And Subaru you know......unlike the better Porsche blows head gaskets at 40k miles, less if you’re beating the crap out of it as most subie people tend to do. Btw I’ve seen Porsche’s with north of 300k miles 💁🏻♂️
@@rotary4tw294 lol what the only subie motor issues were the 2.5L NA and the issue persisted cuz the fix for the MLS head gaskets wasn't addressed until very late into the EJs lifespan. Subar STI 2018+ all have the most reliable boxer engine to date. You see lots of engine probs on older and some newer subies because they are not TUNED correctly. Porshe's boxer engines before water cooling were crap. And there's more aftermarket support for the EJs than Porsche's boxer.
@@rotary4tw294 Head gaskets is only really an issue because people mod the stock engine without proper torque tuning and fitments to strenghen certain intake valves. Hence the gaskets failed by trying to dump massive amount of torque. Gaskets are a non-issue on any non-sti wrx since 2015 on the FA20
One of the main reasons I bought my STI was because of the 4 doors and actual manual gearbox. I love all cars and was seriously looking at the BMW M's because they are great handling cars and pretty quick, but ultimately the lack of a stick pushed me away (you could get them, but they are pretty hard to find). My STI puts 470whp to the ground and is my daily. It's pretty fun to see the stunned look on a Porsche or BMW owners face when the 'boy racer' smokes them. While BMW's, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes can be pretty good performance vehicles, most people that buy them are more into the status those cars are about.
@Anton Zuykov youre animal youre a beast. Lol. Subaru is one of the best cornering car for boxer engine, and symmetrical awd. That allows better handling and more fun driving sensations, ah and is more safe.
buy one porsche -- or two subies ...or buy one subi and spend a little of the savings on stage 1 or 2 - be faster, keep higher value and have a great vacation
They both have similar power to weight ratio but the WRX is a rally car, it have closer gear ratio, AWD and much more torque. So it gonn lead from the start to 1/4mile. After 1/4mile, the Porsche have better aerodynmic and better stability by it weight distribution and height.
Damn you Japan ! Making Cheaper,Reliable, and Amazing Cars. Man for half the price of the Cayman you can get similar Results in the STI add at least 7k under the hood and you be able to shit on the Cayman GTS lol
Adrian Hernandez Iv got an 05 sti but I have lately been discussing selling it with my wife because she has a 2015 wrx and I really like it and want to get a mk4 supra or a datsun 240z because those are my dream cars, and I have a daily driver legacy that is a manual so its fun enough
right on! I drive one (I live in Japan) and the acceleration never ceases to amaze...Actually, it is 308 PS which is 304 hp, but that is a minor point...
@@unknownunknowns If you don't even have a basic understanding of the performance of cars you are speaking about you should probably keep your mouth shut.
+juan def Only if you're taking into account the speed. The cayman is infinitely more fun to drive. And the build quality is light years above the sti.
+juan def not just the value of money , in a race track ill bet my life saving on the sti over that disgusting porche . why ? simple , it take a full mile run for that ugly ass porche to catch up the sti and it cost double the money . and this ian lefave is an idot . He says that porche is fun to drive ? dude it's slow as fuck how can it be fun at all ?
Subaru: nice ride, what’s the retail on one of those? Porsche: more than you can afford pal! Porsche! *Porsche revs engine Subaru: ... •proceeds to smoke the Porsche
Um...I get your point, but you're about $18k off on this price difference, and that's assuming that the Subie is as basic as it comes ($35k US base with no GPS package or other add-ons). On the other hand, if Automobile had spec'd a truly base Cayman, the MSRP would've been right at $52k and change, not the optioned up $70k as stated in the Autoblog posting that brought me here. Frankly I'd rather have even a stripper Cayman and its measly 275HP with few of the add-ons (PASM and maybe Sports Chrono) over a STI. $58.5k vs $37.5k; my kidneys and spine could easily live with that. Despite its carrying limitations this Porsche is just a better everyday car in the real world of potholes, speed bumps and broken road pavement. It could definitely use a power upgrade, but that's what the Cayman S is for. The past STI's I've driven were hard on my old body and sorely lacking on the comfort side of things; when the wife's on board that counts for A LOT. 2015 hasn't brought a lot of change in that regard from what I've been reading, though I hear they've finally improved the cheesy interiors some. And like it or not, the STI is still an Impreza at its bones, albeit a special one. The Porsche is...well, a Porsche, and a darn sight nicer than even its older sibling, the 991.
Ok, but this is a standard cayman. This isn't a cayman s or r. Most likely has a 70k pricetag over interior options, non performance related. It's typically on any Porsche options are not standard and overpriced
993isgawd Dude you wrote a book for nothing, the point is...The Subaru is not only faster in a straight away, it's going to out perform the Porsche in a track on OR off road. Best bang for your buck for a daily driver and fun track car is the sti. I guess if you're an old man you can buy a Porsche..
I think the driver mod has to be taken into account. Some people know how to drive...some don't. Look at *****'s comment above. He explains how Caymans usually pull away in the straights and he reels them back in, in the corners. Now, I've also heard other STI owners that have tracked their car stated that Caymans are hard to dispatch on a road course. My takeaway from both comments is that it's going to depend on the drivers in both vehicles.
