The first thing ill do after this , is download these albums. I was only ten when these came out, so i missed their release. ( Iknow , just a kid) ha ha . Where has all this awesome music gone? wonderful.
Thank you Lee, for bringing us along. I had picked up your vlogs here and there. This year, after finding myself back in NE Indiana, from most of my life in rural Florida, I picked up on your backstage tour of Shipshewana, I got hooked. I loved the Florida backstage views, especially Tallahassee's Ruby Diamond Hall. Thanks for bringing me back home, in my mind, anyhow. Looking forward to 2025! This record you played us today, I really love. I've saved a playlist of it. It will be on regular rotation. Thanks again.
When I listen to The Section I always think how good of a lead player Kootch is. He is so established as one of the best rhythm players but he’s also a really great lead player with a great tone and such a tasty vibrato.
When in Maine at an antique/thrift shop I came across a Section 33 record - the one with the fork going thru a piece of pie. I should have grabbed it! Damn it! These three records arrived around the same time as Wired and Blow By Blow - and I’m surprised these didn’t take off as well as they could’ve. You guys put out what in my opinion is a high quality product.
It was wonderful hearing your early work, and even better seeing your reaction. There are few things more enjoyable than making music with your friends. Thanks Lee.
This is absolutely awesome and I could hear the cowbell in the first track. Really makes me want to watch Zabriskie Point and other great 70s movies. Gave me great memories of some later Weather Report and even Emerson, Lake and Palmer. ‘Far out’ this is phenomenal Lee and thank you again.🇦🇺🙏
@@RockandRollWoman Wow that is a very small world and here I am thinking l am the only one who knew of the movie. I still own a copy of the soundtrack.
This is a great listen. Such fun/joy in everyone's playing. And Craig's acoustic piano playing has such a "warmth" to it. By the way, thank-you for explaining the reason for the album's cover artwork. 🙂
Leland...You have inspired me to start this kind of band....Funk/Fusion is a bag I always wanted to do....The toughest thing in Connecticut is to find like minded musicians, that are not involved in 4 other bands, as many are here.I was doing that myself, but at 73,I decided to go NUTS,and play what I want to play. Some people have already showed some interest....There are venues to play, and I have 2 good agents..So I'm moving forward.Happy New Year.
This brought back memories of going to Tower Records in Ginza in 1975, when I was living in Tokyo. What an experience. I didn't go to any concerts when I was there. It would have been a real kick to see The Section in Japan! If time travel is ever perfected, I'll do it. Smilin' Ed really made me want to get up and dance, but I can't do that with this darned air cast on. Tincture of time is being applied...
The comments are turned off for this album on UA-cam. Discogs has your albums ("The Section" (THE MELLOW MAFIA) with a pie on the cover, "Forward Motion" with the live photo, "Fork It Over") and a great photo of you (all black hair and beard) and the others in the band. Was Michael Brecker on the album with the pie on the cover? The "Fork It Over" album isn't available in the U.S. Germany has it. "Forward Motion" is available in the U.S. for $5.00. "The Section - The Section" album is available from the U.K. for about $16. All great tunes, Lee! You guys were on the leading edge of jazz fusion. You guys surely fit well touring with Mahavishnu! WOW! You're tops, Lee! Russ Kunkel is cookin' too! His drumming rivaled the best jazz fusion drummers of the day! Thanks for some great music from way back! (whoever listens to this great music, make sure to use phones, to get the best sound and appreciate Lee's excellent bass work) Thank you, Lee!
Andy, fill me in. I know that the last word spoken on "Mud Slide Slim" ( the song) is "Kootchetoo" (apparently in reference to Kortchmar). What I don't know is as much about the Troubadour material. Where does it pop up there?
Hi Lee. You guys sure sounded good as the Section! Really tasty music. Looks like if we do another book signing it will be sometime maybe in January? You've got a lot going on so if its meant to be it will happen. A good Hanukkah to you and Mrs. Sklar. Take care my friend!! Bob Love
Loving these! I went shopping for Section recordings, but they are pretty pricey. The Peace-Love bass was still your main tool, did you use others? Also, I'd guess that pedals were used for different effects. Lastly, an albatross is a majestic bird. I'll bet a buck that was just a brain fart on your part. Love and Thanks ❤👍❤👍
This is the jam. 😊That effect is pretty fun and the funnier toward the end part with how he really stretches it on the funky space growly sounds. 😂 Then Russ really coming through with lots of cool drum rolling is a treat❣️
Did the copy of this album I sent you find a home somewhere? It was the one that had a label that indicated it was in a library at some point. It was sent about three years ago. Thanks for the music!
Lee, as an artist you never seem to be critical of your playing. Does that ever enter the picture? Take for example Jeff Porcaro, he seemed very critical of his playing saying only one track was really good, Steely Dan's FM. That is crazy, but he was hyper-critical of his work. Nice to hear Russ play out on Bullet Train and Forward Motion...prog-like influence.
The only time I ever played in a band playing this kind of funk fusion was when I was in my late teens. The band was called Semanon (Seh-muh-non) which meant “no names” backwards, and we were unfortunately not reaching for the best of our talents. I always try to do so, but they were critical of me for the fact that I had long hair, wore hippie clothes and posses a strain of musicality that branches out past the boundaries of what they wanted to play. That constraint has repeated itself with most bands I’ve played with since that time in the late 90s, and it gets on my nerves. I would’ve preferred if we were at the same musical tier as the musicians you’ve showcased here. Leland, everyone needs to be reaching for help and for the means to make positive change the reality. It’s bugging me just as badly as the experiences I’ve had with the aforementioned bands I’ve played with that people in the western world are becoming increasingly apathetic and simply permitting extremism from the far right to cripple the country. People are targeting me for saying that this past presidential election outcome is to be dismissed and that it has been reduced to the equivalent of purchasing a flatscreen TV at a department store or wholesaler, but nobody is doing anything or saying anything to reverse my opinion. The last thing the US needs to be as a nation without a leader as it was before.
