Original story: Obsidian Entertainment's Pentiment is the first of Xbox's four in-house titles to move over to other platforms, and its recent release has brought about a baffling discrepancy between the Xbox Series X and PS5 releases.
As you can see in the video up above (and via other sources) Pentiment appears to be running at a muchhigher frame rate on PS5 than it does on Xbox Series X. The PS5 version seemingly pushes 120Hz playback when used with a compatible display - the Xbox version only runs at 60Hz in this same case.
We're not sure what's causing it as there doesn't seem to be a manual 120FPS toggle anywhere, and we'd imagine Obsidian will spot and fix this. We must admit though, we'd like the fix to include a 120Hz option on both systems rather than just limiting the PS5 version to 60FPS!
We haven't had access to the game on PlayStation 5 here at PX so we can't confirm the difference ourselves, but this certainly seems to be happening - it's a curious one! We'll keep our eye on things in the coming days and hope for some sort of explanation from Obsidian.

Just got back into gaming and snagged a ps3 super slim, 2 controllers and 16 games (gta5, god of war 5 pack, cod 3&4, a couple MKs) for $75.

I have one and I don't dare play Gran Turismo 5 on it. The thermal paste is probably hard as a rock (it was on my 360 Elite) and it appears that the GPU starts getting too hot. The graphics start artifacting after about 20 minutes with that game.

Most servers are vacant. Especially cod. Your better off playing cod on Xbox series X. It's a money saver and definitely cheaper on games now

The other reason for the update was to update the Blu-Ray Security Keys, so you could still watch BD movies on it

@robertonline6543 I wish for that, too... but the movie studios wouldn't agree to that. Another thing, too... those security keys are just to decript any features the disc has to connect to the internet. It doesn't really interfere with watching a movie at this point.

My ps3 has been connected to my main tv since I got it. And still is, along with ps5, xbox one s, and switch. The games on ps3 are still awesome, and play great on my ps3 slim. I have all the exclusives from that generation, and a few others. I installed the update, and noticed my theme changed. I had the last of us theme, and now it’s a standard theme, which may just be because of the update, I did not check if it was still there. Played sly Cooper for a while, needs a part five…..
my os4 is in the bedroom with my 360. The Wii and ps2 are in a box, and can be plugged in easily, to play those games. It is cool to get new stuff, but we don’t have to shun th old stuff, it’s still fun

Totally agree PS3 is an amazing system. Incredible SINGLE PLAYER GAMES!! the PS5 has nothing that truly compares to that gen. From Motorstorm, Uncharted, TLOU, Killzone, Deadspace, Split second, pure. I could go on, what the hell happened. Openworld, multi player obsession happened that's what!!

There are quite a few game that aren't available on the PS3 to download meaning you have to find a disc to buy. For example Driver San Francisco, I have the original disc but also have a PS3CFW to play a backup copy to save the disc. Lots of life left for the PS3, especially the backward compatible original one rather than reliant on emulators.

FYI, the main reason that sony still updates the ps3 is to update the blu ray encryption keys, stopping cfw is only a temporary side effect, since 1: You typically don't even need to update your cfw to play online and 2: New cfw builds usually come pretty soon after an update. It really doesn't take up any of their resources to keep the ps3 functional as a blu ray player, and I'm pretty sure they will do the same for the PS4
Sony didnt block modding with this update, they just updated bluray keys as they have been doing in the last few updates. But nothing changed in terms modding.

We need a PS3 remake. A PS3 Pro or call it PS3.5 where it runs everything at 1080p unlocked fps. Or they can even use AI to upscale games to 4k 120 fps. That'd be amazing. Truly a miracle.

For some reason my PS3 lost it's ability to even connect to the Internet some years ago. Even though the system knew there was an update available to it, it just can't connect to a network anymore. So it confuses me every time I hear there's a new update when it seems Sony pulled it's ability to even connect to PSN.
Several things:
1) You can always update via USB.
2) Your WiFi antenna may be disconnected.
3) When you attempt to log in to PSN via PS3, you now need a special pass code generated either via the website or the app. It's recommended to stay signed in after using it.
The system software also updates Blu Ray keys.