MrStevecro look on any subaru forum board, soa will do anything but honor warranties they give people. They even use the excuse of "tire wear". That's why so many people have modified shortblock on their sti, subaru puts garbage maps on their car and a very flawed ej257 but won't touch anything for the thousands that are blown
This is simply drag racing when both of these cars were designed to corner. If you want to consider drag racing, the AWD of the subaru will win you most any races. The aerodynamics and awd drag is what is slowing down the Subaru at higher speeds. Subaru won this soundly. Even if you gave the Porsche an extra 30k and the Subaru the 30k difference in price for mods, the Subaru will trounce the Porsche. I'd rather see them do a track with turns for comparison.
i doubt the porsche fanboys will admit this, or understand it in the first place. the only argument they have is the quality of the interior and looks, the latter a purely subjective parameter.
AWD isn't that grand when ot comes to drag racing. Granted with stock cars like these, it does help quite a bit. A properly setup RWD car though will always launch better thanks to physics and weight transfer which you don't properly get with AWD. This is why it takes some 2000hp for a GTR just to break into the 7s. You could do that with a 1000hp RWD car. RWD is also superior when it comes to cornering as well. You don't want your steering tires to be fed power as well, your asking to much from them. The parasitic loss through the drivetrain you mentioned is also true.
***** I will call BS on your hp numbers. A car of equivalent whp to weight and aerodynamics will post similar trap speeds despite launch setup. Whatever you can fit on a RWD rear wheel you can do the same on the rear of a AWD car provided the body is the same. It has been shown that AWDs produce lower 1/4 times for the same hp, mainly due to the traction advantage at launch. The real issue is that there are not many AWD systems that can handle the extreme power that a RWD system can. A properly set up AWD car will keep the weight planted instead. RWD drag cars are made to shift all their weight to the back. We then see the front of the cars lifting and sometimes necessitating wheely bars. In most street cars the body limits the amount of tire you can fit. We can go on a tangent comparing drag strip cars which would have less to do with this video.
UncleSiam My point was, AWD comes with too many negatives for drag racing. You have more parasitic loss through the drivetrain and you have way more added weight in the wrong areas. Like I said, a properly setup RWD car will always out launch and accelerate better than a AWD car. There are 1000whp Fox bodies running 7.70s. These are much lighter cars and their 60 times are much better. You don't get proper weight transfer with AWD and that's a fact. You don't want the car to stay flat at launch, you want all your weight on the back meats.
***** I concede that RWD is a better set up for drag racing. But as you stated on lower power street cars with the same tires, suspension, weight distribution, AWD will have the advantage. The Nissan GTR from what I hear is 2% power to the front and 98% power to the rear from a standing start which could prove your point.
I'd have to disagree with most of the comments. I've owned both cars, currently own a Porsche Cayman. If you can afford a Porsche, chances are money is not an issue. It's a matter of personal preference. Let's be real, Porsche is a more prestigious car than Subaru. The Subaru is a more "practical" car. The Porsche is a better "drivers' car. The STI caters more to the younger crowd than the Cayman for obvious reasons. I'll be honest at my age now and considering what I do, the rear spoiler on the STI seems a little juvenile to me. It would be 'cool' if I was in high school or just out of university (when I got the car) but nowadays I'd be embarrassed driving it to a business meeting. I think you need to have driven both cars to really have a legit opinion. My honest is opinion is that there really is no comparison which one is the better drive.
I don't think I ever claimed it was an exotic expensive car. At only 60k base, there are certainly more expensive/exotic cars out there. You need to learn to respect people's opinion without going on ad-hominem abusive. Really shows your maturity level. Appreciate the amusement though!
I definitely agree with OP here. There is MUCH more to Porsche than just straight line performance. And while not an exotic supercar, it certainly does belong to a very prestigious group of cars and you will never feel embarrassed showing up to a top notch location in it. You can't say the same about the STI. However, that does not make an STI a bad car. At its price, it does really well.
You buy a Porsche for the nice interior, fit, finish, etc. That's what the extra money gets you. The wing is functional and keeps the STI stable all the way up to 150+mph. It wouldn't be on the car otherwise. Anyone who knows cars and takes the time to do a few minutes of research knows that. You may have driven both, but have you run both on an autocross circuit? STI caters to people of all ages who don't care what shallow people think of their car AND want something that'll perform like a beast in all weather conditions. If that standing mile were in the rain, there'd be quite a few car lengths between the STI and the Porsche.
The cars are definitely meant to do different things. For this test though, I think it's impressive that the STi held its own on top end, something it's not meant to do. And it's cheaper. Even if you're rich, money is money. If money was really no object, there are plenty of well built German mid-engine cars to burn your cash on. I can't offer an opinion about driving, but yes, subarus have always looked a bit ridiculous, it's love/hate. Porsches, besides the old air cooled ones, which I happen to love, have always been a bit understated. Both are bullet proof reliable. If I had 60K to burn, I'd probably try to find an NSX....
you stupid punk. first of all, if money is not an issue and you buy a porcshe, you would buy the best of it's range. since you ride the lowest class of the porcsch, you own jack. so far your stupid statement, i doubt you understand the mistake you made. secondly, if you dont like the wing, you put an aftermarket which is less screeming or remove it all the way, since the thing does not produce that much of downforce anyway. it is a sorry ass excuse to fanboy your ugly punk ass porcsche, keep your nazi car, it is fun to race you dicks on the autobahn and put you on your place with an (in the majorities eyes) underdog sportscar.
