"it doesn't pick you up at your door and doesn't take you to the doorstep you're going to" - if public transportation is dense enough, it can be pretty close. Here in South Africa I have public transport about 60m from my door, overseas at my gran's it's about 2m.
Car still wins here in South Africa due to the time it takes for public transport as it was added as an after thing, so you have to go around a lot of areas to take connections, taking longer.
