My Patients Are Children. Dobbs Forced Me to Leave Them Behind.

In the wake of the Dobbs decision, South Carolina banned abortion after around six weeks of pregnancy. The law does have a few exceptions, including rape and incest. Dr. Kristl Tomlin, a pediatric and adolescent gynecologist, saw what those exceptions look like in practice for young victims of rape - and she decided to leave the state. In this episode, Dr. Tomlin describes how having to involve the sheriff’s department and lawyers in her work hurt her patients, and pushed her to leave the community she loved.

We're voting on a pro-choice amendment in Florida, but it will take a 60% majority to make it state law. I did my part to restore women's rights by voting 'yes', at least in our state. Maybe Florida can become a safe haven for women searching for reproductive health care in the deep south.

Thank you Dr. Tomlin. Having integrity in the face of evil is not easy. I'm sorry you had to leave your home. I know you'd prefer to be helping South Carolinians, but you need to think about yourself and your family. At the same time, you couldn't ethically practice medicine in South Carolina. The state is intent on killing, maiming, and ruining the lives of women, girls, and their families. Idk what will fix it, short of doctors across specialties refusing to give anyone care. I can only hope that the lack of women's healthcare will push a change, if nothing else because people like the abstract idea of babies even if they hate women. Unfortunately, the situation will probably need to get very bad first.