I've owned and driven Boxster S and sti. Hard to compare the two, each have their strengths and weaknesses. Bottom line is: if you live in the snow belt and can afford only one car, get a new sti. If you live in the sun belt, get a used Cayman. If you have enough cash.... get both! For pure driving pleasure and excitement it's hard not to prefer the Cayman/Boxster, the flat six and the sounds emanating from it are in a whole other league compared to 4 banger
DanM101 Funny you say that. I too bought a sti and drove it in TX and WA. Then sold for a Porsche Boxster RS60 when I moved to Southern California. You are dead on!
wrx now has a 10"-foot of legroom in back w the more stabile wheelbase, all season fun w full aftermarket support ready to go. Just a tune, airfilter and downpipe away from 12s@108-110+...275 rubber now fits all around since subaru pre cut the sheetmetal for tire clearance. Evo 11 lives on w an EJ mill
Cayman's are so aero efficient, they have a higher top speed than cars of the same power and even cars with quite a bit more power. They do also have long gear ratios which probably helps.
A slap on the wrist to anyone who thinks a race in a straight line is supposed to tell you anything useful about two cars designed to cut through curves. Here's food for thought: EverydayDriver did a comparison of the BRZ and the WRX; the WRX had trouble keeping pace with the BRZ in the corners. And that's all stock of course, which includes the BRZ's awful stock all-season tires. Now consider that the BRZ was inspired by the Cayman, which is more powerful and comes with better tires and brakes. Stoplight drag races aside, the Cayman is unquestionably the car to drive when you want to tear up the corners. As long as it's on flat pavement.
+Mike Doolittle Oh and don't forget to mention that the Subie WRX is able to carry 5 passengers and a trunk full of junk. And actually according to the reviewers, having myself watched a couple of the BRZ vs WRX videos, the WRX could "just" keep up on the cornering side because of the xtra hp. But was obviously hindered as Keith Kendall mentions by a higher center of gravity. And funny you should mention corners, because as we know if you don't have the real estate of miles of straight road, the Porsche obviously lost out in tractability and acceleration. So more likely the WRX would leave it after exiting the corners. The Porsche would be useful in highway/autobahn type cruising, but not practical as an everyday driver.
***** I totally agree, and was shocked when I found out the first time I did a service through Sublab how cheap the synthetic oil was. Previously I had paid $200 for fully synthetic (in NZ dollars).
Philip Pears The Porsche is going to have much more accurate and responsive turn-in; and the lower center of gravity, mid-engine balance, and higher power mean less speed is lost through the turn. It's going to enter the turn faster and lose much less speed. But all this being said, I'd suggest that if someone is fussing over lap records or 0-60 times when buying a sports car, they've lost sight of the whole spirit of owning one.
Some truth in the sports car idea, however the Subaru is not technically a sports car, it's a 4 door family sedan that can go over sand/snow/mud/gravel etc and perform equally well as a "pure" sports car (2 door coupe, low center of gravity etc). But to debunk your comment about turn in, perhaps you should look at the making of the 2015 WRX video and see exactly what was done to the design of the car to make it compete on an equal footing to those pure sports cars. Which actually has them testing against Porsche and the like thereof on the harshest of tracks. And also which car did you think had more power??? 300hp vs 260hp I believe in favour of the WRX Sti, which btw don't lose as much speed through the corner as you suppose. There is some extra weight 150kg and COG that will force centrifugal force to scrub a little speed, but once you hit the apex you can power out and will not lose traction as much, giving better exit speeds. Of course driving technique will also come into play.
Gentlemen, there's more to a car than just straight line speed. Those who can afford it will get a Porsche, those who can't will get a Subaru and make all sorts of justifications for it. No doubt the Subaru is a fine car, but you'll always have the 'wow' factor when you arrive in a Porsche! ..and the valet will park the Porsche in the front and put the Subaru in the back. That's the reality!!! Yes, I am a Porsche owner and I know what I am talking about!!
Love the results - Subaru shows up and puts up against a car costing twice as much. Wouldn't that be the message. Now, throw that 2.0L FA Turbo engine (from 15' WRX) into a BRZ... that, would be nice.
I read the brz doesn't have a turbo because there's no room for one. The turbo in the '15 rex is under the engine, and there's no room under the brz' engine.
JP Dempsey That's probably exactly what's going on, the BRZ is a tiny little thing. Maybe they should bring back the old protruding through the hood design of the massive superchargers and blowers and mount the turbo poking out of the hood.
