Well... As a plug-in hybrid, this may work okay, but the way I see it, as soon as you have an empty battery, you have an ordinary petrol car, nothing else. I once took a ride in a Skoda PHV (completely same plaftorm as VW), of course its owner did not take the time to charge it, so it was basically offering the same consumption as my old Opel Astra (the car I had before my Prius) which used to eat 8-8.5 litres of gas in 100 km. I was surprised, and in a bad way. Yes, if you use it as intended, and charge it, then the consumption will be a lot less, but a Toyota plug-in can work as a self-charging hybrid whenever the plug-in charge runs out, and will still consume a lot less than an ordinary petrol car.
I think, and I may be wrong, but the main difference is that the Toyota HSD has two motor-generators built into it. So it becomes capable of being a parralel hybrid (which is basically same as the drivetrain explained here), but it can also act like a serial hybrid or even combine the two principles by splitting the power of the ICE between directly to the wheels and to the MG1 or MG2 to generate electricity to power the other one. Whichever is the most efficient on a system level.
I don't see an opportunity for this if you only have one motor-generator unit. Then it can either generate electricity to store in the battery (but this will have a power need from the ICE if not done during regenerative braking), or it can draw electricity to help the ICE, and there is no other option available.
I hope I was not totally wrong above, but I think this is what makes the difference. Additionally, the planetary gearset which acts like a continuously variable transmission without actually being one, is genius. Basically they eliminated all the coupling parts of an ordinary transmission, you do not need a clutch (furthermore, you do not need a double clutch...), you do not need all those fine moving parts of an automatic transmission. It is basically unbreakable, unlike the DSG where the clutches will wear off, the automatism will also reach the end of its lifecycle before the car will do, you have an expensive flywheel, etc. And also, a continuously variable ratio is always better than a fixed-gear transmission, it's just so embedded in our minds that cars have to constantly rev up and down while accelerating that some of us cannot accept otherwise, but it's not a technological thing, it's just human mind. So introducing and pushing the e-CVT was a very rational decision again, one more point for the HSD.
In the end everyone can buy the car they want, just go ahead if you have the correct finances in the background, it's not worth wrecking yourself in the progress. I don't want to influence anyone particularly, but I leave this here as my thoughts and opinion, maybe it will help someone in the upcoming months if they have to make a decision.

I appreciate your arguments but while Toyota's eCVTs hybrids are much more efficient, that doesn't render other hybrids useless or less efficient than standard petrol cars. On my daily city driving which is mixed traffic (about 7 km's traffic jam and 20 km's free driving) from a 2.0 petrol Kia hatchback to a 2.0 hybrid petrol Kia sedan (which weights ~300kgs more and has 50 more hp) the difference in power consumption is from 11,5 l/100 km to 7,5 l/100 km, a huge win for the hybrid.. it's true that the electric range is very limited and the petrol engine kicks in very often just to recharge the batteries, but the fuel economy is still better since even an Atkinson cycle petrol engine has only about 40% efficiency and in traffic jams engine wear is high. Personally hybrid choice is also a matter of car size, because big sedans like Toyota Camry were not available in Europe before 2017 while Kia had the Optima here since 2013

hey excuse me those cars have generators like toyotas hybrids I mean that in the toyota engine there is like a generator on one side of the engine and that generator turns these cars of other brands also has those rotating generators like those of the toyota hybrid