The PS3 patches are just to update the AACS encryption keys for the BluRay player. The Blu-Ray players would not be able to play newer disks if they didn't update this.
If i was gonna jailbreak a PS3 i would buy another and jailbreak it instead of my Main PS3.

I use PS3 hen. It actually functions with the Internet on so I can transfer games from my PC directly to the PS3 hard drive and a few other little features.

Can you factory reset your PS3 if you've done the update to be able to mod it?
the patch is to update the bluray certificate, i dont think it was to block hackers as updated cfw was out within a couple of weeks. its old tech and sony has moved on its just for the few people still watching bluray movies on their ps3
Any chance this update fixes the clock battery problem? When if the clock battery dies, you can't play the games due to the achievements system blocking them from loading as it can't verify a server validated time / date for new achievements. I know they fixes this on the PS4.
You should be able to make it so even if they try to force an update the device can not connect to any outside network via wi-fi. All you should have to do is open your ps3 and disconnect the 2 wi-fi cables. There black and white. You should be able to find a picture online easy.
If you turn off automatic updates, they turn off. Sony is not forcing any updates onto PS3 owners.
My jailbroken PS3 would force me to update it otherwise I couldn’t use certain features which I frequently use. Had to format my SSD and reinstall the PS3 software to the latest version and it was good to go. Sucks that I can’t jailbreak my PS3 anymore.
You will have wait some time for toolset to be updated with the newer firmware. But it should not take that long as these guys are pretty fast with newer firmware updates

I for one AM VERY HAPPY if this latest update does indeed prevent hackers/modders from doing their thing in my favorite game which is COD Black Ops zombies Kino map. Yes we PS3 ONLINE players DO exist dude.

It doesn't prevent tho. It just delays it for like a month tops + there's tools to bypass it. I love jailbreaking my ps3 and simultaneously hate hackers on bo1 lol. So I feel that. Wish they'd re-release the game or give PS backwards compatibility for it like Xbox so you can't "hack" the newer Gen therefor no hackers

By keeping your PS3 on a WiFi network for some reason UA-cam still works and even on the Xbox 360 and Wii U.
There are tons of people that still play ps3 online. Trophy hunters especially. I have over 100 physical ps3 games in my collection. And a lot more online servers are still active than you might realize. Glad I found out about the patch though cause Im going to jailbreak my other ps3 due to some games basically unobtainable due to rarity and price.

Folks are still playing Socom online. On the PS3 forum I joined on FB, I see folks still active with there ps3.
Just dont log into PSN and switch autoupdate to off. CFW or HEN is the best way to use PS3 ATM. Game patches can be safely downloaded without PSN account, even with CFW. No need to get rid of wi fi.

One very good reason to have a connected PS3 is for trophy sync. And the update was a required renewal of the blu-ray license and update of the blu-ray software.

Need to know more, though a shame can't use a card anymore. I still have Ragnarok Odyssey Ace on there and miss some DLC from the vita for it else if I can't use the PS3 version/have to start all over again and that's not fun after I already beaten a nasty boss very far ahead
Dont you know that blue ray players need updates every so often just to update blue ray encryption keys? At least sony is supporting the ps3 so people can still watch new movies on the system. Fixing custom firmware exploits is such a minor issue since modders will eventually find a way around it
Heard a bunch of people getting update loops and error codes with this update (v4.90) and its supposedly bricking consoles. So do what he suggests, and disable your wifi and do not update for sure, that is what i will be doing

Picked up Dianlo 3 and Skyrim for $5 at a thrift store, simply love those games, I run PS3hen on mine just to copy the games from disc to preserve my physicals , I received the update message but I just ignore it, but you can still update disc games, Duablo was 22mb, and Skyrim 109mb 😅

