Well, at least with Bushiroad, Luck and Logic got localized entirely because so many people spoke out saying they wanted it...only for the game to crash and burn in local markets even before it did in Japan, so I feel like Bandai not announcing plans yet is partially to avoid a situation like that, where they overestimate demand for the product and end up with egg on their face.

This is a fantastic video, really detailed and educational into the Japanese TCG market and history! I'm surprised you didn't mention as well though that this is also a perfect time to release this game because it seems as though we're in a Digimon Renaissance. With the release of Last Evolution Kizuna arguably the end of the original Digimon Adventure anime and as part of the franchise's anniversary announcements there's been a constant renewal of the franchise starting with the lack luster Tri Movies but continued on with the decent video game releases, adult collectible figures and digivice v-pets, model kits, and now peaking with the introduction of the (albeit only a few episodes are out) well received new reboot Adventure: anime, Bandai has been really smart about like you said, appealing to and hooking the new generation of children while also realizing the birth decline and recognizing that many people grew up with this franchise and hold a lot of nostalgia for it and is now profitable again. I think renewing the interest of old fans of the Hyper Coliseum card game and creating just a solid fun game that also retails for really cheap helps hook players that would just want to try something different. Great video man!
Great video. I feel like you're the only youtuber out there who touches on the details of TCGs and their history. I was wondering if you were ever going to make a video about Vanguard and its current state since you mentioned the 2018 reboot has been awkward and alienated the playerbase. I'm curious why the reboot didn't take off that well.
I've thought about trying to do it, though it's a depressing topic to cover. A lot of little issues piled up: splitting an already-small player base into two formats, providing inadequate tournament support for each by rolling back best-of-3 and putting Standard/Premium on different days instead of giving both tournaments 2 days, devaluing all of the G-era cards at the start and causing American shops to abandon the CFV singles market...it didn't help that the anime reboot was almost too faithful to the manga so the characters felt flatter, and it had poor production values relative to the original series people were actually nostalgic for. The scale of the reboot's power creep was also much more aggressive than players of the classic game were accustomed to, probably exemplified by how dominant Melody became after it was introduced. This is basically the tip of the iceberg; it feels like everything that could go wrong did, and there just wasn't a cohesive plan for what to do with the franchise long-term. Even now, the new Order mechanic is controversial.
@@lost-worlds That makes sense. Honestly I've mostly enjoyed the reboot (anime and card game) sans the quick pacing of the powercreep in the game. But I have also noticed Vanguard has definitely fallen in sales and maybe popularity as an extension? It's not even close to top 3 anymore with other games like BS, MTG, Pokemon and even Bushi's own Weiss overtaking it. Do you see Bushi ever bringing Vanguard back to its original glory when it could trade punch for punch with the likes of YGO or Duel Masters or is it just going to continue to dwindle and go the path of Buddyfight which seems to be on its final legs?
@@davewittenberg905 That's a tough one. I wish they would do good by us, but...in the first place, I think Bushiroad took CFV in the wrong direction with the reboot by targeting an older audience; they tried to stop competing with the Konami and Takara/Wizards, focusing on lapsed older players rather than complete neophytes. This made the game very newbie-unfriendly--even now it's focused on nostalgic iconic cards for the core clans, rather than introducing new main characters. There's no more TCG lore being produced for the series in Monthly Bushiroad or on the official website, so it's hard for new players to learn who the Cray characters are and get invested in the TCG's mythos. The current rarity system is a problem for adolescents because the VR distribution rate is too low. (Contrast to the old days when it stopped at RRR, or even in early G when you only needed a small number of GRs.) In order for them to restore the game to its glory days, Bushiroad would have to decide that they want to pursue that demographic again and restructure their entire TCG/magazine/anime production pipeline to target that audience. (Ideally, I think they would actually take a leaf from Bandai and try to pursue a broad 10~30 demographic.) And frankly, it might require *another* reset to change the power/shield/trigger relationship and reformat the game's power creep into a cycle that's actually tolerable for kids on a limited budget, and that would kill the game outright if it didn't pay off. Most of the game's established base would probably leave if all of their V-series cards were suddenly forced into Premium and they had to start over again for Standard. My personal suspicion is that Bushiroad's current plan is to bet on new IPs like Rebirth and Dominator (they assigned Vanguard's lead designer to Rebirth, and have BDF's creator on Dominator) and continue supporting the old TCGs in a reduced capacity until their profit margins taper off. The factor that might change this is the success of ZERO and the Japanese re-runs of the original anime on UA-cam, which have both demonstrated that people are still deeply attached to the gameplay, writing, and characters of TMS-era Vanguard. (ZERO actually caught those lapsed fans the reboot was supposed to turn into core players.) What Bushi will do with that information is anyone's guess; I don't think they themselves know what to do with the Vanguard IP. The Koushien arc, the Shinemon arc, this new "If" series, all feel like they're winging everything without a long-term goal. I would like them to restore Vanguard, but I think it's unlikely in light of the initial reboot momentum wearing off.
