I couple of fun facts: Daft Punk cite this movie as one of the inspirations for their Random Access Memories album. Edgar Wright is apparently a huge fan of the movie and cast Paul Williams for a role in Baby Driver, because of this. The late Kentaro Miura, creator of Berserk, based the design for Femto on the look of the Phantom of Paradise.
Del Toro also loves this movie to death. He post pictures of his little collection for the film on his twitter and it makes me happy that cool people appreciate this film.
My Chemical Romance also took inspiration, apparently. Some of the lyrics to Phantom's Theme are referenced in "Sleep" from The Black Parade, and Gerard Way did a really cool drawing of Winslow a while back!
I got into this movie around the same time as I started watching Rocky Horror. I never understood why one is so obscure and one is a legendary cult hit.
It's actually because Rocky Horror and Phantom were shown together for a while back-to-back as a double feature on the midnight movies circuit. The audience found Rocky Horror more engaging, in terms of campy sing-along quality; but also because Phantom was shown second, and most people don't stick around for the second feature, so most audiences tended to clear out after Rocky Horror.
@@nl3064 Not only that but there was the whole audience participation element that grew up around the movie where people brought their own props, rice, water guns, toast, etc. and developed lines that responded to what was happening on screen. It became a whole thing that you wouldn't really want with Phantom because it's just a good movie without all that stuff.
@@ericisprobablyfullofshit7797 precisely, that's why I said they found it more engaging (as in they liked to engage with it in such a way); and as a side note, I read that apparently in...Winnipeg, or maybe Regina? Some Canadian city, there's actually a big cult following around Phantom of the Paradise, so that they even have an annual screening where people show up dressed as the Phantom and other characters from that movie as well.
@@nl3064 Yeah, it's Winnipeg. They love that movie there. Even though I'm from the States I'm starting to think that Winnipeg might be my spiritual home. 🤭
I love this movie, Beef is a beautiful creature and Winslow is an agent of chaos. I watched this with a group of friends, and every time Winslow runs in the film, we would die laughing
I saw this movie when it was in theaters and absolutely LOVED it. The performances are first-rate, and the songs are great (written by Paul Williams, duh, how could they be anything but). I watch it whenever I need a boost. So well done! So underrated.
I was born in 1984 and this is my earliest memory of me loving a movie. My parents said that when I was 2 I couldn’t help but be glued to the tv when this was on. Also that I would ask for them to put it on constantly. Through the years I still put it on. To this day it is my favorite movie of all time mainly for nostalgic reasons. Fantastic video BTW!
This is my all time musical!!!!!!!! I love it so much!!!!! I was literally going through channels one night and came across this movie and fell in love!!!!
I saw it yesterday in a movie theater for the first time and I was soo delighted I watch it. It is a masterpiece, a roller coaster of emotions (horror, thriller, comedy). And what a soundtrack! The colors… those silver teeth, that crazy, suffering, betrayed eye that looks at you from behind the mask… I can’t stop thinking about it. This is great cinema!
I discovered this film 2 years ago, never heard of it. Once I saw some of the frenetic shots and heard the amazing music especially the "Phantoms' Theme" (one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard) I was hooked and ordered it on blu-ray.
from all the wonderful songs in this soundtrack, the one i like the most is The hell of it, absolutelly slaps and the lyrics relate nicely with the plot of the movie
I've never seen this but for some reason remembered the ads for it ("he sold his soul for rock n roll") yesterday, then this video came up purely by chance.
I saw PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE at the theatre when it was first released, and was totally gobsmacked! I’ve owned the VHS tape, I still have the DVD and the CD soundtrack. I’ve written about it in Scary Monsters magazine. For decades, I’ve said that if ROCKY HORROR didn’t exist, PHANTOM would have taken on a different life and filled the void. The look of the film, the sets, the colour scheme, the costumes (especially the mask!), the script, everything comes together in a way that films rarely do these days. Then, there’s the music: The best thing about the film is that Paul Williams wrote the music, and the worst thing about it is that Paul Williams wrote the music. Make of that what you will.
I just baught this on DVD. Its been at least 15 years since I've watched it in its entirety. LOVE IT!!! Your review is spot on. I couldn't agree more! Great job!👍
An underrated classic! I love this movie. When it comes to the original novel and most adaptations of it, I think Christine should either end up with Raoul or better yet, ditch both men and go on to have a fabulous career instead. But this movie? I'm like, "Winslow and Phoenix forever." Not only are they a genuinely sweet take on the Phantom/Christine pairing, they're presented as soulmates who are so in love they reincarnate throughout the ages to find each other again and again, which is a romance trope I absolutely adore.
I watched this movie back in the 90s as a kid several times. After looking back after 30 years and I do agree that this movie is a classic. I think this movie was 10 years ahead of its time because Rock wasn't as big during the Disco era.
I'm from Winnipeg and grew up in the 70's. Yup...seen that! I assume you know that Winnipeg is hosting the 50th anniversary event. 50?!? WOW!!! ONE Correction... While Paul Williams did write the songs, the (mood) music score was written by George Aliceson Tipton, who is credited at the end of the movie. Mind you,I have heard that the wedding scene music was written by Paul. Bit of confusion with that. I remember seeing Phantom... with my siblings, when it came out. After the end, I swore I'd NEVER see it again. It totally grossed me out. I must've gotten over it though since I've since seen it....I can't count how many times after.
This film along with "Rosemary's Baby" tried to pull your coat to what the entertainment business is all about ! It's amazing that folks don't get it 👿 !
I heard about this movie and few years ago and it always sat in the back of my mind, but I didn't get around to watching it until a few weeks ago, and I am so glad I did because it's just one of those movies that hits so many beats that it feels like it was made specifically for me
Bless ya for giving this film some limelight. I agree with practically everything you said about it, especially that there's something for everyone in it. This has been one of my absolute favorite horror movies for a while and it's often overlooked in favor of RHPS (no shade towards that movie and it's fans).
My favorite movie ever! Own the VHS and the phono record since I was 7. Def an hidden 💎 “oh this is too much, I guess you’re suppose to be the devil” 👹
If this film was as successful as Rocky Horror, it would’ve gotten a Broadway production (with a full soundtrack and new songs) and a remake based on the Broadway musical, similar to Hairspray. Rocky Horror was initially a Broadway musical which helped it A LOT. I wonder if Andrew Lloyd Webber would be pissed if this came out on Broadway though.
One of my favourite movies of all time.... Hell of a film worth repeat viewing for the love story, the banging music and the amazing acting ( mostly). Go and watch it right now !
I am not a fan of musicals whatsoever, but Phantom of the Paradise is my favorite musical, and one of my favorite films of all time. (fun fact, Daft Punk was also extremely inspired by the movie to make music)
Rocky is much better than phantom. That's why everyone has heard of Rocky. Phantom is ok, best part of it is Jessica Harper. Still prefer her doing Richard O'Brien tunes ala shock treatment.
I cannot wait to rent this! But I do find it odd that you should downcast capitalism. After all, you get paid by a less than fair corporation called UA-cam. Don't you think it would be fair if many of your viewers were given to lesser channels? Or will you claim that you worked for those? (And you did, so they are rightly awarded to you.) And what about the money you make from this channel? Would it not be fair to give some, indeed most of that money to others who are less fortunate? Capitalism is FAR from perfect, but it is the best system so far- or would you prefer the system I formerly spoke of, known as socialism? Careful what you wish for friend- it can always get worse. Regardless, I shall feed the capitalist machine by giving you a watch. You have good taste... in music.