Cool video. I just picked up a PS3 with 15 games for 50 bucks. I own a PS2 and a PS4 and the priece was really funny so I went for it without hesitation. After I've factory reset it, I've found out that the controller doesn't work on bluetooth, only on cable. The PS3 is unable to find any bluetooth devices. I'm unable to pair it. Any suggestions? Can the chip be gone? The wifi works normally. Thanks.
Is it possible? That maybe as we stream the PS3 games do you think they’ll turn on online multiplayer? if so, would you be able to play Classics? You’re keeping the PS3 alive for the merge?? or maybe they just keep the PS3 alive for potential subscriptions.
There a lot of games that are not able to go online but there is still PlayStation home and possibly other games that are I’m happy that it is for my psp and my vita that’s main reason that I’m still on it I also have about 39 games for it and I do play them all

They are only updating the ps3 because of the Blu-ray movies encrypting keys, if they don’t some newer movies won’t be playable on ps3.

actually the ps3 update its for having newer blueray disk keys, without it, you wouldnt be able to play newer bluerays on the ps3, the "patching out exploit" part its just because the community has to patch the cfw and hfw again in the new ofw but it was not the actual intention of the update

I was never really into Playstation 3 games. I’m either playing PS2 (soft modded) games or Xbox 360 games. My Playstation 3 has been collecting dust for the last few years.
I don’t have any game subscriptions either. I don’t play that game.
I wish that they didn't take away the ability to connect the ps vita to the PS 3 along with the music features that let you read your own music cds
You can still rip CDs to the console and edit the Metadata yourself, the only thing that died was the Metadata source servers.

As far as I'm aware the PS3 patch was keys for blu ray decription. Nothing to do with patching exploits.

PS3 will work offline but no way to download games anymore if you don't update.
Well, there isn't really a problem. If you have CFW or HEN installed, you can easily spoof the system software so it appears you are on the latest hardware. If you have OFW, then just update, this update doesn't block any official features.

I still use my PS3,I wish they would bring back the updated Madding and the NCAA game's.
I play COD MW2/3 everyday and record clips to make montages the game has at least 10 lobbies going on during the week on the ps3.
They should make a PlayStation PS3 and bring it up today with its features. You used to be able to put any disc in and it would play easily download any film surf the net. I know you can surf the net on PS5 but you have to go all around the houses to do so. And also make it compatible with PS1 PS2 PS3 PS4 PS5 and call it PS6 how great that would be so you can play your old games.
If they can design the PS6 like that, it would be huge. Also Sony needs to bring themes to the PS5 and I think it would be so cool if the PS6 could have an option to where you can customize the startup so it’s not just the default version of that console. Why not have options to where you can pick between PS1-PS5 startups as well? That would be so cool and something different too. Maybe they could with the default startup provide an option where you can choose between different colors as well. This would all be a perfect mixture of integrating the old with the new.
I never gave up my two PS3 gen ones. I've got a ton of great games for it that I still enjoy playing. My PS4 bit the dust last year, so I replaced it with the disc version PS5 and all my PS4 games work just fine on it.

I bought my first PS3 in January of 2020. It was all great, until lockdowns hit and people got their government checks. They spent them on any consoles they could find and whatever games were good for them. So PS3 games went from being 99¢ each to some games I'd bought cheap going for $150 on eBay. I'm nearly at 700 PS3 games, it's a good time at the moment because rarer games have made their way back to shops for more reasonable prices now that the games people bought up because of the lockdown are getting sold off again. And I love the fact that there's no region locking anymore. I've got PS3 games from all over the world that I've randomly come across.
Me, playing my A01 delidded, with CFW and increased fan speed 😎👍🏻. I avoid 4.91 like the plague, I’ll always play on 4.90 Evilnat with Webman and Multiman!

There's been a few PS3 updates recently. Shows there's still a lot of use/interest in the console. You'd think Sony would find a way to make PS3 games playable on the PS5 without shitty cloud streaming. I don't expect it to happen overnight but if they gave us some sort of statement on PS3 - PS5 backward compatibility it'd be really appreciated. Hopefully we'll get some news about that someday.
ps3 emulation isnt even 100% on pc. its hardware was very complex so its hard to emulate. in some modes its still the most powerfull prosser. its probly one of the reasions streaming it sucks so bad. its eyther a in house emulator or using real ps3 hardware.
