      The problem with the Chase travel portal is it tends to be more expensive than each airline's website. So I typically just book airfare from whatever airline company's website directly.

    I also use Lyft on a regular basis, and the 10x over the 5x boost is a huge deal and makes the CSR a no brainer.

    I'm fresh out of college and the reason I'll be applying for the chase sapphire preferred over the reserve is mostly because I don't fully know how much I'll be traveling (I do want to travel though) and I don't wanna be forced to try and attempt to travel every year to use that 300 dollar travel credit. The preferred will allow me to rack up UR points and use them for travel whenever I want and since I have a chase freedom and freedom unlimited card, it'll boost those cards point values by another 25% redeeming them through the portal to make it 1.875% return on all purchases with my freedom unlimited card and 6.25% on my freedom card. And once life settles down this card will give me an idea if this is a lifestyle that fits me and if it does then I'll upgrade to the CSR

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  4 роки тому

      Yep, that makes sense. If you aren't ready to spend thousands of dollars of your own money yet traveling, then the CSR is not a good fit for you.

      @@JakeBroe I'm kinda in the same boat. I wanna do traveling, but I dont think my spending will be enough to reach that point where the CSR overtakes the CSP. Also I plan on applying for a new credit cards (mostly no annual fee cards) every time i complete a signup bonus. So that will require a certain amount of spending on top of meeting the spending for the CSP break even point. I'm gonna do the 3 chase business ink cards after I get the prefered which will make me at 4/24

    Great breakdown man. I was still actually considering the CSR for my next card. But I think I may open the Business Ink Preferred just for the 80k bonus. That 1k in portal redemption. But of course it’s a one time thing, unless I open a new car for a different business 😎. Finally I’m 4/24, so trying to make a wise card decision next. May I’ll do both, but gotta make sure I can hit the minimum spend.

    • @JakeBroe

      @NaamWynn 4 роки тому +1

      @@JakeBroe Yea I thought about that as well. I'm just trying to time it correctly before my next trip. I already have 2 Ink Cash. I then may consider getting the Ink Unlimited next since there is no annual fee associated. Once I get the MSL there, I'll try to get the Ink Preferred, then maybe the CSR. I just wonder how much credit my business cards will get. If I hit my max, I'll get a recon and move credit around.

    I appreciate you providing the math and budget for your breakdown. Another thing to consider; some in this community arent necessarily "all in" on either Chase or Amex. We have our feet in both ecosystems and like diversification in our point currencies. The math provided implied ALL the yearly expenses on Chase products. For those that diversify our points and have the AMEX Gold for example, it makes since to have the CSP because we use Amex for Food/Groceries and the CSP for the broad travel category and transfer partners. With the Amex Gold having an effective Annual fee of $30 and the CSP having an annual fee of $95, you essentially gain access to both ecosystems for $125. All that being said, if I were in only one ecosystem, I like your philosophy on the CSR.

    I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but since Lyft is essentially for the US, the perk is useless for international travel ( which is when I use rideshares). People like me should value Lyft at $0 in doing the calculations. Also I really love your videos - clear and easy to understand!

      Thanks Louise! Yeah, I have the AmEx platinum and get a $15 Uber credit a month. What's the point of including ride share benefits on travel cards when you can use them while traveling? Ridiculous!

  • @Kraden26
    @Kraden26 4 роки тому +2

    9:10 Although I see and agree with the point you're making, the Citi Double-Cash got rid of nearly all travel benefits (rental insurance, cancellation/interruption/delay protection, travel accident insurance, baggage delay protection, etc). So now, it's only a 2% back card with no benefits whatsoever.

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  4 роки тому +2

      Yep, I agree! If you value the CSP for its static abilities when purchasing flights or renting cars, then it is worth the $95 to you. But the card should not be used for buying anything else because it's point redeeming potential just slowly loses you value when you factor in the opportunity costs of using other card setups for dining and travel.

    What about in combination with the Amex Gold/BBP and Freedom?
    For me, the CSP makes more sense in that it’s only a backup for me when my Amex Gold isn’t accepted for dining and a means for me to use the Freedom and occasionally Freedom unlimited points to transfer partners. (Usually Hyatt or SW)
    I don’t find myself often buying travel with money, and have almost exclusively used points/miles for my travel in the past few years.
    I used to have the reserve but I never used the lounge access and it was a bit of a chore to hit the $300 in travel spending. Is there still a compelling reason for me to go back to the reserve or should I stick with the CSP?

      I think there is a place for the CSP, and you (Ryan) are pretty close to the demographic that would benefit. Occasional traveler, but someone who (like me) wants to do all my travel on points, and not really use the "travel" category because you're not spending much money on travel! But still want the protections and need one of the 3 cards that "unlocks" the modifier and the travel partners.

  • @cab9191

    I'm using the CSP simply as a conduit to Hyatt points and using the Chase Freedom 5% categories to gain the points. I don't use the CSP for any other reason bc I use the Wells Fargo propel and AMEX BCE to get 3% on groceries, gas, travel, and dining (when not using the Freedom 5% categories)... This actually equals 4.5% back for flights with transfers to my WF Signature card.... With this I come out way ahead using the CSP over the CSR... I have high cash back returns, high returns for Hyatt, and high flight returns too... I LOVE my hybrid strategy, especially for only a TOTAL of $95/year in annual fees.

    I would like to see the CSP move up to $150 AF, $30 Doordash Credit, 5X with Lyft, to really step up their game. Joking aside, of course changing it to 2X Gas and grocery as a complimentary card, would create quite a stir. Great video BTW, you and Waller have great potential for growth in 2020.

