  • New cycle lanes are preventing disabled people from getting taxis in London as they cannot hail taxis from the roadside.
As the majority of disabled people use taxis to travel, the community is urging to be considered in future road plans.
Disability equality consultant, Mik Scarlet is happy that cycling is being encouraged but wants travel to be made more accessible in the capital.

My and my wife are both wheelchair-users, we cannot travel together in one bus. Because of stupid TFL rules, forbidding two wheelchair-users going in one bus. At the Tube station staff are not often eager to help us. At the Acton Central Overground station, we were once told that they didn't help us because of coronavirus. At the Acton Town, the stuff don't help us but passangers lift me and my wife to the train. Only unmanned stations such as DLR are OK and a few fully accessible stations (Jubilee line) where we don't need to ask for a ramp. The TFL stuff is often very busy with their smartphones, the disabled passengers are only disturbance for them :-)

Why would you not be allowed to go on the bus just because of being in a wheelchair?

It is a silly rule. I am in a powerchair and my partner uses a small folding mobility scooter, which folds to the size of a shopping trolley. Luckily we are able to get round the rule this way, because hers does not take up much space. I dont know why they cant have folding seats, and people could use the space how they wanted.

So true..... UK hates disabled people! I 100% can confirm that!
My respect for all the people that work with disabled people and for all people that do something for others in need!
I struggle to put food on the table every single day and currently care for a severely disabled person for free, because the UK's gov is too busy sending money and weapons to the Ukraine war.
Shame to all politicians and leaders from all countries! They are all a disgrace and bring shame to humanity!

I think part of our problem is when buildings and places are 'listed' to protect heritage it's a lot more difficult to get planning permission. For example, I went to Wollaton Hall the other day and while I could go to most places it was still extremely difficult. Now they've don't a hell of a lot of work but part of the problem is the fact that it's an Elizabethan Grand manor house. So they're not working with just an old building, this building is over 500 years old and they were built in a way so that they wouldn't be moved. More work CAN be done for sure, but the amount of hoops they have to jump through is eyewatering.

TFL and most local councils, they are practically getting away with discrimination against disabled and elderly people. Cycle lanes with barriers and LTNs blocking routes and causeing traffic. The excuse that they didn't take in account of how it may affect disabled and the elderly is laughable. They knew exactly what they were doing. Everything has a purpose to future plan to make London affordable for the rich only. This has nothing to do with green lifestyle but more to do with money. It's like these covid Road blocks, these plans were online and accessible to the public before the outbreak. They took advantage of the situation, an excuse not to have consultation. Can't wait until next election, especially the mayor election I'm counting down the days 😡

I guess the challenge is to fit between the spaces that cyclists use, then you get access!
As a cyclist though I'm not used to seeing wheelchairs trying to fit between bollards on designated tracks. If I'm doing 30-50km/h and all of a sudden down to 10km/h or less

Surrey is been challenged by trying to bring back in Street scapes which were outlawed in 2014 as they put disabled users in danger. The avent of electric vehicles which are completely silent will mean street scapes must protect the pedestrians with hard kerbs, railings, removal of pavement carparking, further fines for chairs tables on the pavements, and bans on electric scooters.
We now want the abolistion of the major of london with his imprisionment according to the law for his failure to allow disabled blind on the underground.

Mobility for people with physical disabilities is getting much easier, not more difficult. I wish the English would adopt positive thought rather than always criticising & complaining. You'd be surprised the body's response to affirmation rather than doubt.

really? is this the reason London can't ride to work?
because of the very few disabled people who are affected by the cycle lanes
he can't wheel himself a few meters down the street
we can make things easier now but in 200years when the days are so hot that the people can't leave their houses
then the nights are so cold the homeless die of hypothermia, we will go
only if wheel chair guy wheeled himself a few meters to allow for more access for bikes
    this is a red herring
this actually takes away from the point of global warming to focus on treatment of the disabled
the point of those cycle lanes is to encourage the fat lazy people of London to stop driving their cars and ride a bike to work
to save themselves and the planet
to say "I can't do it because of the disabled is dishonest"

    • @krob9145

He's right they should be included after all some disabled do cycle. He's not saying there shouldn't be cycle lanes. He saying that they should be made in such a way for wheelchair uses can still get picked up or dropped out of a car. These type of cycle lanes exist but of course they cost more to build than just putting up bolted down bollards, armadillos and wedges which is the cheapest quickest segregrated bike lane to install.

Saying that disabled people should basically have to accept second hand citizenship just because the council don't want to pay for proper bike lanes is deplorable.

You are an entitled leftist. I'm a wheelchair user and entitled people like you piss me off to no end. Why don't you go work for an organization that takes people with disabilities out into community and try to push someone who is disabled and in a wheelchair about town and see how frustrating and exhausting it is to go down a couple of meters from where everyone else gets picked up because someone put a bike lane there and didn't think about people with disabilities.
