Thomas rarely does interviews. And almost never gets on camera outside of films or tv, so seeing him hang out and do this, is really special. Just shows how much he loves these guys and The Expanse fans. I really appreciate that!
It is amazing that a writer and a star are so enthusiastic about their series that they want to talk about it this way and engage with fans. It seems like everyone involved with The Expanse has a sense of working on something worthwhile, and they are loving it.
I was bizarrely thrilled to learn he had a cat. And reads Joe Hill. I adore Tom Jane, and find Miller to be one of the most engaging characters to hit the screen in decades. (I'm vaguely uneasy about Jane's political leanings, but continue to love him as an actor and genuine sci-fi, comics fan.)
This is awesome, and I can't help but think Thomas' early struggles as an actor are part of what gives him that edge/attitude as Miller and makes the character so engaging. Really awesome conversation!
I don't know if Thomas Jane reads these comments, but he is my absolute favorite character in the Expanse (Wes comes a very close second!). I was actually devastated to not see him in the later books. But I did start reading the books AFTER I saw the first season on TV, and I would think of him in every reference of The Investigator, and to this day I hope he makes a comeback in the final chapter of this incredible sci-fi series. He trully did a great job with the Miller character.
the big T, my fave actor before the Expanse which is my fave show ever too, imagine how pleased i was when i first saw it. i didn't recognise him to start with which was weird but that's good acting for you i guess. also the 'how did they get him?' double take. anyhow, thank you all for being there/here, what a line up. so sad the shows over. i want those last 3 books made. is 'miller' in those?
This is probably one of the best episodes of Ty & That Guy!! Love all the genuine joy permeating through the screen as the guys are sharing the personal experiences and diving deep into the fabric of the show, it's really amazing! Keep doing this podcast, it's a godsend
This was a great insight to Thomas Jane. I have a ton of respect for his story. Ty and Wes thank you for creating this show. I enjoy hearing the stories of how y'all got in to the industry. The movies that changed your worls. It is authentic way for people who are not in the industry to understand the struggle of the process.
Thomas Jane rocks! His coming up story was brutal & heartbreaking yet inspiring b/c he survived and persevered. That's a sign of a true artist. "Never give up, never surrender." - Captain Taggart, Galaxy Quest.
Like Thomas Jane, I remember the Uptown movie theater on Connecticut Ave in Washington DC where we would stand for HOURS waiting for movies including Star Wars, Alien and Aliens!! It was double decker and the upper levels had amazing screen views. It was so terrifying yet exhilarating! Good times! Love this interview! Thanks guys!
Thank you Thomas for what you said. In my 14 years out here in LA pursuing acting, I'm am constantly amazed by the incredibly talented people I've met who have not "made it". Way beyond my meager talent and the sadness felt when you see them give up.
Always loved the original Punisher movie, thought Jane was a phenomenal actor and he embodied one of my favorite comic characters in a way that's still never been matched. Then caught The Expanse and one of the reasons I was initially interested in the show was Jane. So seeing this interview and getting to know a bit more about him was really cool. Wes, you absolutely kill it as Amos on the show as well. Amos is one of my favorite characters, mostly because I relate with him on a personal level. Without getting too into it I experienced a lot of violence growing up, and struggle with some rage and anger issues, but I'm determined to make sure that cycle of violence ends with me. You capture his struggle with good and evil well, and have definitely made a deep and interesting character. Ty, hell of a series you've written! Thanks for doing this guys, was a real pleasure to watch.
I hope Wes can (or has) see that comment. I know that few things mean more to an actor than knowing that even in some small way they helped inspire someone to do better or be better. Also my Older Brother was abused & tried to pass that on to me, but I never passed it on. It can be done & you will be better for it.
no one could have done miller other than Thomas, just like the rest of the cast on the expanse. every cast member is just as unique as each of the characters.
When you find yourself grinning for over an hour, you know it's good. Also as a writer myself, it's great to listen to these guys talk about story and craft.
I love hearing your backgrounds and philosophies. As a person who does my passion on some nights and occasional weekends, yeah, that 9-5 gig just drains the life out of the art in so many ways, big and small.
Man, an 8 year-old watching in a theatre for the first time Alien, scarred for life. The chestbuster scene alone would require therapy for the rest of his life.
I can 100% relate to Thomas Jane's story about seeing Alien as a kid. I'm the same generation, and I remember going to see Young Frankenstein at the drive-in theater with my parents and older siblings in the early 70s. All three of us kids were crammed in the tiny back seat of a butter-yellow '68 Mustang, but we were really little so it didn't seem that cramped. I remember being legitimately scared of Peter Boyle's portrayal of the monster, which is of course hilarious to think about now. To say we were not sheltered kids is a bit of an understatement.