      Thanks TJS! I'm am also going to call it now, the annual fee for the CSP will get increased by the end of the year. $150 sounds about right but it could go higher. The game plan of course is adding credits that look like they offset and then most ordinary people blow them off.

  • @rffinances8567
    @rffinances8567 4 роки тому +4

    Beyond the sigh up bonus, the Chase Sapphire Preferred doesn't offer much. The point multipliers aren't good, and even with the boost from the travel portal, you can get more value on dining and travel from the Wells Fargo Propel. The travel protections are nice, but you can also get those elsewhere.
    A point about priority pass though is that it's only useful if you're going to an airport that has a lounge. The two airports I fly out of most often don't have a lounge and neither do most of the places I fly to. There's definitely value to having priority pass, and I got to take advantage of it last time I traveled, but when running the numbers, make sure you're realistic about how often you'd use it.
    Something else to consider with the point earning is that you can get more value from the Wells Fargo Propel than with the CSP, so that should be the comparison to see if the CSR is worthwhile, which would make the difference $68. Still, that requires an additional card so is more complex, and you'd also probably want to put a lot of the travel on the CSP for the travel protections. The math can get really interesting here.

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  4 роки тому

      All good points, I agree. I still tell all my family and friends to just stick to the best no annual fee cash back cards... if people want to chase these luxury cards for sign up bonuses and the close or downgrade them in a year, that's fine, but then they are credit card churners. I try to focus on videos to improve optimization on spend.

    • @JakeBroe

      I did the math on a scratch piece of paper and there honestly is not. The $95 annual fee hinders it too much when it goes up against a 3x no annual fee cash back card like the Wells Fargo Propel. People still might want to use the CSP because it is a Visa and has travel protections, but the annual fee and the low 2x multipliers makes this card a net loss for users against either no annual fee cards or the CSR.

      The Chase cards can be downgraded into either the Chase Freedom or Chase Freedom Unlimited. Both have no AF. Downgrades can only occur after you've had the card for one year (i.e. after the second annual fee posts).

    Jake. the only people who should be getting this card are people who travel and who travel regularly. If you do (and you do it for work and get reimbursed which is even better..) this card's EFFECTIVE annual fee is 550-300-60 = 190. People who travel regularly are GOING to use the Doordash credit because Doordash, even if it doesn't work in their home city, will most likely work in whatever city they're traveling to. Also, the Amex Gold card has a 10.00 per month DINING credit on Grubhub. This is also something thencan use when traveling (and getting reimbursed). They can pocket these credits and/or use them towards the annual fee. This card essentially only went up 40 bucks. It's therefore, still worth it. The people who are whining about the fee going up were either struggling to make the 300 credit or shouldn't have it to begin with as they aren't travelers. There are other cards for them. Even in the example you gave (3k for year for travel) is STILL too low of travel spending.

      I don't have either Freedom card. I am locked out of Chase for a while, lol

      Do you think it makes sense to get the Freedom Unlimited and later upgrade to the Chase Sapphire Preferred when I can do some traveling?
      I just don't want to lose my last Chase Slot.
      I'm about to fall into the 5/24 rule.
      I'm still deciding between the Chase Bonvoy boundless or the Chase Freedom Unlimited, so I can later upgrade to the Preferred.
      Which card should I get?????
      Currently I'm holding the Chase Freedom Flex.

    I just downgraded my CSP to CFU yesterday. In my opinion the United Explorer has much better perks for the same $95 annual fee.

      I agree, for $95, you would be better off with that card.

    Did you just steal Sebby’s intro?

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  4 роки тому

      Literally half of all UA-camrs say "Hey guys, welcome back to the channel." Pretty sure that's not trademarked.

      @@JakeBroe Just so we're clear I'm only teasing you. But you did do Sebby's litle hand wave along with the "Hey guys". Just saying.......

      Hey Sebby does not have genuine videos since he just puts all business expenses on his cards. It's easy to redeem 100k in points multiple times a year (and have all these lavish trips) when it's not your money.
      Jake brings it home for us "normal" spenders.

      @@AviationDirection I'll explain to you as well, I am teasing Jake. I'm sure he watches Sebby, and everyone has their niche. His intro to this video reminded me a lot of Sebby's and I thought it was funny. Don't worry, nobody is going to be harmed or sued when this is all settled.

    The chase travel portal sucks. Travel cost more than it would if you book directly through the airline

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  4 роки тому

      Yes and no. Depends on the airline. It's always a good idea to compare a couple different websites before making a booking.

    First your math is off the effective annual fee for Sapphire Reserve is $265 not $250. You're forgetting the fact that you lose points on that $300. Secondly if you ever been in a priority pass Lounge you wouldn't value it at $10 a visit. I was in three of them in the last week and I value the sum total of that benefit at about $3. You pretty much are correct that the doordash credit is effectively worth somewhere between 15 and 25 bucks. I have a card that pays me more on dining than the sapphire Reserve so that's moot. This was a total garbage change on Chase's part and my plan is to downgrade my Sapphire Reserve to Freedom and move most of my spend to some other ecosystem.

      Freedom card is a good no annual fee option.

    Yeah but $550.00 per year! I would rather get the Amex Hilton Honors Aspire Credit Card that gives 150k Points and Diamond Status!

      Me, too, personally. I meant for this video to be a comparison just between these two for people who were dead set on get one of them.

      I have both aspire and CSP. I don’t need another priority pass from CSR.