@@lost-worlds That's a very insightful analysis. That's really sad if they'll have to rely on their new TCGs and focus less attention on Vanguard. I mean that game more or less put them on the map and it has mostly held a good reputation throughout the years. But your points make sense. While it's easy to make a deck on a kid's budget it's more often than not going to be good enough for events and it costs a bit to to acquire VRs and with no reprints they get very expensive over time. I guess it's good that ZERO and the OG re-runs have been positively received but like you said at this point they've dug a hole that's pretty deep to get out of which makes it hard to steer the franchise back in that original direction. Maybe these order cards will eventually evolve into something that will revitalize the game like G Guardians. As far as the long-term goal of the IP, what I've seen from the anime so far suggests to me they're just trying to invest a lot into the worldbuilding/lore of the series. They're creating all these stories of characters to make a richer world that feels more connected and tighter than the OG/G series. Like who ever thought you'd get an origin story for Shin or that Emi would be the main character of her own arc. On the anime side of things I personally feel like the Vanguard franchise seems to be experimenting and being more creative than some of its competitors (YGO/DM), it's trying to push the envelope of what you would normally expect out of a card game franchise. Stuff like much shorter, compact story arcs, no tournaments, protagonist changing every arc, etc. But it has its drawbacks. While the V series invests a lot more into its story, it is lacking a lot in the card game department. Which is a big point of contention for a lot of people. The choreography and gameplay of the series is fairly basic compared to the 2011 anime. Although one can argue gameplay started going downhill from Link Joker when they started to skip turns and whatnot. Regardless, like you said it seems that targeted group of people, the ones who grew up with the 2011 Vanguard are still nostalgic for those times but on the other hand Bushiroad has already committed to this path and keeps going deeper every year. They did mention there's a brand new anime coming in 2021. Whether it will be a brand new cast or same characters in a different story has yet to be determined. But with Vanguard's 10th anniversary right around the corner hopefully there's a chance 2021 will be a great year for the franchise to get back to the top.
@@davewittenberg905 I'm sorry bro, the moment they asked for advice from literally a random Magic player & decided to split formats based purely on that interaction shows how little foresight they had for the future of the game. Take it from someone who's been with the game since episode 6 of the original series, they don't know what they're doing with the game & the consumers enabling that poor behavior aren't helping the cause either.
Recently got into this game. Just based on the basic mechanics of the game they would release 4 to 5 booster set without issue. The problem with Carddass is that they always mess up their power creep. Power Creep feels bad when they invalidate every single set before it.
Congratulations for such an interesting video. Since 2 months ago I have been following your page and checking the newest cards for this TCG, and I couldn't be more hyped specially now that I have the chance to live in Japan.
You're probably the only English channel I've seen so far to go into detail on the recent Duel Masters OCG updates. As an active DM player for 15+ years, it's really nice to see that. Also, RIP Dokkandeiya. It got restricted to 1 in the last banlist, along with Marigold and Yomiji getting banned completely - thereby rendering most Gacha decks basically dead. However, the new Ten Kings block looks very promising.
