  • Ever wondered how to get a scaled pattern from a book to fit you - or your client? This video shows you how to ‘grade’ a pattern to fit you. It is a method that I like to call ‘Exploding’ this is because you literally cut the pattern into small segments, and then move every section away from each other to make the overall pattern your size.
Things to consider are that to make a pattern bigger it is not just about making it fit around the body, but also lengthways, and not just making the inside leg longer, but the body rise too.
This video is a bit long and waffly (apologies!) but I think it demonstrates what you need to think about when making a pattern bigger.
I will upload a video on how to transfer the patterns from the book to full size, so like this video and subscribe to my channel ‪@SewMrsBee‬ to be the first to know when its ready to watch
Happy Pattern Drafting (and Exploding!) Everyone!

I was wondering if this would work in the opposite way also making a smaller size?

Hi! Thank you for your kind words!
Yes I think it would work in the same way to make a pattern smaller. You would need to reshape the areas where you have cut the pattern but I think it would work. As with making a pattern bigger doesn’t always mean it needs to be longer (although it did in my demo) don’t assume that making a pattern smaller (in width) means it will also be shorter. Does that make sense?!!
Glad you are enjoying the videos - happy sewing 😊
