    B tier:
Green, Red, Hurley, Black, and Van Weezer These won't blow your mind or anything but they are fun and overall decent pieces of music. At this point, the albums start to have duds, songs that can range from mediocre to pretty bad, (cough cough where's my sex)
C tier: Make believe and Pacific daydream. These albums aren't very good but not bad. they range from average to mediocre. They have some hidden gems in there but they are few and far between.
D tier: Raditude and teal. They suck. Bad albums.
Snzs are EPs and not albums so they don't count here but if I had to rank spring as it's the only one out as I'm writing this, it would be between C and B tier.

this is all my takes of every album
    (Is my opinion)
Blue: Not joking, probably one of the greatest albums of all time. and deserves a bigger and much better comment than this.
Pinkerton: also one of the greatest albums of all time.
Green: great moments, but it does feel like it was made in a month.
Maladroit: just a solid great album, which for most bands is great, but just the history of Weezer, that’s not right.
Make believe: beginning of an abusive relationship, but looking back on it, I think Beverly Hills is not that awful, The rest is just boring. but I think perfect situation is great.
Red: it’s great, has some bad tracks. But some of the most underrated Weezer songs of all time. Automatic 10/10.
Raditude: alcohol to heroin. What an awful album.
Hurley: it’s like three good songs on this, but the rest is boring.
Everything will be all right in the End: i’m gonna say it, One of the strongest 9/10 of all time. When I think back on songs like back to the shack, and go away. I think they’re annoying tracks. Then I listen to them and I’m quoting every lyric. Great songs. The ending three part Melody is top 15 Weezer songs.
White: I’m gonna say it, this is better than Pinkerton and probably tire with blue. This probably one of the most special albums I ever listen to, every track is fucking phenomenal. California kids, Summer Doki, and Endless Bummer, our top 5 Best Weezer songs. Probably the best album of the 2010s (in my opinion). Just perfect
Pacific Daydream: The album goes from to good music to turn your mind off, to he went back to the Needles.
Teal: not bad, I think there’s like 50 songs that Weezer could’ve cover better.
Black: High as a kite is great, and I don’t remember listening to the rest. Good album cover though.
OK human: The first time I listen to this album, was like two weeks or three week after it release, I just started been listening to the blue album like every day. I played it, and I was like… light 6/10, nothing like Weezer.
But then I listen to it again, and then again, then again… and then like 20 times throughout the year, and I realize that one was fucking fantastic. I think I realized that it’s a Rivers Cuomo album featuring Weezer, and not a Weezer album. It’s about his struggle, fears, and worried about death, not as a College student from 1990s, as an 50 year old man. But also the seeing the joys of life. I’m glad it took a more Orchestra approach. Just glad that Weezer was actually able to experiment, And not makingPop-rock. I think I only issue (same with White) it raises expectation for the next Weezer project. What does album is fantastic, The fourth best Weezer album.
Van Weezer: OK, but nowhere Near as good I just trying to re-create. Wish it was release before OK human.
Spring EP: better than Van/Black sometimes teal. But kind of annoying and parts. I think summer, fall, and winter definitely be more interesting. Seeing from Brian Instagram, there is some good potential here. What a week start.
    Top 5
    Blue & White
    Pinkerton
    OK human
Everything will be all right in the end.
    Maladroit or Red.

Weezer's concept has always had meta elements. The horrible lyrics are a reflection of pop music. Guessing that because he grew up in a cultish environment, this may be how he responds and connects to the world - through his interpretations of what's out there in pop culture. Everything will be alright in the end was very good.

I can’t agree more with your assessment of the White Album. I’d just about given up on them after Raditude. It was an absolute pile of garbage. Red sort of redeemed them and then I was at least partially pleased with Everything Will be Alright in the end. But the White Album was a ray of sunshine from the California coast line.

I think the big problem is Weezer is driven by Rivers the artist, Rivers the business man and Rivers the "delicate", like simultaneously.
So it leads to a disjointed philosophy towards music and output, with all three parts trying to compensate and react to different economic/cultural/personal and fan pressures. That said, he really went off the deep end in the late 2000s and even stopped playing guitar at one point.
Like most albums have forgiveable moments where potential shines though but their career is hard tanked by Make Believe and Raditude in particular. Like it's easy to forget how reviled Weezer were between 2005 and 2012 because of those albums, they were basically THE musical punchline.
I remember getting into them around 2014 and you could literally see the shift from broke to bespoke happen in real time.
ngl tho, Pork and Beans is a super weird one. idk about you but at the time it dropped, I was like a lil kid still and like, no-one mentioned it at school. The only person who ever mentioned it was my mum and that just made, what felt like, at the time, a lame try hard video, feel even more tryhard.
tbf, now, I think it's a pretty cute video in a way but at the time, it really was pretty cringy even as a kid. I guess it doesn't help like, culturally in 2008, everyone else was trying to give off an aura of aggression.

I personally wouldn’t call any Weezer albums “bad”, not even Raditude (although I’m not saying it’s all good, it’s a mixed bag). Personally, on re-listens for every albums, much of it has grown on me leading to me not considering any album bad, although on my first listens I disliked many Weezer albums. I’d definitely suggest re-listening to EWBAITE, as well as OK Human as another commenter suggested. Make Believe too, my biggest hot take is that this album is great. Many of the tracks such as Hold Me, This Is Such A Pity, Haunt You Every Day, Pardon Me, Peace, etc are absolutely underrated in my opinion and deserve more love. Songs like those sort of resemble Pinkerton in terms of lyrics, but are less dark while still being quite dark, reflecting Cuomo’s mental state in the early 2000s which wasn’t too good, but less bad than during the Pinkerton era.
Brief summaries of my opinions on each album:
    Blue: Great, very great.
    Pinkerton: Best Weezer album.
Green: Good, starts off strong but becomes too same-ish by the end.
Maladroit: Love the album, but becomes slightly same-ish near the end too but to a lesser extent than Green (basically just Possibilities and Love Explosion feel to same-ish)
Make Believe: Great, most tracks are very good.
Red: Like the experimentation and diverseness of sound, overall great album.
Raditude: Mixed bag, has a few horrible tracks, and has some good to great ones in there too.
Hurley: Similar to Raditude, except the bads are slightly less bad and the album is more bland in general.
DTFM: Good, if not great, definitely deserves more love.
EWBAITE: Great album, love the themes in it.
    White: Another great album.
Pacific Daydream: Quite underrated in some spots, good album overall.
Teal: Cool, yet unnecessary and I’d be fine without it.
Black: Same thing I said about PD.
OK Human: Amazing album, very interesting too.
Van Weezer: Great, but some bland parts. Also why did they ruin Briny?
Spring: Pretty great, love Opening Night and Angels on Vacation especially, they give strong Blue Album vibes in their choruses.

So I'll start by saying I'm not a Weezer fan, and I don't know many of their songs. When I have heard their songs, or seen a video, it seems to me that Weezer wants to be a rock band with good songs and cool guitar riffs, but maybe they were college during the "grunge" era and guitar songs were unpopular at that time. They seem to be embarrassed when they play a good riff, and then mock what they just played as though they were better than the music they're trying to play. Nerds.