It doesn't cost twice as much. Get your facts straight. Here in Canada a base Cayman goes for about 61k before tax. The same model subaru WXR STI sport tech package (same as in the video), goes for just under 50k out the door. Not even fucking close to half as much.
sexyitalian891 true! and you still have a Porsche wich (despite of any logical diff.) is not the same like "some Subaru.." both cars are great in their respective ways
I don't think anyone should be under the illusion that the 981 platform was build as a dragster, nor was the STI for that matter. These are purpose built vehicles, neither of which specifically emphasize this purpose. Porsche doesn't sell cheap cars, they are a prestigious brand which mixes luxury with sport. When you drive a Porsche, it imparts a feeling of quality that is hard to replicate, people value this feeling, Porsche sells it very convincingly . The Subaru is not a luxurious vehicle by any means, its emphases sporty driving with everyday practicality. That element of that practicability considers the price. There is a strong "bang for the buck" argument for the STI, which Subaru has been able to achieve at the expense of vehicle development. The STI has carried over the EJ257 motor since the 2004 model, is this a bad thing? Depends how you look at it, every motor has its flaws, Subaru has had many years to work out the flaws of the EJ, thats called refinment, and that's a good thing, refinement means reliability, and who doesn't want that. Is the STI underpowered? the simple answer is no. It has always had a more than acceptable 0 to 60 time under 6 seconds in stock form. When you buy a sports car "feeling" becomes apart of the equation. Its a beautiful thing what we have so many options as to what package of elements we can select from in a sports car. If the only metric that mattered was Hp/torque per dollar, we would all be driving American muscle cars.
Everyone is complaining how this sis stupid but i believe that the whole point of this is just to show that for 99% of us who just drive on the freeway and like to feel a bit of adrenaline subaru is faster you don't need to spend 70K to have an exhillarating ride.
Most people say acceleration is more important. There it is. A German would maybe say top speed..... (JOKE!) Even cornering on public streets doesn matter that much becuase you are getting easily @ illegal speeds. Therefor acceleration is the most important part...
Base Cayman can be had for under 60k and it handles much better. Not to mention sounds head and shoulders better, build quality is better, ride quality is better, looks better. It might be out of your average Subaru buyers price range, but its still an excellent vehicle.
sexyitalian891 The Subaru WRX STI has better handling than the Porsche Cayman. The WRX STI is a rally car and it drives well under any condition (snowy, muddy). The WRX STI also has better build quality than the Porsche Cayman. Subaru is renowned for its excellent reliability and efficiency.
IPodsSuck a You are just making shit up off the top of your head, get a grip. Porsche has a beautiful interior even in base form and its a lot better than the Subaru's, not to mention all of the engineering that went into it. Its a WAY better built car than the Subaru, get your facts straight, quit making things up. And better handling? That's a joke. Who gives a shit how it handles in snow or mud, like, wtf does that have to do with handling, I guess a ram truck handles mud and dirt better than a Subaru so it must be better handling right? The cayman is a mid engined sports car, the Subaru is rally car for the street. Around a track the Subaru would get destroyed.
sexyitalian891 First off. The Subaru has a much better built than the Porsche. Subaru is just so good at making very solid, reliable, and efficient cars. Porsche, not so much. The point of my previous comment was obviously to show how superb a Subaru's traction is. The Subaru has better handling than the Porsche Cayman, and many car reviewers have claimed this. It's not just my opinion. You're the one making crap up, because you haven't tested out the two cars. Unless you tested both of them out, you don't have the privilege to post your gibberish comments.
@@growingup4487 With a stock setup definitely not! Porsche is an amazing race platform out the box... the stock version of the STI is ofcourse a watered down race platform. Once modified correctly for track... its a dream! At any generation just like Porsche. I guess I regularly watch track races with STI drivers... (also aspiring to be one myself) I regularly see them dominating track times and competing with supercars on tracks... so I may be speaking from a more than daily driver experience/perspective.
Ryan Cole WRX / STI enthusiasts always hate on the model that becomes the community favorite some time after it is succeeded by the next one. Subie fans used to hate the Bugeye look but now you see them talking as if it's the best looking version of the car. Yes, some models age better than others when it comes to vehicles, but Subaru fans are a curious bunch nonetheless.
Ryan Cole I've seen one of the purple STI's in person and the car definitely looks better than it does in pictures. Same with the WRX; there's a black one down the road from where I live. I did a double take when I saw it - in a good way. The design takes some getting used to, but it really is a better car than previous years have been. If nothing else, at least from an engineering standpoint.
Looks like the Cayman's superior aerodynamics and gearing begin to reel in the gap around the one mile mark. Still would rather have the STI then my wife and kids can ride along while having some awd turbo powered snow fun!
I had a 2006 Cayman S and I felt worried to take it too the edge for fear of breaking something. I "downgraded" (prestige wise) to a 2009 STI 330s and I feel like now I have more fun because I am not worried if something breaks because it won't cost as much to repair. If you have a house already and you are living comfortably then get the Porsche but for the average joe with a bit of money buy the STI.
It'd be nice if they included a Cayman S comparo as well. Although this does look great for Subaru, it's kind of set back when you consider 15 years ago. The Subaru Impreza STi's and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo's were 4-door saloons that could take the fight to a Porsche 911 and possibly beat the snot out of them. Unless tuning is involved (as was the case when Top Gear showed Jeremy Clarkson chased down a Lamborghini Murcielago in an Evo FQ-400 and made it choke), the current STi will have to settle for the 911's little brother.
