Glad the Modesto event went well. Oh, to have been at that first Wolfgang show. Always great to have more Shawn Phillips. The underappreciated Barry de Souza on drums there. Great player.
@@RockandRollWoman No, but I know a professor who taught those years there and a good friend who taught at the University of Michigan and when sporting events between the two schools were on I ignored them. 😉 The one at MSU taught John Rawls ‘A Theory of Justice’ and the one at University of Michigan taught American 19th century literature and was an Emily Dickinson scholar.
I first met Shawn in 1987 at a show in MPLS. 3 years after I was in the studio recording with him and with the band "Gypsy" in the same session, and I was in Heaven. Three years after that I put together a band to back him up at his 25th Anniversary show at Orchestra Hall in MPLS, with J. Peter Robinson on the Steinway. "Bright White" was one of the songs we played that night and the crowd went Nuts for it! I'll be playing this song once again with this wonderful performer in about 3 weeks. He is a friend, and I have absolutely NO regrets about that. Thank You Leland Sklar...!
According to the internet in Nov 1969 the Winterland concert was Roland Kirk, Wolfgang, Isaac Hayes and Led Zeppelin, tickets were a whopping 3 dollars
I remember those early San Francisco bands in 1966 that played at The Longshoremen’s Hall and before the Fillmore and Avalon Ballroom. Grateful Dead / Big Brother And The Holding Company / The Loading Zone, they all played January 22, 1966 at the The Longshoremen’s Hall. ✌
HI Lee, loved the video of the cars up in Modesto. Always love those. Borrowing a phrase from James from Steamroller., "If I may be be so bold" ...I hope you'll give yourself a chance to get some rest before hitting the road for Lyle. You haven't stopped in weeks with books, yard work, probably other stuff around the house and a full day of one on one's tomorrow. Don't head for the airport totally exhausted my friend. Take care Lee!
Hey Barry! Saw on Facebook that you are now in Germany! Right now we are the same: if people over there talk to you or to me… I wouldn’t understand anything. People speak a strong dialect over there. But delicious food…. 🍺🍻
I loved the Bright White section of Shawn's upcoming documentary series. Really enjoyed your interviews, as well. Lots of great stuff, you're gonna love the series when it comes out!
As soon as this song started, I remembered it from back in the day! I used to love singing along with it! Thanks for sharing it with us, and I'm glad your trip was a success! Hope you get some good, solid rest soon! ♥
😎 Modesto The Immediate Family Screening and Book 📖 signing. . .thank you for fantastic 'feedback' and for Shawn Phillips 💜 . . .bass line changes so familiar 😀
Greetings, Lee and everyone! The antique car showcase at Modesto was a gift of eye candy. I know a guy who used to restore old cars like those. Parts are getting difficult to find in the case of his 100-year-old Chrysler and Fords of a similar vintage. That these vehicles are mobile is a credit to their owners' tenacity and resourcefulness.
Hi Winston, It also helps if you have an access to a machine shop and skilled machinists to fabricate new parts for those that could be replaced. Finding existing parts is even more difficult as it is to restore a car to an original manufactured state.
I know my uncle Gary would love the car show. He has restored quite a few, and his wife, my aunt started restoring some of her own as well. They had fun with that, getting their cars ready and then road tripping them to the shows. 😊 They're the only two people from both sides of my family able to maintain a steady sleep clock. They're up at 4am and asleep at 8pm.
Hi Mr Sklar, your friend Mr Philips, was one of my early influencers musically, in the film Lost Horizon. So now, I get to say thank you sincerely. You may not see this but I am grateful to you all the same.
Thanks for the shoutout to Astrud Gilberto. Nothing further need be said about her artistic contributions to the world, but it is worth mentioning that she was also a genuinely nice person.
Lee, without fan boying out, I gotta say I have the utmost respect for your musical legacy, and another thing thats obvious is your full circle. I have a sneaking suspicion you wouldnt expect what you wouldnt give of yourself. I find that admirable. I wish you good tidings and just to let you know, i got my ears on. thank you buddy
You were right, Shawn Phillips was the perfect choice for this Friday night video. After work THIS is what I was looking forward to seeing... Excited actually 😁 I am fortunate to have seen him in concert twice. I am grateful and honored to have met him personally when he did a show at the now defunct Detroit venue "The Soup Kitchen". He is an good guy, very down to earth and incredibly talented. Thanks for mentioning the numbers of the other 2 you did about him.I will check them out ♥️🎶👍
👍👍. I know that song!!!!! I'm sure that they played it on the old KNX fm! He has such a great sound! A lot easier to pick out some of the details than on the radio in the old family console stereo.
Nice to hear the Wolfgang reference. I'm in regular touch with Bryn and Sally Haworth, and recently Bryn was kind enough to write an endorsement for my first-ever book.
I had one of Shawn's lps in the early 70s...it was lots of acoustic 12 string guitar...my old bandmate went to high school with him...I'd heard he has lived in South Africa for decades...not sure if that's true but someone told me that once.
How I was introduced to Shawn Phillips was when he sung the title song to Lost Horizon. The movie was widely panned, but the Burt Bacharach & Hal David soundtrack was first rate. When you head out, safe travels with Lyle Lovett.