it’s so interesting to think about how this inspired berserk’s griffith/femto’s look, so iconic
Oh, so it wasn’t only me who was thinking about Griffith XD

The movie that birthed the Daft Punk we know and love today. I love this movie
Thank you for appreciating this fantastic movie. It is one of my all-time favourites
The closing track "The Hell of it" has been one of my all time faves since I caught this on a VHS tape in the 80's

so thankful you made this video. my dad showed me it as a kid and i’ve been quietly obsessed my whole life. cheers!
Wait a minute, Mr. Puttermen. . . And Paul also wrote Old Fashion Love Song by Three Dog Night.
Dude nobody ever talks about this masterpeice!!! I love rocky horror and everything mabye even more but this movie is just so fucking amazing!!!
This is my all time musical!!!!!!!! I love it so much!!!!! I was literally going through channels one night and came across this movie and fell in love!!!!
Same ,exactly like that.
Always loved the whole “Swan”-“Satan” thing

Coincidentally, I watched this for the first time only a couple days before finding this channel. This film deserves more attention.
Yesssss I’m here for any phantom of the paradise content😤 death records forever
Absolutely going to watch this later!!
Thanks for the recommendation. Just saw it on Blu-ray. Loved it. Thank you! ❤️🦊🍍
This should have been the cult musical from the 70s! Beats RHPS by a mile!
Never heard of this before definitely will check it out
Absolutely love this movie! Definitely my 2nd favorite horror musical, just behind the original Wicker Man (yes I'm completely serious)
I just baught this on DVD. Its been at least 15 years since I've watched it in its entirety. LOVE IT!!! Your review is spot on. I couldn't agree more! Great job!👍

I've always loved this film!
Another beauty is:
'Billy the kid and the green baize vampire'
I need to rewatch it sometime. Such a crazy movie.
This one was actually the first obvious Phantom adaptation that I saw, and it's what got me really into it! Still a favorite of mine!

Paul Williams and his sweet ass hair. How can you go wrong?
Carburetors man, that's what life is all about.
will have to check it out! thanks for highlighting it
paul also did bugsy malone the singing parts.
My dear, you have presented a truly introduction to that beloved Galaxy Brain Paul Williams. Well done.

it's not really horror but the thumbnail made me think of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, that was a wild ride of a film

Its interesting seeing this movie pick up traction recently. I don't like it as much as Rocky Horror Picture Show but its pretty good on its own
One of my favorite movies of all time!
My favorite movie hands down
One of my faves, love the soundtrack. Paul Williams is great
thank you
Where is this movie streaming?
It’s not my fault it wasn’t a hit in 1974. I saw it 5 or 6 times then.
0:05 what was that movie
It’s a Japanese horror/comedy called House (1977)
WTF Somebody Super Like You is easily the best song in the movie.
Truthfully i see it as a drama film, instead of a comedy but that's just me.
ok the real hot take tho was calling sweeney todd a mediocre movie
I prefer Rocky Horror Picture Show, but this one is really cool and solid too!
It’s a movie inspired by/a variant of phantom of the opera right? Or am I dum
Any one see how this movie influenced "BERSERK" ?
The manga?
Ok. Dawg!
#ReleaseTheSwanSongCut would like to see the unedited original version without the Death Records change!
Rocky is much better than phantom. That's why everyone has heard of Rocky. Phantom is ok, best part of it is Jessica Harper. Still prefer her doing Richard O'Brien tunes ala shock treatment.

This movie is on Comet right now. Dear lord it sucks so bad