Thanks, I'm not as knowledgeable about DM as I'd like to be, but I try 😅 I was wondering if they would hit Dokkandeiya or try to creep it out instead. Maybe I'll be able to do actual DM videos sometime...
@@lost-worlds I'd love that! And you went pretty in depth - even with the Revolution block restrictions where they specifically had to hit Dogiragon Buster and Miradante in order to stabilise the game. Recently, the restricted Rafululu was outright banned - it was too consistent even at 1. XD But more important that Dokkandeiya, BAKUOOON Mizzail was restricted earlier this year - that was the first major hit GR decks took in terms of consistency.
I think (and given that the English version is coming out) what also helps is the fact that Digimon has been coming back bigtime with both games and the new anime being a reboot of Digimon Adventure which thus far has been positively received.
So now that this is coming out in English in January im excited but im concerned on if it will do well since its like Chrono Clash. I really liked CC but it died kinda fast and i dont want that to happen to this
i have a question regarding the card effect ''piercing'' (example: GranKuwagamon, HerculesKabuterimon). this effect triggers a security check if you attack an opponents digimon and if it is then killed by battle (the opponents digimon). does this stack with okuwamons effect: add +1 Security Check to this digimon? (if okuwamon is a evo-part underneath grankuwagamon)
The thing about Digimon its never scared to try something new and it's truly better than pokemon in every way which is sad...the games and anime are amazing!
The localisation of this game was announced, but as far as I know, we don't know if they'll change the rules for overseas audiences or not, but it's coming!
Cards become more powerful by having them stack on stop of one another, lore-wise being an actual upgrade? I didn't know Cardfight Vanguard's newest crossrides expanded to Digimon.
It stems from anything involving evolution. Pokemon stacks on top of each other too because they evolve...which makes sense. Same with Digimon and Cardfight
At this point Vanguard no longer try to encourage "stacking" of particular cards on top of each other due to how much the game is RNG based unless you have a way of getting them by some skill. Also Vanguard is now utter trash and powercrept rn.
@@chronoshindou9848 When I meant by stacking, I meant like how cards lore-wise are the same being but evolved. Like from Phantom Blaster Dragon to Phantom Blaster Overlord. I'm not talking about top-decking cards together.
Am happy I found your channel been looking for more channels who explore history of tcg other then the big 3. If you ever start a patreon I would love to donate for more content.
great video, hope you keep doing great videos, also, the card network s very useful, but may I suggest you add a section to see lists of digimon by color, just to make things easier in the future
As a Vanguard player, I think Bushiroad does not support the competitive scene i. e. only top 3 of a BCS Vanguard gets rewards so the price pool is really bad for rest of the people who entered into the tournament, the game is super RNG, does not reward the best player most of the time and at the tournament is best of one so if your dice rolled is bad it means GG for you.
Took me a while to understand it. Gonna grab some cards to train before 2021 hits up with the global version...besides I live in Asia where people usually use the Japanese version in tourneys
The Appmon toylines and video games didn't perform well in Japan. (Most kids didn't watch the show or know what it was; it had almost no advertising to drive viewership.) Toei licensed the series to Crunchyroll for a subbed release instead. The likely explanation is that Bandai and Toei decided it would be easier to market the Kizuna and Adventure reboot's merchandise internationally, than to pour more money into dubbing Appmon after seeing it flop domestically.
Participate in the official remote fight events and attend local tournaments if they're available. Bandai started up a play-over-webcam system a while back.