Alien was the trigger for my writings as well... Storytelling is an art. We just brush our stories with words instead of a paint brush. Green egg as a comedy..LOL.. Where's the ham ... Had to go there.. I still have my alien book from the movie... Wow ... Never ever give up on your dreams. If they knock you down, just get back up and come at them sideways.. I've taken jobs .. But I always found the time to write .. And sometimes to rewrite. Got some of my work heading your way as I watch this amazing show. The Hobbit was the book that resonated with me first. And my creative writing started from then on in high school..
I got that too. As a UK based cannabis user of 28 years I look with envy at California so I see it as pretty natural that Mr Jane has a perfect lean going on there, not too smashed, just perfectly lubricated for this level of creative discussion.
@@steewith2ees14 he isn't just stoned. He mentions something about alcohol earlier. TJ is definitely drinking from the start, and that Sherlock he's smoking is not meant for tobacco... he's also cutting every one else off... and his eyes are so slim...he's definitely lit and anyone else notice he picks his nose with the mouth of his pipe, then pops it immediately in his mouth...
THAT was fuggin' FANTASTIC!! WHAT a fascinating cat, Thomas Jane! The chemistry between the three of you was SUPER engaging! I'd love to see you guys kick it again some time! THANKS for doing this!
Man, I love this show. So much cool insight into all kinds of storytelling, from sci-fi movies to mainstream fiction novels. So many interesting stories! And Thomas Jane is a perfect compliment and addition to the conversation. Thanks Ty & Wes -- I'm looking forward to many more great episodes.
Thomas Jane is my absolute hero. You know when people say "You can have a meal and chat with any celebrity, living or dead, who do you choose?", mine is Thomas. 100%. This was a genuine treat to listen to. Cheers lads!
There’s levels to this. Realized I’m reading comments on a UA-cam video derived from a podcast derived from a TV show that is derived from a book series.
Fascinating episode. Really enjoyed the natural back and forth and steam of consciousness. Thomas Jane is absolutely one of the most “real” people I have heard. Looking forward to more of this.
Oh man that was a great conversation. I was absolutely gripped the entire time, now it's 2:30am and I'm sure I'm gonna be mulling it over until I start work in the morning 😅 but yeah, I wouldn't even need you to relate any of this back to the expanse, even though it was awesome that you did. A bunch of fantastic storytellers nerding out about storytelling for an hour an a half. Just great!
It's incredible how literally having to live in the streets and be broke in order to try to achieve your dream job is told as an amazing life story and not a symptom of a society with very unequal opportunities. That definitely made him believable as a member of the exploited class of the Belters
I've come to this nearly a year late, but it's brilliant. Stayed up to 2am to watch ep.2, having watched ep.1 while my wife got ready to go out for dinner! Looking forward to the rest now. The expanse is my favourite TV show this millennium, by a mile, and this is only deepening my love for the show and the characters. Thanks Ty and Wes!

Thanks Ty and Wes for putting this together - imma watch EVERY MINUTE on UA-cam now ;) And special thanks to Thomas Jane for offering so much of himself to these guys and us fans in this episode. One of the best hours I’ve spent in a long time ;)
I saw the Alien movies out of order. I saw Aliens first and I can still remember that fist time vividly. It had been out for a few years and I would of been 8 or 9. My brother is 5 years older and he managed to get his hands of a copy on VHS and we watched it when our parents were out. They were less than thrilled to come home and find I'd seen it but didn't stop me from watching it again. That tape got thrashed. It's a hell of a movie.
Just want to say, I went with Ty and think his name was Eddie, and we watched Aliens the 2nd movie together for the 1st time. Will never forget the walk home Ty, you guys scared the crap out of me! Lol
Great show That New Mexico group you spoke of created my favorite series growing up Wilds Cards. An alternate historical Sci-Fi anthology where an alien virus creates superheroes with some of my favorite characters ever. (Cryod and Turtle for those who have read the series). Really cool that group is still going.
This was really cool. We never see the amount of work and dedication it takes to get such a good product on screen. Thanks for pulling back the curtain a bit.
I'm 90% certain that in 1987 I was in elementary school in Bethesda (really Rockville) 2 minutes from the acting school Thomas Jane attended (which is actually less than an hour from DC but I'm pretty sure I know where he was talking about). Also, the old theater with a second balcony level that he's talking about is, I think, the Uptown Theater on Connecticut Ave; I am very sorry to say that, although it survived until the pandemic but it closed in 2020. I saw Lawrence of Arabia there for a friend's 15th birthday party and I saw LotR: Return of the King there! It was an amazing place. It is not an "Our Town" kind of place, either; it was ritzy. Over half the parents of my elementary school classmates were getting contentious divorces. I can only imagine how his parents reacted when he dropped out!
