Modifying a Model A Frame for my Hot Rodded T

  • In this video I start disassembling my 27 Model T so I can start welding on the frame. The frame I'm working with is an original 1928/1929 Model A frame that has been kicked in the rear. Up until this point everything was just measured and tack welded together. So I've basically been an assembly line of cutting, grinding and welding. Definitely A LOT of work, but I liked the idea of a traditional frame under the T. Let me know what you guys think of this project!

Coming together ... are you going to cut off the part of the rear frame that hangs below the frame? From what I’ve seen the fish plates are usually a horizontal triangulated piece that gives you more welding surface area

I’m wondering (genuinely curios not critical) why you didn’t mount the front axle off the crossmember that was already there. It seems to far back where it is now but that’s hard to tell from a video and not actually being there looking at it.
I’ll be putting up a video tomorrow that will likely have people thinking “WTH is he doin?” lol
I’m really diggin this build btw

  • @SweatyFatGuy
    @SweatyFatGuy 4 роки тому +2

That T is lookin sweeeeeet! When you build stuff and do heavy work like this, the shop ends up not looking like a showroom. I discovered that a vehicle takes up much less room when its put together, when its apart it takes up 3x as much space. My shop is packed, it has a 72 Cutlass on the rotisserie, 71 Mustang fastback, 65 GTO on the lift, 72 Formula, and a 78 IH skid steer... then all the tools, equipment, somewhere around 10-15 engines and transmissions scattered around. Tires, fuel barrels, and the snowblower take up more space.
I clean at the end of the project, and right before paint. Also I tidy in the spring, which is on the agenda for next week. If you clean every day, you end up spending more time cleaning than working. However if you don't keep your tools straightened out and put them back after each job, you can't find them and end up looking more than working. Its a balancing act..

If this were my project I'd add substantially more gusset at the kick-up. This is a very high stress area and while what you've done is probably safe and probably won't break, the car will most likely "bounce" as the frame flexes at that joint. It's all hidden behind the body panels so make the gussets big and strong. Also, your frame is not stock Model A as it has a "sweep" just about at the firewall. A stock Model A is dead flat on the top from front to back. The sweep is a no-cost way of mildly lowering the front without the ugliness of a "Z". Keep up the good work! Enjoy your videos!

Nothing boring about this , this is the hart of the car your dealing with. I would check for squareness of frame rails as you don't want it dog walking or eating tires . The straighter the rails are the better it will corner . Also shoot a string from the center of wheel front to back axle with a bubble level to check alignment and rake. Might want to set the frame up on a regular frame rack and twist it a might to get everything happy with suspension. Also check distance between center of front axle to center of rear axle & alignment for tracking on each side. You will know more about the frame after you hang the gauges on it on a professional frame rack as you know your floor is not dead flat. The better you get this frame now the more you will enjoy driving the car in the future .

  • @pappabob29

I would put another one of those triangular gussets under the upper kick just like the ones you put where it meets the original frame. They would "match" and should be plenty strong !! Traditionally, the boxing plates are cut so they intersect with the "inside edges of the frame channel and the resulting "fillet" fills the outside corner of the box. A weld bead the entire length. and ground to provide a small radius.

Hell, Dan, no one sees things the same and it is so hard to put your head in someone else's project, like you said starting at the back, knock the stubbs off that drop below the frame and leave all that other for someone else unless you wanted to put diamonds in those places the channel makes a corner and then do some fancy stitch look to it to give the impression that it will never break. From the rear end itself to the top of that last part of the frame where it ends, put some coilovers like off the back of a sportster. They're not much of a shock but might tie it up enough to keep coils between frame and rear end from falling out when jacked up or even some bolt through the top and then through some kind of fabbed up clamp so they can't fall out unless unbolted and up front a singular spring from one side to other like a rocking chair with the eyes connected on either end and the center clamped to the center to give some room between axle and frame. I would try to find those old fashioned shocks that looked like a master cylinder and that part bolts to the frame and the arm to the suspension to limit travel on the front axle. Hide everything in the center since you or anyone else sees it and set floor in deep so the driver sets low. Those old school transmissions are flimsy.... shit, that is a automatic so no worries. I would drop something through the floor than resembles a standard and have a floor shifter that is up high an some will say cool. It would just ratchet back an forth but the big deal is cup holder or no cup holder?/LOL. Don't do a lot as they want to add the bling I think so they can say they built it when all they did was throw a spare in the trunk and paint the wheels. Now both the headlight buckets and taillights look cool to me. Don't cut more than you have to or make real pretty cause this is the part that they like and pay the most for as a good salesperson will say, hell for whats left now that the hard part is over an I could finish now in a week. Hell everytime someone says simple for you just remind them you started the same way and when "your" done with your "new ride" you won't believe how good "you" feel... build them up and never say much once they are sold as they do it themselves then/lol

