One Easter egg I noticed, in the final episode Kevin mentions to Nora that he had a heart attack and had a pacemaker implanted, and he offers to show Nora the scar. In the second to last episode while Kevin is in the afterlife/other world/whatever, his "identical twin" has a scar from where they implanted the nuclear launch key, but his scar looks identical to a scar that you would get from a pacemaker implant.
I think those who departed had one thing in common -- Someone had wished they would disappear. Including the baby in the opening scene, the pregnancy of Ms Garvey, the laidy having affair with Mr Garvey, and Nora's whole family. If you rewatch, everyone was having a hard time at the moment, and was probably wishing their trouble would disappear. That's why people felt so much guilt and can't move on. But they could never admit that thought to anyone.
Perhaps that's why it's ironic, because Kevin's family remained complete, despite the fact that he is the most cowardly person who wanted to run away from everything. (Their last son with Lorrie has departed)
The Leftovers is one of those shows in which you can watch the entirety of the show multiple times but each time better than the last. Thanks to The Leftovers, I have come to hate shows that try to explain everything to me.
Caldor3 I have definitely watched it at least 3 times all the way through. And occasionally I find myself in the mood to just watch like “international assassin” or “crazy whitefella thinking” or whatever. Probably the best series I’ve ever seen.
There is also the guy at the airport who wants to get to Antarctica, claiming that a nuclear event will occur. And as we know, it really does a bit later. Also, Cairo was mentioned many more times throughout the series, very interesting stuff. I'm sure we are still missing a lot of other stuff as well, it would take an insane amount of time to find all the little connections and references, which all make this kinda unerrated show that much more brilliant. Great video by the way, cheers!
Wasn't the note tucked into the National Geographic (episode 10) on a page with a map of Cairo and then soon afterwards, Cairo was mentioned, but as a town in the US?
I think one other Easter Egg is when Kevin Sr comes across the black VW Beetle in the outback, and the owner sets it and himself on fire. The episode is called Crazy Whitefella Thinking, and this scene is extremely similar to the 1971 movie called Walkabout, right down to the black VW and the driver burning it and himself in the outback. That movie explores Western Whiteman’s behavior/ideals as compared to the Aboriginal man…and fits in with the title Crazy Whitefella Thinking.
This and the Kevin analyses were exactly what I was looking for. The Leftovers is just so profound, so meaningful, you keep watching and keep finding new things, like different layers you just keep peeling. It's probably one of the most underrated shows I've ever seen. Thank you for this, your videos are amazing. You got a new subscriber!
Also in the fourth episode of season one christine said to tommy: " the spiders are beneath the water" or something like that, i think it's an early reference to the magazine, great video, the leftovers is a once in the lifetime show, greetings from México
in the Niagra Falls recording, young Kevin Jr. also pleads with Sr. to sing The Itsy Bitsy Spider in order to make the thunder and rain stop. That's got to be intentional and if so, amazing. Hell, even as a coincidence that's amazing. I'm guessing they started with that issue and those images and worked backwards around there to build the story kind of like they said they did with the finale.
I just finished watching the Leftovers and I am amazed and deeply moved. Everything was extraordinary but I especially loved the soundtrack and the actor directing.
I feel like there's some intended parallel between David Burton pushing the (an anonymous?) stranger overboard from the Tasman ferry and Kevin pushing Patti into the well in his dream, but have no idea what to make of it beside a further hint at their duality.
The Leftovers really is profoundly well made. I think really people sense that when watching the show. I had a very intense reaction to it, which was what compelled me to try and make sense of it and to make these videos. Thanks for watching!
Gosh, how do you even know all these?? You are simply amazing. Tq for this. It just adds that additional layer to my experience of this astonishing series.
I also found the Leftover series most compelling. Most people I talked with about it could not suspend disbelief of the premise of a mysterious disappearance even for entertainment. They quit watching and I’m glad I stuck with it! The third season was particularly rewarding as we learn about key characters and their own ‘departure’ experience. Good to find thoughts and comments here to enrich and tweak my experience as I rewatch the series.
