There’s a reason almost every program schedules FCS games-they’re valuable. I agree with you about having 7 home games, but this is largely possible only by scheduling an FCS game each year. Keep up the grind, Jake!

I would love to play @Hawaii each year in week 0 to get another home game each year. Plus, it would be awesome for recruiting.

90% of the reason BYU had the "anytime, anywhere" mentality was because they needed a tougher schedule, especially during the middle and late season when most high-caliber teams were locked down with conference play.
Now that we have a reliable and competitive conference schedule, it makes more sense to schedule 1-2 easier teams or regional teams that fans can relate to for the pre-conference games

I agree with Jacob Hatch. At the end of the day .. the fans wanna see big time matches, not easy cupcake games! Schedule big games, and let the dominoes fall where they may!

I really wish BYU would buyout the away non conference games like ECU. Those games need to be at home for the fans. Also, starting 3-0 with the non conference should be a priority every year. Only schedule Home-Home games against marquee P4 programs.

There is a reason SEC teams have such a great record, they only play 8 conference games and schedule 3 cup cakes and only 1 legitimate game a year. If you want to have a great overall record you should push for a 1 or 2 cup cakes and at least 7 home games every season. Only teams that are struggling to build recognition play on the road difficult opponents.

Until BYU is a regular contender for the Big 12 title, there is very little upside to taking on top-flight OOC games. Say you upset Oregon or whomever and then have a middling conference run…how does that help in recruiting? Also, by virtue of recruiting strength, BYU is more likely to lose that game or at least lose players to injury where that depth needs to be saved for league play.
TBH, I’d prefer to see BYU get to seven home games a year, generally only traveling OOC for home-and-home arrangements with other evenly matched P4s.
Also, I can’t forget the shameful way Tennessee and Notre Dame bought out the return trips to LES. I don’t trust top schools to fulfill their contracts in this day and age.

Would love to see at least 1 GREAT preseason game. Someone that would draw in lots of attention. Examples: Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, or Oregon. The other 2 games can be confidence games where we smash the other team.

    • @brandonl2555

Getting blown out by Texas, Ohio State, or Oregon is not a “GREAT” preseason game. At this point in the program set your sights a little lower.
I’m not saying bring in Buffalo, I’m saying bring in perennial 15-25 ranked teams. These will be teams that are probably better than BYU but you won’t walk away looking like Texas’s FCS opponent.

@@brandonl2555 Yeah, that's a great point. I'm merely worried about the risk of playing a decent team with bad branding. If we're going to play a decent team then they better have good branding otherwise it's bad all around if we lose...BUT you're right, getting a team that's very good might draw a lot of attention...BUT what's the point if we get blown out and it gives us a bad start to the season.

Unfortunately its in the best interest of BYU to keep the schedule a little weaker with a FCS, G5, Weaker P4 schedule. Either B10 and SEC wanting 8/12 spots in the playoff, BYU’s odds go down the more losses we rack up. Would hate to ruin our odds of a potential playoff bid just because we have 2 losses instead of 1 or 0. The margin of error becomes so small

  • @vegascougar

Now they're part of the cool kids club (at least until the P4 officially becomes the P2), and they should schedule accordingly, especially while they are still learning how to deal with the week-in, week-out grind of big(gish) boy conference play.

I get what you are saying from a fan perspective, But, I disagree with you.
Playing Top Programs Every Week will just leave an Injury Riddled Team. This has Been BYU’s Problem. First 5 games of the year have been top tier level leaving BYU with Major Injuries and Loosing to teams in the second half of the season that they Normally Wouldn’t, Leaving us with losses. This is Not a Recipe to win a National Championship.
For Us to Win Another National Championship, BYU Has to be Extremely Smart with How They Schedule Their Games through the Season. Giving them a better chance at Reducing the Amount of Injuries sustained and Limiting Losses.
In this Conference, we will be playing top programs during the season. Limit non Conference teams to medium, low Competition. This will give Second, third, etc, String More Playing Time and Development making our roster deeper and more experienced. This will also reduce Reps for First String and keep them Healthier and give them more time to recover from bang ups.

There is not a single thing you can point to that Arod does at a high level. He’s not a high level recruiter, play caller, communicator, or development guy.

3 games. I would like to rotate Utah State and Boise State each year. For game 2 it would be cool if we could get a rotation of Air Force-Army-Navy-Notre Dame and then game 3 is a SEC or a BIG 10 Team.

@@jeoffbenzos4959 You are very much correct Mr Jeoff. It’s a pipe dream to be sure, Air Force has refused to play BYU since BYU left the MWC. SEC and BIGX teams seam to be steering towards a format where they play each other and group of 5 teams preseason and ignore the other two power 4 conferences.
The only semi realistic one is Boise State and Utah State, though similar to whittingham not wanting to play BYU pre Big 12 the argument is there is little to achieve by playing these games and lots to lose by such emotionally driven matchups. Though from my perspective high emotion games early in the season is a chance to prepare for emotional conference games… and from a recruiting standpoint local kids typically like to prove themselves against other local kids kind of prove or disprove their rankings or recruiting snubs.
      Fan focused list for sure.

Nope. This ain't it. Every single BYU football focused youtuber, podcaster, and BYU-tv affiliated commentator was complaining about how hard our non-conference schedule was this year and "why are we shooting ourselves in the foot like this" "What are we doing to ourselves" and we're diminishing our bowl chances by scheduling too tough. It can't be both ways.
Plus, there's a huge fanbase on the west coast and California needs to be recruited. Scheduling more Pac-12 and MWC non-conference games benefits the program. Big 12 has us going to areas where it's harder for a majority of the fanbase to travel to.
Lastly, we're a traumatized fanbase, haha. We don't want cardiac cougs (or a losing record) right out of the gate. Schedule manageable games where fanbase can get to a game, we can maintain our recruiting footprint, and have momentum moving into conference play.
Agree on FCS games being a joke though.