I know I use to work for a subaru dealer and when I had to move them from one lot to another after a massive snow storm. those subarus would rip thru that snow with ease
I know this is an old comment, but the top speed of the new STI isn't 150 mph. I've hit 153 mph with a passenger and I still could've gone a bit faster. Unfortunately I started coming up on traffic so I slowed down before I killed myself or anyone else. I'll try to get video if I get a chance to do it again.
the STI in governed at 150mph on the stock map, at stage 1 with the cobb intake the gearbox is maxed out at 167 mph. takes about 3 months to get there after hitting 140 but it will happen if you have the balls
What most people seem to forget is that the STI is a 3 differential little monster (not the cheap AWD we see in small SUVs) and it takes corners in inclement weather and lose terrain like a beast while the Porsche at double the price can't perform well outside dry pavement. The STI is a beast in varied circumstances while the Porsche you can only drive in FL when it doesn't rain. I'm not a Subbie fan, but If you care only about performance and practicality at half the price you get an almost Rally grade performance car. You can take any corner in the snow knowing that the axle differential will pull you through.
No surprise here, the STI is a monster in it's own right, has been in North America since it came out here in 2004. Although they got a little soft with the 08-12 hatchs I gotta say. The Porsche is engineered and designed in a country that's home to the Autobahn, they have been making cars that can do 250 km plus for years.
Wow...really? Timing says they tied...the Cayman couldn't have been ahead. The Mark-1 eyeball doesn't really count in measuring accuracy. That timing light at the mile marker is going to be more accurate. As well, AWD isn't really a huge advantage in a standing mile...seriously. If it took that damned long for the Cayman to tie it, one could say the Cayman lacked power, even though it's like 300-lb lighter. As well, the Cayman doesn't have 4-wheel parasitic losses either. The STI's gearing is NOT suited to such racing (neither is the Cayman's). Gearing matters in a standing mile, not AWD.
Ron Sinclair The timing was only accurate to 1 decimal place which is very inaccurate at 135mph. 0.05second, a car would travel 3.02metres! So half a car ahead is shown on video but not recorded on the timing.
James B You know this how? Do you know some hard information that we don't? Unless you helped engineer the timing setup, you're just speculating. I'm pretty sure the timing is very correct. There's no reason it shouldn't be, since most of the tests of big magazines revolve around timing. If you're saying it's wrong, prove it. What you offered above isn't proof (I'm not sure what it is). You don't even know what FPS the raw video footage was recorded at. Again, the eyeball and even a camera isn't the best measurement...this is why they use timing lights in competitive sports such as Olympic events. Just because it looks like a person or thing crossed a finish line first doesn't mean he/she/it actually did. If you guys have a problem with the video's validity, you should be pinging Automobile Magazine. They're going to have more answers than anyone here, including James B, since they captured the footage and times.
Yes! The Cayman BARELY beat a rally car that's built for dirt track/road racing and NOT straights... Oh by the way, the STI is also a four season car and is very capable in the snow... Hmmm. The Cayman is a beautiful car. I noticed this page is full of very prestigious car shoppers considering the knowledge you all carry about how capable the Cayman is. Silver Spoon trust funders'? Chip! Chip!
The Cayman didn't beat the Subie tho? They had the same mile time but the wrx beat the Cayman off the line. Subaru definitely won that, even by a little
that is why a few folks really like WRXs - kinda clunky compact sedan that will comfortably haul a family but still dust off a Cayman or Mustang GT if needed, especially in the wet and all for basically half the price
Sti is a quarter mile "quick" car. Porche is a "fast" highway car. Notice how the sti embarassed the porche out of the hole but it was catching the subie at the end.. Just like racing a 70 chevelle ls6 vs a new vette. Chevelle would beat it till about 120mph and then the vette would just smoke it from there.. Apples and oranges. Stupid race..
+Kyle Schlingloff name and quality make it so, these people are boasting about beating a porsche, use the trim that was meant to race, not even saying go against the GT4, the s will do the job
Why even make the Cayman anyways? Is that supposed to be a budget Porsche? Like a poor man's Porsche, the Boxster? I think the aerodynamics of the Porsche was helping it catch up to the Subaru.
Id take the Porsche even if it lost by over 3 cars or more, even knowing that this wasnt the S or R, which would destroy the Subaru. And as somebody else said in the comments "if its about the looks you dont deserve a Subaru" well not like I even wanted to deserve one :P
If it was the S or R, I would like to see your smile when you would look down in your wallet after the purchase :) STI, spend 20 grand on gear and you still have about 20 grand left compared to what the test-price is for the Cayman ^^ And subaru is for looks too don't listen to that guy. It's just that the drivetrain and engine is the heart and soul of the car
Daniel Kemnitz If Im getting a Porsche, Ferrari, AMG, whatever, Im definitely not looking at my wallet cause then you have the "options" and you want them or think you need them. Id go for sure for the Cayman GTS which I totally love and the price for it its way too close to the 911 range and still, Id take the Cayman.
i would take two STIs over a Porche anyday. Makes no sense to spend 70k on a Porche that could barely even perform better than Evos or STIs for much less money.
M.Y. Niqqa Well the same thing applies to almost everything there is to buy, why get a big house for over $300,000 more when the cheap one does the same.
