🚜 Amazing setup! The John Deere tractors and Lockwood Aircup planters working in perfect harmony is a true marvel of modern agriculture. Precision and power at its best!
I want to demonstrate the size difference in our farm equipment to yours In West Australia every machine is extremely wide or long .We use your Macks and kenworths a lot inn dusty rural areas , they pull 4 trailers , GCM of 170 tonnes and our planting machines are 80 feet wide . I hope this enlightens your country men and women who work on the lands and for plenty of moisture in the ground this year , praise God !
Hey there, Spud Rangler. Did you ever stop to consider that you could probably get two - instead of just one - potato crops per year if you cross-bred the Russett potato with the Mexican habanero chile.? That way, the habanero's natural "heat" would keep the ground warm and soft during the winter months, and you would have an entirely new market for your "hot" potatoes down south of the border.
We went to a Mutual Aid fire at a potato farm many years ago. That farmer had a lot of seed potatoes in an older barn, and when it caught fire, it turned out to be the best-smelling fire I ever went to!
Impressive machinery. I like this is a family farm and seeing all of you working hard. I would imagine the maintenance on this equipment is time-consuming as well. I'm sure you and your family have learned to tackle a lot of mechanical issues since machines don't break down on schedule or in the shop.
Hey drone footage really fantastic and amazing it amused me and such footage within mountain make scene very beautiful and this landscaping view is breathtaking you should make drone footage at the start of the video which makes video more interesting and why you don't use other type of planters such as spudnik or grimme which fertilizer you apply down and how much you invest on potatoes this year
Beautiful video. Very informative. 2,300 pounds of seed per acre. So at a, was it a nine-fold increase, that is an increase of 2,300 x 9 = 20,700 pound ~10-ton increase, and that has to pay for the land value per year, all the equipment, the fuel, the fertilizer, the manpower, all of the same for the harvest. Good for you guys. I applaud you. I love farming.
Yeah, some years it’s hard to get enough out of the crop to pay for the expenses. This year is going to be close, because after the awesome crop last year, all the contract prices went down a lot.
Just found that video and your channel. Thanks for going over all the details. I enjoyed the laid-back type of presentation. It's really interesting to see the differences and similarities in how we do it in Germany. Keep up the content, liked, and subscribed.
Well I’m glad you found our channel. I’m glad you liked it. The video video you commented on is our planting video from last year. I just posted our planting video from this year in which we have three planters go check it out.
I just happened to stumble upon your channel today. Fastening process . I have seen a lot of beans and corn planted, but never potatoes. The drone footage is especially interesting.
In the next two years I'm gonna make 2 videos, one for John deere machines and the other one for case farming machines, I'ma be one of the biggest potato large scale farmer's.. I'ma supply around the World... Eddie from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 😍
I love farm channels on Utube, there are a few farm channels, and I like this one too, I liked it, I subscribed it,I notificationed it,with the bell, and commented on it 😊😊
Hand somebody a grease gun to use between loading planters. I always taught guys if you can hear a joint then we already failed, and if you think this work is hard now... wait till we don't have a machine to do it for us. Years ago I was up in your area getting some of the nations earliest fiber optic networks up and going. Always wanted to drop in on a farm, but growing up farming I'm not about to interrupt planting or harvest. We ran plenty of Lockwood equipment for sugar beet harvest.
Everybody always thinks that it’s a squeaky joint. What is squeaking on that loader is the brakes. the joints aren’t squeaking. We grease it up every time we use it but the brakes are inside of the axles. Thanks for watching. That’s cool that you used to farm.
This looked like the Hammett, Glenns Ferry area close to where I live at first. Now I think it's more Eastern Idaho. Either way, great video. Always see them getting harvested and dumped but I never get a chance to see them planted.
Some people pre mark their rows like that but we just work the ground deep so it’s soft enough for the planters to make their own rows. You also need gps when using multiple planters.
On irrigation with SKW system you get a better dividing of water. And til 5% up in oxygen in the soil. The available minerals are better taken. On the sprayer the minerals you spray work better. And the sprayer cleans better/faster.
Can you please make video how you grow these potatoes.. I mean which fertilizer or any growth materials you use and when.. It will be a lot helpful.. I like how you guys describe those details..
Great video and interesting too, after working on various potato farms over the years planting by hand and with planters, I now haul the potatoes to the processing plant to be shipped to the US and across Canada . What varieties do you have and what State or Province are you planting in? Thank you and happy farming.
