  • In this video, top coach Stephen Gertsen, explains how you can improve at coping with pressure situations in table tennis matches.
We've all been there. The score gets close at 8-8, 9-9 or 10-10 and we start to get a little anxious. The heart rate increases. The mind starts to drift to whether we will win or lose. The body tightens up. The strokes get stiff and jerky. We play tentatively and then mess up and loose the game. The pressure got to us.
Stephen suggests we can get better at dealing with these pressure situations by changing the way we train. If we can simulate pressure situations in our training sessions, this will prepare us better for dealing with pressure situations in real matches.
Stephen explains this concept in more details during the video, with the help of Craig Bryant and Paul Whiting.

Great idea. In particular I like the suggestion of creating "opposing" teams cheering for their teammates. I am sure the kids will love this too ...

Hey Tom! Great video. I’m very thankful for the UA-cam videos as they have helped me immensely in finding techniques that work for me. As a 37yr old beginner that lives at least 2hrs away from a club or coach these videos have been my basement training partner over the last couple months.
I just picked up your book “Spin” as well and I’m really liking it. It’s helping me in the mental part of my game and guiding me in my training. Once again another quality basement training partner.
Please know that I appreciate your work very much and I hope to get to meet you one day to shake your hand and say thank you. Wish me luck as I aim to improve myself and grow the sport in Alberta Canada.

Hi Devon, thanks for watching the videos and buying the book. I hope they help in some small way. It's a shame you are so far away from a club, but hopefully you have a few friends who you can train with?

A wonderful bit of advice I got years back about dealing with pressure is "remember son it's only a game".This has served me well over the years.

Ha! I'm always a little jittery at the very start of a match and then I calm down, especially if I take a lead.

Tip for guy on the far side. Try and stabilise your wrist for the bh. Get the rotation of the stroke coming from the elbow pivot.

    What about changing momentum?
    I've been 2 sets to 0 up & lost 3-2.
Once I start seeing them get the momentum, sometimes I just get in my own head & fall apart

This s quite a big topic. I'd like to gather my thoughts on this and write an article for my website. It's a common issue though. You are not alone.

@@TomLodziak I look forward to it. I think people (like myself) stop playing their natural game cause they miss some shots & then start doubting themselves, their ability & start trying things they shouldn't.
Some great content you're putting out....if you're short on ideas, I've got heaps of issues 😂

Generally i see videos like this 100% of time addressing the issue that people tend to tighten up under pressure. But There is a significant amount of people, including me, who in those moment very often loosens up to much and therefore loose focus. Are we ignored? Usually I like your videos very much, in this case I’m as with many videos to this topic a bit disappointed. Maybe it would be better to take in a mental coach for doing this video

    • @TomLodziak

That's interesting. I don't often come across players who loosen up too much in pressure situations. I'll have a think about how I could cover the topic for you and other similar players.
