Thanks for this one Mike, still rebuilding my 90 onto its new chassis. Getting there but having problems with indicators and wipers. Will get there in the end. Keep them coming Mike, really informative and enjoyable vids.
Thanks, mike👍 I’ll show this to my MOT man! Every year he advises about play in the steering when there’s nothing at all in the straight ahead position😂
Mine just failed MOT aim excessive movement in the steering. Trawled through your playlists and here it is. I’ll give this a try tomorrow. Good demo on the board as well. 👍🏻
This Malawi 110 leaks from the input seal - I was thinking of just buying a new box and sticking it on, but at £850 plus shipping - maybe not, so looks like another video in the near future!
I love how you class string as sophisticated equipment!! However I did notice it was red in colour, I hope it wasn't a Snap-on ball of string you are using or I may have to go back to watching Netflix!!
So when there's there's a lot of slack in the straight ahead position movement on the steering wheel and the nut with the alan key is turned in as far as it goes with out it being forced down there is still slack does that mean it's too worn on the worm screw and a new box is now the only option
Hi Mike. Great videos by the way my drop arm has just started to leak fluid is there excess pressure buils up when on full lock and is that the reason for the leak. It was fine and i'm doing some restoration work on it (Disco 1 V8 ) so have to keep moving it in and out of the workshop. The thing is it just started leaking today is this cause by pressure build up getting in and out of the workshop. TIA Andy.
Hello I am the owner of a Discovery 1 and a Jaguar MK10 with 420 power steering. I follow with very much interest your channel. But in the case of the Adwest power steering box play I could not fully agree. The steering worm is not from a constant diameter. The diameter varies. Minimum in the center and increasing to both sides, in such a way that the wheel in the steering arm maintains a constant distance with the worm gear. In adittion the gear ratio varies the steering id slower in the central position and faster in both sides. I wonder how the designers in the sixties could desing such a piece without any kind of CAD
I'd imagine that there would be more engagement points from the worm gear to shaft instead of just one, like a daisy with slotted petals? Are any other steering boxes retrofitable?
hello I’ve got a quick question for you there’s movement in my steering wheel even though I’m not turning the corner is driving straight excessive movement would you say the steering box is no good excessive movement even when it’s parked up not running does the box need adjusting I’ve tried to adjust the box but it seems like it’s binding any help would be much appreciated thanks
You didn't mention what vehicle it is, but I would not recommend you adjusting the steering box without experience as you can make the problem worse - try to find a local independent shop to have a look - will not cost much, but better than the box locking up on the road!
Having problem with my steering get a cluck when turning right and goes turns it own way sometimes and gets wobbles is it my steering box have legit check over everything 10 times
So all the steering components are in good order and you still have problems? You could have the steering box overhauled, but I would have a competent mechanic check the steering, axle bushes, swivel balls etc. first. Sounds like a poorly maintained vehicle
@@BritannicaRestorations yeah getting a steering box today and if that don’t work ima send it off a cliff lol replaced 2 tie rods yesterday wasn’t the problem
get one from a nissan patrol, or toyota 80 series.. nissan are stronger.. i have a l/rover box on my 75 ford f250 highboy.. couldnt find anything else at time. also have a box off a 280.?/.. mercedes.. you need to cut, weld drill..or go to a garage..
There are many who have come from regular rack and pinion steering systems to Land Rovers and are unaware that the boxes have this feature where rack and pinion does not have this issue
@@BritannicaRestorations Sorry Mike, my comment wasn't clear, it was a compliment to your simplicity in explaining. Even I understood and I have always sat at the back of the class.
I have a blog and it includes this page on rebuilding a Series steering box. The worm gear, main nut and rocker shaft arrangement are very similar to the Adwest box and it has the same play at each side, and is also susceptible to damage if adjusted offset. The photos of the internal parts may help your explanation. I think the play is specifically the main nut travelling along the slot of the rocker shaft fork at full lock, not the length of the nut from the rocker shaft axis (that length increase ought to decrease radial play if other factors weren’t present): www.nickslandrover.co.uk/steering-box/
The design of the series box is better in the fact that the recirculating ball cage has a locating pin which moves on the selector shaft /output slot, where as the Adwest is rather like an old worm and wheel gearbox - only due to the constraints of design, there are only one tooth on the selector 'wheel', so in extreme left and right positions the tooth contact is reduced, hence play, but the series should have no play in the same situation as the pin is allowed to move in the slot
Something else I just learned after all these years, cheers Mike.

I agree with discopete. The worm diameter increases in both side in such a way that the contact is maintained in all the angles
Thanks, mike👍

They should know this with a steering box - a rack and pinion is different
Excellent video ! Thanks very much
You are welcome!
Thanks!
No problem!
Esoteric mechanical insights and marvels...
The worm gear doesn't have parallel sides, they are concave to allow for the contact with the wheel

Eye watering! I’ll look forward to the next instalment👍🏻
Another question answered. Thanks Mike.
Quicker to do a small video than write an explanation!
Brilliant!

No it was regular string!
Great explanation. Can you do a full video on the steering death wobble and possible ways to sort it out.
I never had this with Defenders but a lot with Disco 1's - fortunately there are hardly any D1's here
Once again brilliant explication.

Could be - it would need stripping and maybe adjusting from scratch - the main selector shaft needs removing to set the worm - could be a bad bearing
Abosolute gold these vids. Very informative 👍
Glad you like them!
Hi Mike. When you adjust the nut, is it necessary to have the front wheels of the ground, jacked up?
Best with wheels up as you take the weight off the steering

You should not hold the steering on full lock for more than a few seconds, but it seems the lower seal is in need of a replacement anyway

Built in leak!

There are 3 teeth on the main shaft wheel
They are a strong box, but older ones are prone to leaks
@@BritannicaRestorations sounds a bit like an ex of mine...
Sorry I was getting confuse with a Gemmer box - the Adwest only has one tooth on the wheel/selector

yes, I have a Burman steering box that leaks.

Yes you should be able to adjust it out
