Awesome...We did Onion to Whit a couple of years ago and met several HST'ers up at Guitar Lake, everyone highly recommended the Hike. We're looking to get Permits for an August/Early Sept 2022. Looking forward to it! Thank you for sharing....
I am a Korean photographer. Sierra. I've never been there, but it's so beautiful. Beautiful mountains, clear water, clean air... I'm going to heal thanks to you. Thank you.
Great job on the video pans and editing. Thanks for including enough footage of the ascent up Whitney. Gives a better understanding of what's required as well as the views. Nice to see how much fun and playfulness you all showed during the trip.
Incredible video! This video was the inspiration for my wife and I to start backpacking over 4 years ago. I turn 60 this year and we will be hiking the HST in SEP, 2024. I do wish Keep It Alpine would create more content. Your talents are unparalleled! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you for the kind words! It's so nice to hear that our videos inspired you. Enjoy the HST. Its a beautiful hike! We're hoping to get out on the trail a bunch this year! We might actually be doing the HST Sep 2024 as well, so maybe we'll cross each other on the trail!
Attempted this hike back in 2018 with my brother and dad, due to illness we had to turn around at Hampton lake. We plan on going back and this just made me so much more excited to go back and tackle it this upcoming summer. Thanks for documenting so well and it’s an amazing hike I can’t wait to get back out there!
I must've watched this video 3x before heading out to the HST and now watching it again AFTER hiking the HST and I gotta say, both years are so different. No more blowout this year. That part was completely redone. Great job guys! Love this video.
I completed the HST on Sept. 3, just ahead of most of the monsoon weather. Looks like you also had a great trip and stayed ahead of the rain. Great images & thanks for sharing!
Brings back great memories. I did whitney in 93 and 96 on the mt.whitney trail. Boy I envy you young guys. Cant do it anymore I just do small hikes in the great smoky mountains.
Great job on the video. HST was my first backpacking trip in 2017 so it is very special to me. It looks like our schedule was about exactly the same. I saw your JMT video previously also. Y'all have a great time it looks like. Thanks for the memories and adding your own flair to the hike. Congratulations to Allison for her first Whitney summit.
I love this video so much! I’ve never seen an adventure video put together so well. It looks like you had a real fun group and an amazing time! I’m hoping to do this trail sometime soon :)
Great video! Love all the fun you had. Looks like you finished a few days after us (we were on the trail on 9/1. Wish we would have done your itinerary. That climb out of Junction Meadows might now have been such a suffer-fest! Can't believe how hot it gets down in that canyon. Anyway, thanks for sharing your trip. Looking forward to checking out your JMT video!
Maryann Hazel we actually finished on 08/31, so we were just ahead of you! The hottest afternoon we had was coming up Big Arroyo. We were going to try and go to Moraine Lake, but it was just too hot. Glad you liked this one! Enjoy the JMT video, such a great trip!!

Great video...we’re doing hst to Whitney then JMT nobo this September... can’t wait to get back to Sierra! Haven’t been there since 2015 when did JMT first time, unfortunately we’re on a tighter schedule. Hopefully reach Hamilton lake day one and moraine day two to set up for Whitney summit day 5....
Other than mispronouncing a few names (Kaweah and Visalia) great video. Loved that Waylon song. You could hear Ralph Mooney killing it on the pedal steel. I look forward to making this trek someday. Great work.
Awesome video....the best. We must of just missed each other on the JMT. You mentioned that you rented a car at Whitney Portal to get back to Visalia...is the rental plave actually near the portal?
There is not a rental car place near Whitney portal. We rented a car at home, drove our personal car and rental car to Whitney Portal. We left our personal car and drove back home together in the rental. The next morning drove the rental to Visalia. There is an enterprise walking distance from Sequoia Shuttle, which takes you to Crescent Meadow.
I would like to do the HST but what car rental business did you use in Lone PIne? I have searched online but could not find any. . .?? HOw do I get from Lone Pine to Visalia?
The vehicle logistics are the hardest part of the HST. No rental service in Lone Pine. The day before we started in Visalia, we drove two vehicles to Lone Pine (one rental and one personal) and parked our personal car at Whitney Portal to be waiting for us at the end. The next day, we drove the rental to Visalia and returned it to the Enterprise there, and then got on the Sequoia shuttle into the park. Hopefully that helps.
Never too early to start planning. The travel logistics can be a bit tricky with both trailheads. Permits can be hard to come by, so I would focus on that first. As for gear, food, and fitness training and planning, that differs for everyone and their experience level in the backcountry. We typically plan summer/fall trips in late winter/early spring, mostly so that we can secure the wilderness permits, but also so that we have fun trips to look forward to throughout the year.
Thanks!! You are going to love it. We sometimes carry a solar charger on the longer trips, or sometimes just one of those small usb battery blocks. For this one, I think we had 5 GoPro batteries. Don’t think we had to charge.
KEEP IT ALPINE thank you so much, I followed your advice and have a permit booked for this month on High Sierra! If I could trouble you for one more piece of advice, it would be so greatly appreciated! I am a video-aholic and was planning on bringing my pro camera and lens, but since its combined weight is 5 lbs, I’m thinking maybe I should just go with a GoPro since this looks to be challenging trail and I keep reading the horror stories about high altitude. My base weight is 25 lbs. Look very forward to your thoughts if you have time. Thank you!
Really enjoyed your video! I did an overnight to Hamilton lake and back. But, someday I’ll do the whole trail! Where did you rent your car? How much did it cost?
David K we rented our car in Los Angeles and dropped it off in Visalia. I don’t remember what the exact cost was, just a day rental from Enterprise. Then took the shuttle into the park.
My (Madeline) base weight is normally between 25 and 30 lbs depending on additional gear, the season and maybe a few extra desserts ;). Mark's is between 35 and 40lbs. Let me know if you have any questions about the trail.
We have the Garmin InReach Explorer linked to the Earthmate app. We don’t really use the app for navigation at all as that is not as reliable as a paper map. We just look at it on occasion to see our stats (avg moving speed, distance, elevation gain, etc).
@@keepitalpine3041 Hi there. I was curious to know which paper map you used. I'm having trouble finding something like Nat Geo map of John Muir trail. Hoping for a single detailed map set like that. Thanks!

KEEP IT ALPINE - we went to Moraine Lake....wishing we would have stayed there too. The Milky Way would have lined up perfectly.
I just watched 17 minutes of this video with my 2 year old nephew, every time he’d seen a mountain he’d say awww!
That’s awesome! Start ‘em young!!

Great video! Also saw your Ray Lakes Loop video. Which one did you enjoy more? I’m trying to choose
Brett Lyon both a great! If you have the time for the High Sierra trail, I’d suggest that trip. More time in the mountains!

could do w/o the music. give me sounds of nature any day
a big shame you have to have a permit just to hike