It's very interesting watching your machinery, you can plant in windy conditions but not rain, is your fertilizer also calculated on how much liquid you can put down, thanks for sharing.
Yes, we can plant in the wind but we do not want the rain to wash off the insecticide on the seed and the fertilizer is calibrated to put down 100 gallons per fill of the planter
I’m glad you like the video, as far as per field, each field is different because they are all different sizes but our yield per acre was around 540 sacks
Yeah, there’s a little pin that pops in and locks it if it’s in a certain position so that one must have just been locked. Our planters are pretty old and sometimes they break.
Hello, really interesting. Is it usual, to cut the potatoes which are used for seed? I am from Austria ( not Australia, no Kangoroos) where we do not do it this way, because it is said, that it is not good because it is not healty for them. Greethings from Austria 🇦🇹
We cut them to get a uniform size. The ones that are small we don’t have to cut. You do have a small risk of introducing bacteria into the seed when cutting but we have never had a problem. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
Ex potato farmer from the UK, we used to grow 550 acres. 500 was prepack for the supermarkets and 50 was our own seed for next season. We had cup planters. Do the cut seed result in planting misses as you have uneven shaped tubers to fit the round suction cup? That would be something I would be concerned about.
Why not start counting at 0 rather than 1? That is what I do when counting plant populations. Even when determining the size if a farm the starting end is 0.
How long does the liquid fertiliser tank last in comparison to the hopper of seed potatoes? Are these heritage potatoes or GMO potatoes? Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
is potato farming like sugar beat farming? yall are contracting by X company to grow and harvest then provide potatoes so on? idk if u mention in video. making this comment 1:30 into the video.
Ah. Much nicer than having to stand on the back of the planter poking the grade stake down in the bins to keep the seed (hand cut) and dry fertilizer flowing all while the dust is billowing around you..
Yes the seeds are just cut up potatoes. They are edible before we cut them but we treat them after we cut them with fertilizer to help them grow. They are also a fourth generation potato and will produce a fifth generation potato like the ones you see in the store.
When you put SKW-system on your sprayer, you can deduct in chemicals. Not everybody likes that. You go from 💧 to 💦 the liquid dries faster and goes in at each leef hole. Main thing is that you clean the sprayer more easy. Just like washing hands with 75 or 90 Fahrenheit warm water.
Looks like Idaho. 6000 feet above sea level. ??? Or my guess. Mechanize machinery at it best. Step by step process. To get the planting done ,then wait for the dear Lord to take over. The dear lord to take over, he’s been slacking lately then, isn’t he? Conditions have been hard and prayers do nothing but maybe even making it worse. It’s called nature bud it’s called science and it’s predictable and explainable, unlike faith and religion. Don’t discredit the hard work and science behind modern farming by trying to bring religion into it. It’s offensive.
Why don't you fill the planters up from the pilefrom the pile in the shed before the truck then you save a step for the first loads and less spills 7:36
We actually plant twice as fast as the 12 row planters. So they wouldn’t be any faster. They also wouldn’t fit down some of the roads we have to go down.
Enjoy your videos, we hauled seed potatoes from Alberta to Idaho years ago. Only thing I would do differently is unload from the truck right into the planter, that would eliminate the loader, maybe I’m dreaming but I always try to think of less steps saves time and most of all fuel. Looking forward to more videos. Cheers my friend.
Just stumbled upon your channel today. Great narration of what is going on for the non potato farmers out there.
Thanks and welcome

They work well together.
First time for seeing potato planting at this scale. Pretty impressive. I dont think I've seen a planting implement tucked in so close to the tractor.
Most of the new planters are a draw bar mount. not many of these out there
Thank you for helping to feed the world.
Our pleasure!

G'day great video mate
With a new variety it must take a big effort to grow seed from a single plant to a 1,000 acre field of seed potatoes.
Yes, it’s definitely a big effort

Yes they are specifically for seed

It might with cup planters but we use aircup planters that suck the seed to the cup so we don’t get many misses.
i once did 0.1 acres by hand in my back garden does that count?
Sure why not
Great Video....On a Good day how many acres can you put in with one planter
Usually about 50 acres per planter

Well, we use a 9510 RT a new one is probably around 700 or 800,000 but hours we picked up used and you can find used ones for 100 to 200,000
wow ! tHANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY .
I was wondering why do you skip a row when planting? How do you not mess up the line?
The planters would hit each other if they went next to each other. We use gps to keep the lines in the right spot
@@RockyMountainFarmer woah didn’t know that gps is a thing in planting awsome! Thanks for the answer