Oh yeah, get an amped up Subaru and lets race it with a little stock cayman ! very classy indeed. Things would be very different even with a small upgrade to the cayman - or simply the stock cayman gts.
I drive a Cayman S. I have never driven and STI, but people LOVE the STI. I think it's ugly looking and has a shitty interior, and being a 45 yr old who works on Wall St, I can't be seen in one. However, many, many people say the STI is a fantastic car that handles superbly and that has more power than it knows what to do with. I have never heard anybody ever say anything bad about how the STI performs. If I were 20 yr old, I might own an STI and be very proud of it. Maybe a BRZ.
Stefan Amini how much do want to bet? name an amount and we will work out the terms of the bet (proof I must furnish etc). I trade stocks at home. I live in NYC. I am not employed by a company.
Stefan Amini Here's an idea. I will give you the names of three people at the dealership where I bought (not leased, but bought) my 2015 Cayman S. You can call and ask any of those three people about my purchase. That woudl be the first bit of proof. You can also call Tourneau on 57th St and ask if they serviced my Rolex Submariner in 2014. They will say "yes". I will give you both the serial number of my watch and the ticket number for the repair. Furthermore, today, I will drop off my Porsche Design automatic watch at Porsche Design in SoHo (NYC) to be sent out for a repair. Tomorrow, you can call them to verify.I own a Rolex Sub and a Porsche Design automatic. On top of that, call Equinox gym in TriBeCa and ask if I am a member (it's 155/month to be a member). This isnt even a fair straight away race. This souped up, turbocharged awd Subaru has more torque, hp, higher top speed, and weighs more. Give the Cayman a fair chance and put them in a head to head lap race where the midset engine and advanced steering can be put on display, which of course is the reason why you pay extra for the Porche. However, both cars are awesome pieces of automotive engineering.
What a stupid test for these cars which aren't created with this in mind, at all. At least Motor Trend put it's test on a track, with turns, and the STI won. This is why this magazine isn't held in much regard by enthusiasts, and these test drivers are awful as well. Wouldn't doubt they let hit soak hit both cars and that they had their AC cranked with traction control on. New STI turned out OK it seems if they finally addressed the typical Subaru understeer and sharpened response to feel like the Evo 7/8/9. It won the 1/4 here, but big whoop, that's not what either of these cars are made for. Regardless, Automobile Magazine get a Fail Whale sticker, once again.

Intelligent mode limits throttle response for fuel economy. It also limits turbo boost to 8psi, instead of the full 14.7psi you would get in sport or sport sharp. In sport mode the throttle response is the same as any other car. Sport sharp the throttle response is extremely sensitive so you barely touch the gas and the throttle still opns up to about 50% even if youre barely touching the pedal.
I myself own a 2015 Camaro as 1le, I test drove my friends 2011 suburb era sti hatchback and I have to say they're great cars, although I'm a bit surprised by that 13.8 quarter mile, it definitely felt faster when I was driving it
Porsche's most anemic car vs The Fastest Car Subaru makes Thing is, I'll always be a subaru fan, something about a car with four doors, AWD, and readiness for being modded. It just is the kind of sports car that makes sense to own.
No one buys a Porsche to go fast in a straight line. The interior/exteriors are artistic and timeless (age well) and they are the best handling Carson the world. No one buys a roadster like a Miata for the power either...they are fun because of the weight and handling.
Why do they put a base Cayman vs. top of the line WRX? Should of been the top of the line Cayman GT4 vs STI. Even if it was the Cayman S, quarter mile would be Cayman S (12.7s) vs STI (13.8s)
subaru & porsche, showing the proud of boxer engine
But Porshe makes engines for 100k kilometers max and Subaru... you know.

Subaru: ... •proceeds to smoke the Porsche
I dont care... I take the porsche home.
holypai me too
id rather take 2 subies for the price lol
proof not to waste 53k on a base cayman

$38.1k Vs $70k You can have all your excuses, ill still keep my $30k+ in my pocket
Love. It's what makes a Subaru , a Subaru.
Enough said 👌
I used to think that slogan was cheesy af...then I got a WRX.

in Germany the Cayman costs 51K and the WRX STI like the one in the video starts at 45k ... not much different realy
Chris C that's not typical at all. If it's under warranty then no problems (unless you were tracking it)
MrStevecro look on any subaru forum board, soa will do anything but honor warranties they give people. They even use the excuse of "tire wear". That's why so many people have modified shortblock on their sti, subaru puts garbage maps on their car and a very flawed ej257 but won't touch anything for the thousands that are blown
Damn STI half the price and faster, nice.
*****
I concede that RWD is a better set up for drag racing.
DanM101
Funny you say that. I too bought a sti and drove it in TX and WA. Then sold for a Porsche Boxster RS60 when I moved to Southern California.
You are dead on!
This is good for that time when the Porsche needs a mile to catch up and you happen to have a one mile straight away.
wrx now has a 10"-foot of legroom in back w the more stabile wheelbase, all season fun w full aftermarket support ready to go.
+Keith Kendall Not to mention that the Subaru is $30k less xD
I just wish they would turbo charge the FR-S and drop it in the BRZ.
Love that Subaru Turbo sound
No comparison to the feel and drive of a true sports car like the Cayman, Subaru WRX Sti has an awesome engine placed inside a box with four wheels.