I know this will likely never reach Thomas Jane, but I just have to say - in the vein of a father showing movies to a kid who’s too young - my dad showed me Thursday when I was 12, and it’s still one of my favorites and it made me a lifelong Thomas Jane fan. I still believe that while Jon Bernthal played a really good Punisher, Thomas Jane will always hold that title to me. The Mist is one of my all time favorites and that ending.. it was written well but the anguish that Thomas portrayed truly sold it. Great to hear his story here, and I’ve yet to finish it as I’m only 14 minutes in, but I just had to leave this comment after discovering this podcast 2 years in the future. Honestly, I read The Expanse and was on the fence about watching the show but finding out Thomas was in it convinced me to watch. A great adaptation and the casting was phenomenal. Amos is my utmost favorite character and Wes is the quintessential Amos to me. But man, Thursday is etched into my memory and I keep bringing it up to people irl and I have yet to meet another person who has seen it. Thomas is a legend in my eyes though.
What a great episode, I enjoyed how your enthusiasm for your passion is so contagious! It was also refreshing to have such a conversational episode. It was all very organic and I loved the pacing. It allowed you three to share some good bits of wisdom and it really shined through. Listening to your stories really make me understand you and the industry much better. Take care and I can't wait for the next one!
Hey Ty & Wes, i have just discovered your UA-cam channel. Ty i have read all the expanse books 3 times at least and the i have watched the TV show loads of times. I just think it is brilliant and recommend it to everyone.. I love the books and tv series.. Wes,, you are great has Amos and you have embodied the character brilliant.. Thanks guy, great podcast or episode of Ty and that guy.. 🍻 From Ireland 🇮🇪🍀
I watched Alien the first time with my eight year old stepson's face buried in one armpit and his mom's in the other. I haven't seen him since he was fifteen, it's hard to suddenly imagine him as Thomas' age. Loved the show.
We'd love if the podcast and video dropped at the same time. All 13,300 members of the Expanse Geeks on Facebook love the show, and are just learning about the video/podcasts. We hold a weekly discussion, which is easier to do if both go live at the same time.
Holy shit. The "Are you gay?!" Question kind of shook me. That was 100% the attitude of the town I grew up in. I really wanted to be a creative. I was super interested in acting. My mom and dad were quietly supportive. Outside of that, if the local kids fund out you wanted to be a creative... the ridiculing was without mercy.
If you mow my lawn, you can live in the shed for free. If everyone was at least as nice as the person was to Thomas Jane, the world would be a better place
Thomas Jane made me realize I had a thing for wetsuits. LoL (ie: Deep Blue Sea) And I was one of the (seeming) few who loved the show "Hung". Miller is my favourite role by far though. Great to catch this interview. Very enjoyable.
I liked Hung, but admittedly only sought it out and watched it after being deeply impressed (and madly in love) with Miller on The Expanse. I think it's his strongest role by far, and one that really proves his talent.
One of my biggest regrets in High school. I had a Teacher in Creative Writing that was working on her degree from college. She was a student TA for the class. She saw my little playwright I did as a Senior and wanted me to come sit in on her group in SDSU cause she said I wrote wat above my grade level. I never did. Several of those folks went on to write for Hollywood stuff. Ah well. maybe I will get back to writing one year....
Thomas rarely does interviews.

Thomas Jane is absolutely awesome and loved him in the expanse and really hope to see him do more films
Anyone seen Thomas Jane in The Vanished? Was a fun movie, he did good in that too.
I could watch 2 hours of this stuff LOVE IT !!!
We'd love if the podcast and video dropped at the same time. All 13,300 members of the Expanse Geeks on Facebook love the show, and are just learning about the video/podcasts. We hold a weekly discussion, which is easier to do if both go live at the same time.
Yes please, same here.
Regarding King's novels, Misery was set in Colorado. If I'm remembering correctly, so was The Shining.
If you mow my lawn, you can live in the shed for free.
If everyone was at least as nice as the person was to Thomas Jane, the world would be a better place
Fascinating interview all the way through! 3 minds freely firing on fiction and life.
Thomas is Legend! Thx dude!
Loved from a Buick 8! Can't wait to see what Tom's doing with it!
Thomas Jane made me realize I had a thing for wetsuits. LoL (ie: Deep Blue Sea)
And I was one of the (seeming) few who loved the show "Hung".
Miller is my favourite role by far though.
Great to catch this interview. Very enjoyable.
I loved Hung, and Miller is still my #1 favorite character of the show and books.
I liked Hung, but admittedly only sought it out and watched it after being deeply impressed (and madly in love) with Miller on The Expanse. I think it's his strongest role by far, and one that really proves his talent.
This interview was such a gift
One of my biggest regrets in High school. I had a Teacher in Creative Writing that was working on her degree from college. She was a student TA for the class. She saw my little playwright I did as a Senior and wanted me to come sit in on her group in SDSU cause she said I wrote wat above my grade level. I never did. Several of those folks went on to write for Hollywood stuff. Ah well. maybe I will get back to writing one year....
Will listen to you guys talk about anything!