Really the thought of the taillights made from fuel pumps a cool rat rod item. I threw the old school lowriders slick, sick stripes in candy, different colors.
Your car, tastes, and mad skills. Pull a Sinatra, and did it my way. To heck with all else's ideas. That rear decklid had to have been a B otch, I did a small 16guage piece in the metal shop where I used to work. It was a pain.

Dan at the speed shop glad to see you stitched the whole frame if you’re going to build more than one rat rod hot rod I tell you to build a rotisserie get up off the floor and all bent over let’s see if you get the bug and get gas you’re hot and continue to build hot rods rat rods then build a rotisserie the guys that I ran with the building street rods and hot rods and model a is always stitched the entire frame in knowing you you’re gonna want to stand on his thing and smoke the tires because I like those Mickey Thompson slacks that’s period. Correct tires,,, as for the Corvair tail lights do used a 1950 Pontiac tail light almost looks like a small ice cream cup just about the size of your Corvair‘s and Free it for me,,,, and free for you so use them keep up the great work take care junkman do

What a great job looking bitching.. I'm loving it Dan.. If your going to keep on gussets it I wouldn't worry about fish plates but that's up to you.. If your going to fish plates just cut diamond shaped plates like 3-4 inches in diameter and that should be good.. But as long as you keep on gusset it like that I wouldn't but better to be more safe than sorry.. And make sure you keep on checking you're frame is still boxed and true.. ^^^, diamonds are the "classic" shape, do as neat as possible rather than trying to hide them, knock the pointy corners slightly round so as to avoid hotspots when welding (IMO it also makes them look more "finished"). IF you are OCD (I am) make them all the same and centered on a given axis of diamond. Seen a few really old school where the diamonds are later painted a different colour than the frame (black frame, gold diamonds).

You can get fairly affordable new fenders for the arse end and for the front from Factory Five Racing. They sell those parts apart from their kits if you want to. Or you could get a couple of wheel barrels and futz with those and some sheet metal to make some custom jobs lol Beaumont paint bomb it in the end then satin clear coat it. Get a junkyard LS motor for a couple hundred. The one junkyard outside of Winterpeg has a bunch of LS's ready to pull... talk to the lads from Sweat Pants Posse or SPPtv [pretty sure you know those characters]. They're all over the junkyard motor pull thing and the wiring harnesses that come with them [they're pulling harnesses and computers for the LS jobs all the time]. lol

Instead of adding a 2 inch block for front suspension clearance you could shorten the front of the frame so it ends behind the front axle. Move the front spring hangers to the bottom of the brackets welded to the back of the front axle that conect the axle to the radius rods. This way your front axle can't ever hit the frame and you set up the ride height of the front of the frame as low as you want. We call it suicide style in the states. It's your car so you do it how you want but fish plating those diagonal welds on the rear kick is overkill. That tubing should bend before those welds give out.......if they were done correctly.

Paint it with rust converter first which will turn it black and protect it from rusting any further and then paint it black over that to finalize the protection etc etc

I put an A frame under my 26/27 T coupe it only makes sence if you look at the difference in frames. If you are running a v-8 it will save the work needed to build a Hot Rod

You need to bolt two 2x10s together in the overhead and use a chain fall to raise it