I would but the sti cuz the sti is one of the most expensive Subaru's while the Cayman is the Porsche for people who can't afford the 911.
(JOKE!)
Even cornering on public streets doesn matter that much becuase you are getting easily @ illegal speeds.
Therefor acceleration is the most important part...
Base Cayman can be had for under 60k and it handles much better. Not to mention sounds head and shoulders better, build quality is better, ride quality is better, looks better. It might be out of your average Subaru buyers price range, but its still an excellent vehicle.
sexyitalian891
The Subaru WRX STI has better handling than the Porsche Cayman.
Around a track the Subaru would get destroyed.
sexyitalian891
First off.

Probably because of local air quality laws.
First thing I did with mine was replace it with a cold air intake.
The new STI is so tame looking. No flared fenders, aggressive front bumper, or stance. Just looks like they slapped the wing on a WRX and that's it.

Yes, some models age better than others when it comes to vehicles, but Subaru fans are a curious bunch nonetheless.

I've seen one of the purple STI's in person and the car definitely looks better than it does in pictures. Same with the WRX; there's a black one down the road from where I live. I did a double take when I saw it - in a good way. The design takes some getting used to, but it really is a better car than previous years have been. If nothing else, at least from an engineering standpoint.
I've seen it in person. Too civilized IMO.
Looks like the Cayman's superior aerodynamics and gearing begin to reel in the gap around the one mile mark.
Still would rather have the STI then my wife and kids can ride along while having some awd turbo powered snow fun!
the sound of a turbine Subaru...
So 14.2 seconds in a Porsche Cayman in a 1/4 mile 🤔 so you are telling me that 2013/2020 Honda Accord V6/2.0T do 14.0/14.2 seconds in a 1/4 mile WTF
Well said
It'd be nice if they included a Cayman S comparo as well. Although this does look great for Subaru, it's kind of set back when you consider 15 years ago. The Subaru Impreza STi's and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo's were 4-door saloons that could take the fight to a Porsche 911 and possibly beat the snot out of them. Unless tuning is involved (as was the case when Top Gear showed Jeremy Clarkson chased down a Lamborghini Murcielago in an Evo FQ-400 and made it choke), the current STi will have to settle for the 911's little brother.
of course 💪🇯🇵 🙏
Wow you guys make good videos! Keep up the good work. Subbed
driving a subaru in the snow is so much fun
I know I use to work for a subaru dealer and when I had to move them from one lot to another after a massive snow storm. those subarus would rip thru that snow with ease
Right? I'd like to see how the Cayman handles that!
13.8 on the 1/4 mile for an STI ???
I've seen anywhere from 12.8 - 13.2 time and time again but 13.8 ???
The top speed in older STis was 161mph, so they lowered it to 150mph in a new one.
Jason Rodriguez
don't do it unless it is on a track.
In the new one is 159 mph not 150. This vidoe on that part is wrong.
The top speed stock sti is 170mph
the STI in governed at 150mph on the stock map, at stage 1 with the cobb intake the gearbox is maxed out at 167 mph. takes about 3 months to get there after hitting 140 but it will happen if you have the balls
Haha, the porsche got rekt by a $40k subaru impreza.
Ron Chen not really
Honhoa Ong Yes it did
They had the same time for the mile. The porsche was actually going faster than the subaru at the 1 mile mark.
Israeli shitbag Its not an impreza, its a WRX STI
+cassidy shuler Aerodynamics and 150kg less weight is why, but given the 30k price diff, who wants to take a mile to catch up another car.
Standing mile races and 1/2 mile are by far favorite
Put a stage 1 on the Sti and the Cayman would never catch up throughout that entire mile.
AWD was the only reason it was close. Pause the at the 1/1 mile, Cayman ahead.
yes i agree.. saw the same
Wow...really?
Ron Sinclair Just pause the video at 1:07 and you'll clearly see that the cayman is ahead.
Nice job Automobile! You make David E. proud.
Subaru definitely won that, even by a little
that is why a few folks really like WRXs - kinda clunky compact sedan that will comfortably haul a family but still dust off a Cayman or Mustang GT if needed, especially in the wet and all for basically half the price
blah blah blah, all the comments and arguments sum up: bang for $ is Subaru, comfort and sense of "higher" class belongs to Porsche. The end.
I know there's a huge price disparity here but even so shouldn't the STI be going against the Cayman-R? The top trim levels should be compared.
Wow - Porsche did better then i expected...
Double the cost too
I like the whistle of the cars go by.
Proud Subaru Fan!😄
Porsche Caymen is proof that your basically just paying for the name, at times.
Drag races... meh i prefer the nordschleife as the default benchmark for sports cars
Well done, guys! Bring on more!
What's making that high pitch noise? It sounds like plane is about to take off.
so you used an STI, but didnt use a cayman S. really?
the cayman used is 30,000 dollars more than the sti, so why would you want the cayman s to go up against it?
+Kyle Schlingloff name and quality make it so, these people are boasting about beating a porsche, use the trim that was meant to race, not even saying go against the GT4, the s will do the job
Base Cayman is a 70k sports car regardless.
then the WRX STI S207 would do the job
Pang Xuan Yang cosworth sti will do the job 😂
Why even make the Cayman anyways? Is that supposed to be a budget Porsche? Like a poor man's Porsche, the Boxster? I think the aerodynamics of the Porsche was helping it catch up to the Subaru.