I would absolutely love to see not only this come to the US but I would love to see A new and more filled out Video game I loved the Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and cyber Sleuth hackers memory as well as the minor reboot of Digimon world but Knowing the game anime and tcg is giving me hope. As being a huge avid player of MTG and having a huge love for Digimon over Pokemon If this were to come to the I could see myself not only being more than willing to buy Multiple booster boxes and doing pack openings on my Twitch stream. This Has potential of being something good if done right so here is crossing my fingers
Well i love digimon and theres a board games club that i go to every wednesday and friday so i wil write it on the wishlist next and if people vote for it then the place wil buy it
I'm not caught up on the card pool but I suspect the best one is currently WIXOSS. The way the LRIG deck is implemented, and the game rules in general, make it hard to have unplayable hands if you're building your deck correctly. Historically WIXOSS has taken the most steps to maximize player skill, balance the different colors, and reduce the negative consequences of variance. Unfortunately the TCG's never been localized (it's a very niche game even in Japan, extremely otaku-oriented) and we haven't seen many games take inspiration from or try to build on what it's done.
@@lost-worlds Interesting well too bad it's not in English so I could give it a shot. Still even though I have limited interest in TCG as a whole this was very interesting and I'll be looking forward to more in the future.
@@MEGAmangaman If you want to try it, there's an English WIXOSS wiki that documents all the cards and a browser-based way to play called WEBXOSS. The WIXOSS Reddit could probably help you get started.
Yes, Duel Masters never stopped in Japan and it functions as Wizards' market equivalent for MTG. (Which up until recently hasn't been all that popular, and is more of a mid-sized game in Japan.) DM generally fights with Yu-Gi-Oh! for the #1 spot in monthly/quarterly/annual gross sales reports, and the number of main booster sets is somewhere around 75, though they've reset the numbering several times so the most recent one is DMRP-14.
I'm working on it, but this news came up right as I'm moving everything back to my house. (Had to evacuate because of the fires out here in California.)
It does, the game is targeted at a slightly older age range than Pokemon. Summoning sickness gives each player a turn to respond to their opponent's placed Digimon before they can start attacking, and every color has their own form of removal to respond to threats with. A big part of the game is cost management and trying to spend as little as possible to avoid giving the opponent too many resources to use. Some cards like Rosemon or Venom Vamdemon punish the opponent for every attack they make, and Digimon with the Blocker ability act as preemptive defense against attacks.
Evangelion CCS was released in Japan. At least Bandai has a listing for Japan on the CCS website. Honestly, you get used to Chrono Clash System's icons pretty quick and most are fairly intuitive. However, Eva did show some pretty big cracks in the system regarding the limitations of the icons. They had to put further icons on certain card's images to show they were EVA for the Pilot mechanic, a mechanic similar to Digimon's Evolution. Digimon using text causes it to have a lot more components to play with and the use of Blockers does make it a much better game than CCS. I really can't see CCS continuing the moment Digimon hits. It's not exactly healthy now for a multitude of reasons Digimon has honestly fixed, but it will be the death knell. Frankly? I am surprised CCS is continuing past Evangelion and I think the only reason it's doing so is due to the art source and small dev team really lowering the production costs and the IPs selling the game. I'm reluctant to spend more on it and apparently Eva was amazing.
After looking into it, I realize why I didn't notice the JPN release of Chrono Clash--they launched in Japan on March 20th, and I recorded the audio for this video on March 9th 😅 It turns out that for the Japanese release of Chrono Clash, Bandai used English cards repackaged with a Japanese manual, since they didn't have to translate any effect text and could just leave the card names in English.
I love Digimon, but it's hard being a fan. At least it was through the mid-late 2000s. It's like they go out of their way to shake up formulas which only hurt continuity. It's like the anti-Pokemon, they actively avoid continuity while Pokemon heavily relies on it.
Sadly most people didn't, even in Japan. It was announced near-simultaneously with the anime, but it got no attention outside Bandai's own promo accounts.
Only in Japan, where it's now the market leader. Japan's 6~12 TCG demographic is currently dominated by DM, in part because of the anime airing in a really good Sunday morning timeslot for the past 16 years. They're up to their ~75th main expansion now IIRC.
