Different classic NES consoles can have slightly different palettes. On top of that CHX42's screen is over-saturated, maybe from the capture hardware being used or from misconfigured gamma correction. Tecate's screen is more like what this game generally looks like on original hardware.

@@justdave9610 in the NES metroid a death takes you back to where the password would put you (which is always the last elevator you took) the method of 'saving' in Metroid is to actually get this password by dying or accessing it via the P2 controller in the pause menu. Since these passwords are largely always the same it's treated the same as dying in a modern game and just reloading from the checkpoint