MK7 GTI TSI Sector Bala TFSI Arthur Lima
Ótimo custo/desempenho do Subaru, não acham?
Demais!! Essa porche anda mt bem! ent parabens para o subaru!
More of these please!
Subaru is better...
Porsche for the track and Baru for Rallying.. Simple like that! both Good and nice cars but Ill finally take Porsche because you know... :-)
I'm imprezed
おもしろい結果になりましたね
空力の恩恵は乗った人にしかわからないでしょうね
Paco Inurreta houses have nothing to do with cars. The location and neighborhood of the house has everything to do with the price
Porsche. No offense, but I wouldn't be caught in a Subie. I don't care how fast you are, I know I could buy 3 STI if I wanted.
Porsche's these days are overrated. Their are so many better alternatives.
Oh yeah, get an amped up Subaru and lets race it with a little stock cayman ! very classy indeed.
Things would be very different even with a small upgrade to the cayman - or simply the stock cayman gts.
It's turbocharged, fucktard.
Binoy Vudayagiri that is stock
Binoy Vudayagiri = silienced
It's silenced. Not silienced, wanker.
Binoy Vudayagiri LOL "amped." Turbos come stock on WRX's and STi's bruh.
You do not own a Cayman, and you do not work on Wall St. You are however a world class gear box.
Then call the Brandeis University English Department and ask if I was a Ph.D. student there in the 90's/00's (never completed my dissertation).
Again, how much do you want to bet? I will take your money and donate it to Brandeis. I don't need it.
I called all of the above sir....and they confirmed that you are a gear box lord.
Stefan Amini you didn't. you couldn't call the Brandeis English department on a Sunday. It's closed on the weekend. you're a troll. in a public forum, where my name is visible, you are calling me a liar. that's uncool.
name an amount you want to bet and we can discuss a way that we can publicly verify all this.
Subaru be like U GET REKT SON
Nissan, Subaru, Toyota And Honda....the big 4!
Too bad the STI is so ugly looking now. Badass car and they went with such a basic/simple design. Not sexy at all.
why u bully me
Why would you compare standard Cayman with a WRX STI in the first place? It's like you guys couldn't get a hold of the S version at least
0:13 Oh oh this is not going to end well for that $70K car
Hahaha,Japan is better for most of the time..
Cheaper and faster due to the use of turbo and those new technology that make it efficient, instead of making huge and expensive engine with old technology..
Subaru WRX STI (Win) vs Porsche Cayman
Nissan Skyline GT-R R35[3.8l Twin Turbo V6,AWD](Win) vs Ferrari 458 Italia [4l or 5 l(I don't even remember) Huge Naturaly Aspirated V12, RWD]
Ferrari 458 Italia is a 4.5L V8 hence, the "4," the "5," and the "8".
Ohh,thanks for the correction
I just bought a 2016 STI and the dealer didn't explain it and I can't find it.. You have S which I use for cruising around the city.. S# for speed but I don't know what the Intellegent setting is for.. I haven't been able to get on it bc I'm breaking it in, not racing or redlining until I hit 5,000 Miles.. Thanks for the help, I don't claim to be a great driver but I have driven a stick my whole life but not sure about the last setting, thanks
It is also recommended to use Intelligent mode during inclement weather due to the throttle response change mentioned by Mseries99
STI BEST!
STI any day. WAY cheaper to mod. Mods yield larger gains than the Porsche would for a fraction of the price.
LOL The Subaru finished at the same time and that's the 2.7 base Cayman, the Cayman S would kill it
BUT EHEM THE PRICE OF THE CAYMAN...
Put either of them on a rally track...
Okay Ryan. You do that. Stay mad bro.
My stock 2013 WRX does a better quarter mile than that STi does. and doesn't have a wing on it, so I think I could beat that standing mile time.
Can you imagine the mods you could do for that price difference though???
This was a base Cayman with only 213 ft lbs of torque and no turbo, no awd...and it still evened up the 1 mile to a tie. Nice!
Subaru
Standing mile of Audi S8 vs S63 vs Jag XJR vs Maserati Quattroporte vs Lexus LS 600h
Sti 13.8??? Bad driver..
what u hate subaru? Wow so sad then
Whe do you test the BMW M235i Standing Mile?
wow the porsche caught up at the end, must've been due to aerodynamics?
Next up, make them go through some bends and lets see which one is the better.
I myself own a 2015 Camaro as 1le, I test drove my friends 2011 suburb era sti hatchback and I have to say they're great cars, although I'm a bit surprised by that 13.8 quarter mile, it definitely felt faster when I was driving it
Wow auto correct messed that up good
1/4 with a pro would be 13.1 done by motor trend
Please redo this test,Porsche with PDK transmission and launch control. The Subaru has a distinct traction advantage with four wheel drive.
Porsche's most anemic car vs The Fastest Car Subaru makes
Thing is, I'll always be a subaru fan, something about a car with four doors, AWD, and readiness for being modded.
That Subaru walked the Dog for the longest