Wow. I’m impressed by your analyzes!! (And research) I just finished watching this amazing creation (The Leftovers) last night and for the first time in years I feel such a deep appreciation for all the people who made this show. I’ll remember it. You know. Again, Thanks for sharing your observations! //Eli
A few years ago I bought this copy of National Geographic, it was like $90 compared to every other edition around that time being available for $10. Happy I bought it and good to know that there are enough fans to make it worth something.
I just finished watching the Leftovers yesterday and I think there's another mention of Ciaro. In season 3, during Kevin Sr's episode when he's outside of the post office, he places something in a magazine and I'm pretty sure the page says Ciaro!
Thank you so much for these Leftovers videos. They really help to connect the dots for this criminally underappreciated masterpiece (hopefully soon to acclaim cult status). You are doing fantastic, best videos about the series! You will succeed in this field. Best of luck to you and can't wait for the third Garvey psychology video!
Kirby Yardley Trust me if Leftovers will earn cult following it deserves your vids will have way way more views. These are a must watch for Leftovers fans. Good luck! I hope you'll examine more tv or movies. You're good at it
there’s a reference on the news in season one to a man in Australia that died in an accident and came back or something ... it’s vague to me at the moment but i think it was the first reference we got to David Burton
WOW. Thanks for this video. It's amazing. I just finished watching this show and haven't feel I was watching a masterpiece since I watched Lost, 10 years ago. Thanks Damon Lindelof for creating this amazing series and to the rest people involved. I'll never forget this.
Omg! I am just now finding this series and your brilliant analysis. I went searching for conversation about this brilliant series and found you. It really helped me bring some of the pieces of the show together. So, sad that your reviews didn't continue!
goddamn brother.. you actually tracked that issue and looked it up. That's just insanely awesome of you, that magazine has been nagging me ever since season 1. Also, the fact that specific images from the said issue are recreated in those woods Kevin frequented in his fugue state, and the assumption that it is, in fact, a Macguffin, would imply that he actually accepted the role offered to him by his father in his dissociated state. That explains a lot of the things for me about his actions in his 'somnambulism'.
I apologise for making the above comment prematurely without watching the whole video. Clearly, A lot more research has gone into this than I realised then. Thank you for helping me better understand this show. There is one thing though, that has stuck with me since season 1. In episode 9, the second morning when Kevin is sitting by the road, smoking, a car stops by and one of the four ladies sitting inside asks him "Are you ready?", and then looks positively perplexed when he doesn't understand her. Then after communing with her fellow travellers, moves on saying "I thought you were someone else". Did we ever get a callback to that scene? It seemed like a foreshadowing of something big at the time but just seemed to vanish. Is there something about it the novel?
@@nishantrai8830 I might be incorrect, but believe that that scene was a foreshadow of a significant event happening (the Departure, and the GR being formed since they sensed the end of the world). Since Kevin was seen by the passengers, smoking a cigarette and wearing white, they probably thought he was a GR member, even though they hadn't been revealed publically as GR yet. I assume the people in the car were GR/pre-GR members as I think they were wearing white..
Interesting stuff. Feels like a good up and coming channel, please keep going (or don't if it's not your thing after all)! You've earned yourself a new subscriber, hope to see a lot more of you.

Thank you for the kind words! I had never seen The Last Wave, so I missed that connection entirely. Thanks for pointing it out. I definitely need to watch that film now.
Your videos are excellent. Can't wait for the following parts. Did you see Fearless also directed by Peter Weir. The Leftovers, especially for the path of Kevin Garvey, borrow some elements from this movie.

also in Laurie's season 2 episode, theres a scene where she's writing her book and on the TV is a news report about David Burton. not sure if this was in the vid and I missed it
Wow! Unexpected video! Very cool! I like the National Geographic references! There are soooo many easter eggs in the Leftovers just in the show beyond the references to mythology and things. Exactly why people didn’t like it much n it went underrated. Coz people these days want a straight forward fast paced storyline n Leftover is anything but any of that.