It's in a really rough place right now. The anime's been on indefinite hiatus for over a year, Media Create's month-to-month sales data consistently puts it in 8th~9th place, and back in February it was even overtaken in sales by the extremely niche otaku TCG Z/X. Before Bushi was sustaining BDF with collaborations, but now that those are going to Rebirth people are worried that Bushi's preparing to retire Buddyfight.
@@lost-worlds I was really into buddyfight until X, around that time it felt like the powercreep was so vile it made almost every older deck unplayable, and I've noticed a severe reduction in activity in the wiki around that time as well I just suppose that the drastic change in playstyles in which hyper aggressive OTK beatdown or hyper defensive slow burn where the only viable competitively just turned off many from the game, I really do miss the era between hundred and triple d, it was the sweet spot between vanilla infancy and powercreep limbo

(Contrast to the old days when it stopped at RRR, or even in early G when you only needed a small number of GRs.)
In order for them to restore the game to its glory days, Bushiroad would have to decide that they want to pursue that demographic again and restructure their entire TCG/magazine/anime production pipeline to target that audience.
(ZERO actually caught those lapsed fans the reboot was supposed to turn into core players.)
What Bushi will do with that information is anyone's guess; I don't think they themselves know what to do with the Vanguard IP.
Good video! Very informative, can’t wait for the English release!
Recently got into this game. Just based on the basic mechanics of the game they would release 4 to 5 booster set without issue. The problem with Carddass is that they always mess up their power creep. Power Creep feels bad when they invalidate every single set before it.
what is this carddass u mention?

Amazing video, feel like I came out of this knowing a TON I didn't before.
XD
But more important that Dokkandeiya, BAKUOOON Mizzail was restricted earlier this year - that was the first major hit GR decks took in terms of consistency.
Thanks for the coverage!! Digimon has alot of potential and Bandai knows this!
I really liked CC but it died kinda fast and i dont want that to happen to this
Amazing that you managed to make this video exactly 1 month before Buddyfight's formal cancellation which holds exactly to this video's point.
Amazing video! I'm glad there's so many people into the new game! :)
i have a question regarding the card effect ''piercing'' (example: GranKuwagamon, HerculesKabuterimon). this effect triggers a security check if you attack an opponents digimon and if it is then killed by battle (the opponents digimon).
does this stack with okuwamons effect: add +1 Security Check to this digimon? (if okuwamon is a evo-part underneath grankuwagamon)
Perhaps u have the answer already by now. The answer is yes, the security attack +1 is added. If u beat the digimon, u get 2 security check.
Well made video. I’ll might get into digimon tcg thanks!
I just hope they also incorporate Appmom on the new TCG.
I placed a pre order for a booster box and the blue deck. Gonna be a long wait for 2021 :D
Your videos are well made, easy to process and understand. Keep it up you got my sub.
The thing about Digimon its never scared to try something new and it's truly better than pokemon in every way which is sad...the games and anime are amazing!
So the prize card system from Pokémon with the flip card mechanic from bakugan 2.0. Smart
The localisation of this game was announced, but as far as I know, we don't know if they'll change the rules for overseas audiences or not, but it's coming!
great video! I had no idea Japan had so many active card game communities
Fantastic video! Very well researched. Keep it up.
Great video, entertaining and informative!
Am happy I found your channel been looking for more channels who explore history of tcg other then the big 3. If you ever start a patreon I would love to donate for more content.
great video, hope you keep doing great videos, also, the card network s very useful, but may I suggest you add a section to see lists of digimon by color, just to make things easier in the future
killin me with that DW3 music
hoping this digimon tcg got english version for SEA market, will buy it instantly arghhhh all art damn awesome!
...It hurts to say Buddyfight is on life support...
Bushi bushi, what are they doing
Not anymore!
Awesome video; well thought out and researched! As a Duel Masters fan, this has definitely piqued my interest.

