- How do you make a kilt? Ever dream of being a kilt maker?
Ever wonder what it's like to work ay USA Kilts and craft Highland dress for a living? Rocky and Mac chat about what we look for in a kilt maker, and how we train them up to create the many styles of kilts we offer.
The process of becoming a true kilt artisan is pretty long and involved. It is a slow burn of ramping up the crafter's innate skill set through mentorship.
At USA Kilts we first look for candidates who have a strong eye for detail and who are meticulous. Sometimes the new sewer here has a background in sewing, fashion or clothing manufacture - occasionally even cosplay. But we are just as likely to hire a former carpenter or draftsperson. The key is to have a visual, engineering mind. There is an art to making a proper custom kilt, but there is also a lot of science and math - particularly geometry.

There are kiltmakers in the U.S. who have trained at the Keith school of kilt making which is the world academy of kilt making if you want a fully traditional kilt made.

I so wish I lived near Spring City to apply for a job. Unfortunately, I'm all the way down in GA.
I wish you were closer to me, I would love to learn to make kilts. I have make dirndls, pants, 19th century hunting over coats……etc., etc. plus I could were my families kilt every day.😊
This was a great video as I wish to be a kilt maker too. I'm live in Beith, Scotland, so the commute may be problematic!! There appears to be very few kilt 'schools' in Scotland and the whole covid mess has put that into head scratching planning mode. It's great that as a group you have a system that works effectively for you.
pastorally before 1700s to 1800 it was a pleated large piece of cloth held in place with a belt .
I'm making a kilt without a sewing machine, I got the pleats sewn and the fish cut out, I just need the liner and a way to hold it up, maybe just ribbon ties instead of straps and buckles. About the color blind people, they sell glasses that allow them to see what colors we see.
You could do away with straps and buckles altogether and go for a belted garment, or sewn slits like big buttonholes for a semi-hidden belt that still holds the kilt securely through it's fabric.
Tie straps were not uncommon early on.
Colorblind here. Once the fabric is chosen, it wouldn't be *that* big a deal. Forget sales though.
I wish I lived close by u guys cuz I would love to work for u. I went to fashion design school and have been sewing my entire life. my mother taught me how when I was very very young. I also studied/researched historical corset making and that is what I "specilised" in. but I ended up not going into the field cuz of issues I had at the time. but ur company seems awesome and kilts r wonderful and the detail involved with them r wonderful. I would love to learn the diff between how a kilt is sewn/made vs. a regular pleated skirt etc... idk but they just seem so interesting. but o well. maybe some day when I move out that way(which I want to do, cuz i am so sick of commifonria lol) then I can apply. :) I wish u guys did a thing where people could sew the kilts at their home and then ship them to u. but idk. cuz idk how the people would learn or what machines they would use. I have a 3k$ pfaff but it is a home use, not an industrial machine. but it would b cool if u guys could fig out a way for competent seamstresses to sew the kilts at home and mail them in. :) idk. lol.

I know a wonderful lady from Scotland who made kilts while her husband was in the Army in Perth. She is a bit out of pocket from Pennsylvania, though. She lives in Amarillo Tx area now-a-days.

So when your kiltmaker turns out a less than Steller, but still pretty kilt, do you ever sale a new maker discount kilt (Not branded of course) Even Mac can make a mistake once in a while.
Have you ever thought of hiring some Mennonite ladies ? a lot of Mennonite ladies can sew !

You can't shortcut being a kiltmaker. Doing shortcuts equal mistakes, especially on an item that is hundreds of dollars