digimon world 3 music the game that had a card game on a video talking about the card game lmao. how poetic
Took me a while to understand it. Gonna grab some cards to train before 2021 hits up with the global version...besides I live in Asia where people usually use the Japanese version in tourneys
1:01 I've heard about that Digimon Series before 🙂.....But that was never Dubbed over here....I don't know why. 🤔
The Appmon toylines and video games didn't perform well in Japan. (Most kids didn't watch the show or know what it was; it had almost no advertising to drive viewership.) Toei licensed the series to Crunchyroll for a subbed release instead.
The likely explanation is that Bandai and Toei decided it would be easier to market the Kizuna and Adventure reboot's merchandise internationally, than to pour more money into dubbing Appmon after seeing it flop domestically.
besides just buying cards, what's a way we can tell Bandai we love this game? I really don't want to see it die.
Well i love digimon and theres a board games club that i go to every wednesday and friday so i wil write it on the wishlist next and if people vote for it then the place wil buy it
Buddyfight is now literally on it's death bead.
Yea i guess they already dying months ago. But only recently finally put into rest.
looking forward to the playmats

Great video! I'm curious though what would you say is the best tcg out right now? Or at least from the last couple of years.
3:56 Wait, Duel Masters is still a thing? Haven't heard of that name in a while.
That's crazy. Cool that it's still around though.
We getting Localize!! Will you do an update video?
I'm working on it, but this news came up right as I'm moving everything back to my house. (Had to evacuate because of the fires out here in California.)
@@lost-worlds Oh, do stay safe, that's a priority!!
I just hope they won't be as expensive as vanguard when the English version comes out
Hoping for an N.A. release, already imported some starter decks to sell on fleabay(and keep some for myself of course).
i come back to see this video.. damn all pre order sold out.... aaaa im so damn regret not pre order it arghhhh
I didn't know bushiroad was seen as villain now.
Does this game has enough interactions or it's just pokemon tcg again (customizable solitaire)
@@lost-worlds phew, when it comes here i will surely get a starter deck and some packs
I would like to buy the card,ut never found any
How am I following Digimon TCG before the Japanese release and I got recommended only now!?
Yes, Digimon. I hope it beats Pokemon.
I feel like the opposite happens when a tcg becomes global, cards with different languages becomes more expensive in secondary market
For now I’m gna print the translation and stick it on a card sleeve
Won my subscription! Very good channel
"Starter decks are only 5 dollars" Game get's announced here and they are available for preorder for 17. Damn america, wtf.

Great and informative video, kinda dated now lol, but still filled with useful info
I love Digimon, but it's hard being a fan. At least it was through the mid-late 2000s. It's like they go out of their way to shake up formulas which only hurt continuity. It's like the anti-Pokemon, they actively avoid continuity while Pokemon heavily relies on it.
I didn't know appmon had a TCG 😲
Sadly most people didn't, even in Japan. It was announced near-simultaneously with the anime, but it got no attention outside Bandai's own promo accounts.
@@lost-worlds oh wow. That sucks :( glad the digimon 2020 TCG is avoiding that problem and I still need to get the cards
Great video. Subbed
Wait Duelmasters still exists? I haven't seen it since I'd say my early teen years. Im 26 now
Only in Japan, where it's now the market leader. Japan's 6~12 TCG demographic is currently dominated by DM, in part because of the anime airing in a really good Sunday morning timeslot for the past 16 years. They're up to their ~75th main expansion now IIRC.
the music is too loud
Wait, Buddyfights on life support? Damn, I only recently got into it so this is the first I've heard of this.
@@lost-worlds I was really into buddyfight until X, around that time it felt like the powercreep was so vile it made almost every older deck unplayable, and I've noticed a severe reduction in activity in the wiki around that time as well
I just suppose that the drastic change in playstyles in which hyper aggressive OTK beatdown or hyper defensive slow burn where the only viable competitively just turned off many from the game, I really do miss the era between hundred and triple d, it was the sweet spot between vanilla infancy and powercreep limbo
Well, it was.
and here I am still playing the PS1 Digital Card Battle 😂
